In this week’s episode, we discuss something I've got to address with you. Mean comments or comments that aren't constructive are something that comes with the territory of running a UA-cam channel. And, in this video I want to address some of the biggest complaints I received in 2023 in order to start the new year off with a clean slate. I hope you enjoy this week's video and as always thanks so much for watching! - Mark D.

The issue about people watching videos on UA-cam is that they care more about production and not so much about the content. For me you would be on your living room filming on your smartphone and with only natural light and it would be fine by me. It’s all about the content and that never fails to deliver. Thank you for your effort and sharing and enthusiasm on doing so. Cheers and have a great new year.

Thomas Heaton and several other photographers have talked about that 1% that feel compelled to leave these negative comments and how much they let that small percentage of morons bother them to the point where they felt the need to create a video just like this. I've done landscape and wildlife photography since the 80's and I thoroughly enjoy all of your videos! You've got the right mindset. Do what you enjoy and not what others think you should be doing. Keep up the great work! Whether you produce 5 videos or 200 videos in 2024, I will look forward to every one of them. I think I speak on behalf of most photographers when I say that we are our own worst critics. Whether you realize if or not, you ARE as good if not better than some of those guys you mentioned in your video. Don't let these trolls get to you. Just do you brother!

Mark, haters are just gonna hate. Petty jealousy will always worm its way into something successful, and at 269,000+ subscribers I would call your UA-cam channel very successful. You've got nothing to apologize for or defend; your videos are instructional, beneficial, and enjoyable just the way they are and I can't imagine ANYONE wanting to chastise you short of just being petty. Your photography is incredible and speaks for itself, as does your UA-cam channel. Let the haters keep hating, but we - your fans and followers - appreciate your gift and talent and we appreciate you sharing your time and expertise with us. Keep going forward; we're all with you!

Mark, I've been an amateur photographer for over 50 years, and I since I found your channel a couple years ago I think I've watched pretty much every video you've posted. Why? Because no matter what topic you discuss any given week, I always learn something new from you or gain a new perspective about something. Your "folksy" style is very enjoyable, much like sitting across a table from you and having a good chat and a beer would be. Pay no mind to the critics! They are not worth listening to, and you have a huge audience of people who thoroughly enjoy your videos, your style, and your personality, and who appreciate the ongoing effort you make to pass along your knowledge and experience to us. As you said, you operate the channel because you enjoy doing it. And you are good at it! Keep up the great work in 2024, and Happy New Year.

It always amazes me how self-entitled, and just generally miserable, some people can be, to criticise and run-down free content that they can simply click away from if they don't enjoy it...what sad sacks they are! 😄
Not that I've had a lot of it myself (it grows with the channel, I think), but when I have, it has often inspired me to make a video about my views on some aspect of photography that their whine focussed on. So I turn it into a source of creation, and something positive for myself, and hopefully my viewers.
As for the "you're not a photographer" comments, that doesn't even make sense. Nonsensical people deserve to be ignored and forgotten about.
Well done for creating the life *you* want (you know, given you're the one living it), and helping a lot of people along the way!

Working up to a point....Hi Mark, I have been a photographer since I was12. However, I have also had 43 years as a secondary school teacher - mostly psychology. Even now, in retirement, I still teach Psych 101 at my local community college here in Farmington, CT. In my life, I can now look back and say that the most important character trait in a person's personality, as well as his or her interactions with fellow human beings is....sincerity. Getting to the point, you and Chris Lee (Pal2Tech) are two of the most sincere guys on the internet. The two of you are indeed, my "Fuji peeps." A greater compliment....I cannot think of. Most UA-cam photogs online are "okay," and there are a fair number who just like to hear (and watch) themselves talk. But you and Chris are not full of yourselves - and this is not to mention the knowledge the two of you bring forth. Statement repeated, the two of you are as sincere as it gets - and I thank the two of you (big-time) for being yourselves. And as far as the complainants are concerned, I sincerely believe that these folks, in their pettiness, have far too much time on their hands. Perhaps these folks need to buy a dog and take it for long walks. Toward that point, I've done the math. You have 269,000 subscribers. So when 3% (my own estimation) see fit to bellyache or whine, or moan, or groan, or whatever the word is....that means there's a mathematical potential for over 8000 whiners to be "called to action." That's a lot of (numerical) potential to wreck your day, your week, or month. And so I congratulate you on keeping on....keeping on. As for me, I could not do it as I am hurt very easily. In fact, I have completely given up doing weddings. There are far too many bride-zillas out there. Most brides, both good and bad, are filled with anxiety. And worse, they project that anxiety onto everyone around them, e.g., their families, their vendors, etc. I mean....I could photograph 51 weddings and the newly married couple are as pleased as they can be. But there's that one couple who are dissatisfied with my all-out efforts......and I am devastated by it. It takes me months and months to get over it. That is, if I ever do.
So Mark, keep on...keeping on. You are Chris Lee are the best.
    Sincerely,
    Terrence Marselle
    Bristol, Connecticut

