Fuel cost are breaking the very back of our economy. I’m assuming your fuel on the west coast is expenses as Midwest. We are current over $5. Per gallon for off road fuel highway fuel is at $6. Per gallon. I’m have customer telling me they can’t afford the price of my hay. My current situation is not to bale any hay that not ordered. I know trucking is a very different type of service however be careful that you don’t have customers who don’t or can’t pay for your service. Best of luck to you guys.

Been contemplating getting a tri axle for my excavation business. Everyone I talked to says it's 10k a yr before even turning a key or before payments on the truck. Insurance, registration, over weight permits etc. Could you specify and go a little more into depth. Some of it like the registration is state. But the over weight and Insurance doesn't vary state to state from what I understand

Costs seem pretty "normal" for these days. Fuel ugh! But it is what it is. Hiring a bookkeeper is a smart move, they can usually spot irregularities and trends that might pop up when you would overlook them. Hiring a bookkeeper is something that more people should do and don't many times usually to their dismay. Out of curiosity, do you get any insurance break if you use a dash cam? I have heard of that but the people I drove for never said anything about an insurance break.
What I really want to know is how did you flip the photo at 4:10 and turn your T800 into right hand drive. Just checking to see if we are paying attention?

This is a great video, explaining everything about your expenses and breaking them down . Everything thing that you do, is costing more and more and the government is right in there wanting a big part also and they don't care . You are very lucky that you have Bobby and can do your own repairs .
It's great that your truck is a 2003 model and doesn't require DEF either .
Things are so different now, compared to back years ago when my dad had trucks. My dad was a person that was always big on maintenance on the trucks . He always had new extra ( normal wear out or breakable parts ), stocked ahead . Oil, oil filters, fuel filters, antifreeze, gear lube , grease, light bulbs, extra belts, wheel seals several new sets of brakes, a couple of new extra sets of springs, extra lug nuts, extra new tires and tubes and several extra rims . So if he had a breakdown, he didn't have to wait to get stuff or parts, most of the time he already had it in the garage at home . He even had his own underground fuel tank put in with a regular fuel station pump on it and once in a while would sell fuel to other people
He even got so, that he would have a complete set of winter time tires on rims and a complete set of summer time tires on rims and then swap them out back and forth over the next couple of years or so . So that he always had good tires for the weather. And then as the tires wore, he would buy one new set ahead .
Being able to have and set your own hourly rate is your greatest thing . And once you get to the point that you can work with your insurance rate, is really going to help you also .
Thanks for the video and take care and stay safe and keep on trucking .
    As always, Jeffrey !!!
    🤗👍💖💫

That payment for drug testing to another company sounds like a scam to me. I do building maintenance and some big companies won’t hire me unless I pay an annual fee to a company that checks to make sure I comply with safe work practices and have the required insurance in place like $20 million public liability. Needless to say I’m not paying and told them to take a hike. What is the annual registration cost for your truck? Watching from Perth Western Australia.😀👍🇦🇺

Hi. Here in Norway is different situation. One galon of diesel converted from litres ans uero to your language is 8.89 US dollars per galon. On the top of this price we pay expensive toll on road. Most of roads, vridges abd tunnels are private. Average price is around 50% of price of fuel per trip plus ferries. Of course we pay insurance, road tax, every 2 months truck inspection and all other bids like you.
Price of fuel is about 25% of transport price. We use very top spec trucks here modified for extreme winters, so heated windscreen, side windows, wiper blades, floors in cab, rubber seal in foors etc. During winter we must use winter diesel even more expensive. I drove in Canada, it was different. We drive here on narrow roads, small traffic here and no motorways not necessary. My truck without trailer cost over 250k Uero 267k USD
It is hard we love it as well as us drivers

When I first started my business I went through all of the start-up decisions that you have. My business lasted 17 years and the secret is listening to others in your business and use the things that you think will work for you and ignore the others. One of the best pieces of advice I got was from my accountant. I agree with your bookkeeper decision. Your most valuable time has to be spent driving the truck not keeping books. Mine advised me to always take a paycheck. Whether I cash the paycheck or stick it in a drawer is up to me as an employee of my business. I would suggest you write your husband a check for his work. It's a legitimate expense of your business and will probably help when it comes income tax time. If you/he chooses to put it in a drawer it becomes a savings account for when your business grows. True, it's income you will have to pay taxes on but not until you cash the check unless things in Washington State are different than Kansas. Is you bookkeeper an accountant that can advise you? It's worth the fee to ask.

There's no bigger scam artists than insurance companies and I agree you're definitely paying more than you should. I also am going through Progressive and I have full coverage on my 379 Peterbilt, and full coverage on a brand new $80,000 side dump and $30,000 belly dump trailers with $5,000,000 liability coverage and I pay $380 per month for all of that setup. My other trucks and trailers are cheaper because I only have liability on them. They like to get you in on a cheap rate then down the road will increase your premiums drastically so what I do is just switch back and forth from Progressive to Hub International which is every year or so to keep my premiums low. Ya going to shop's for repairs can definitely put a small business out of business.

Progressive screwed me over royally when I was younger. I used them when I bought a car and they couldn't never get my information correct. Despite numerous phone calls to them to correct the issue they never got it right. A week before my wedding I was involved in an accident and found out then that Progressive had cancelled my policy for "no payment" because they couldn't get my address right to send the bill - though they had it right to send me my proof of insurance and some bills got to me. But for some reason they kept losing my address or something. I ended up filing a formal complaint with the WA State Attorney General over it. I've dealt with them on a professional level when I used to own my Private Investigation firm and they were awful to deal with if I was doing an accident investigation for a client. Horrible, horrible company. My advice for insurance is to use an insurance broker They will get you the best deal. I had to do that when I had my P.I. firm.

Thanks for the review of the operating expenses for the Trucking Business! The insurance is quite high as well as the fuel costs. So it is smart to have the bookkeeper and husband to make the repairs. God Bless you and your family! Keep on Trucking!

When I tell people how much I spend just to stay in business they then get an idea of why it is so expensive to hire someone in my line of work to complete a job. The excavation business is expensive to operate.

What’s your fuel bill with tax rebate, the loads u draw don’t seem all that heavy, or the box all that full, Maybe 60 -70 percent full, 102,000 lbs, 46 ton in every load eats tyres,

Tax rebate? I’m guessing that’s an OTR thing. I don’t cross state lines. They are legal loads, it’s load by weight, not volume. I’m good for 105,500.

Actually, I think $1200+ for insurance isn't all that bad, especially with only one truck/trailer combo. Don't know anything about Progressive, though. I think its a good idea to have a professional bookkeeper. They stay on top of all requirements and changes as they happen, so nothing should fall between the cracks. As far as your husband doing your mechanic work, I would come up with a payment plan, because it should be deductible, plus would help his business. Best of luck, keep on trucking, keep the shiny side up and the dirty side down, catch you on the bounce around. Dryrot said that. I'm gone