Mark, you are by far the best teacher on UA-cam. Your videos are informative and entertaining at the same time. I've sometimes wondered why you don't do more on location work but in the end it's your weekly tutorial videos that are the best. When you mentioned the only good photo you've gotten while filming on location I immediately thought of that very image. Don't listen to those people that always denigrate your work. They are usually miserable people who only derive any pleasure by trying to make someone else miserable. I've been following you for several years now and you always deliver quality content. As a retired biologist with a dream of telling landscape conservation stories through repeat photography, I need to tell you how grateful I am that you have chosen to share your incredible skills and knowledge with the rest of us. I've just scratched the surface in terms of understanding more about photography, but I'm learning so much from you. Your photos are stunning and your videos are so informative and easy to understand. I guess I have to wonder what the photos and videos of your (very few) critics look like! Anyhow, thank you for all you are doing and I hope to be following your channel for years to come as I navigate this retirement dream!

Hi Mark, thanks for what I believe was an unnecessary video. Photography is clearly your passion and your desire to help others overcome similar obstacles in their journey speaks to who you are as both a talented photographer and person. Those who choose to criticize you for how you do what you do just don't have enough to do in their lives. Please place them in the "ignore" file, mark their messages as spam and move on. You're incredibly talented as a photographer and teacher. Please don't change anything based on the feedback of those who contribute no value towards what you're doing. Thank you for what you do and how you do it. Here's wishing you a Happy New Year and a successful, prosperous and safe 2024!

Mark, whatever you are doing it works for the vast majority of your subscribers, and it obviously works for you. I appreciate your channel and look forward to each episode. I started 2023 in the hospital, and was in such severe pain that I could not perform the most basic functions of living. After surgery in January, I was back to being able to do most things I love to do including getting out with my camera and tripod almost every day. So I appreciate every day I can photograph or even watch engaging videos that help me to improve my photography. Keep up the great work and do what you love to do, not what someone else thinks you should do.

Envy none Mark! You do a very fine job and your smoothness (that you talked about Heaton, Danson et.al. may have more than you) is simply your naturalness and honesty. I'd say you're a photographer, with enough videography skills to get your content out there. Being a photographer does not depend on making a living from it. If you can, then that is marvelous. Keep going Mark, 🙏 Bravo!

I came to your channel because of your calm, honest way of teaching things about landscape photography that I am always open to learning new small things even if I've been doing it for many years. I totally agree that filming yourself on location makes it so much harder to concentrate on photography. I tried it maybe once or twice and never again. Some people are good at it and people can always watch those videos. Still I really enjoy your videos because they are different and I see you being genuine that not many are these days. The super small percentage of negative people are absolutely irrelevant and should be ignored. Keep doing what you enjoy Mark and thank you for sharing so much great teachings that I keep still learning about. It doesn't matter if it's one video a month or one video a week. 😀👍

Mark, your videos encourage me on several levels. First, you've helped my photography abilities considerably. Second, I've done some video production myself on a different subject and I have always appreciated the simplicity of your setup that focuses on content instead of video editing skills. Your editing is fine, but you could make far more use of special effects, etc., but that would be at the expense of genuine content. Keep doing what you're doing. Laugh at those who are naysayers, and know that while most of us don't comment regularly, we really appreciate your work. Happy New Year. May God bless you and your family.

Mark, I know you have gotten a lot of praise in the comments, well deserved praise. I just want to add that I like your style of video. I also appreciate the honesty you have shown in this one. It’s good to know that it’s hard for you to take a video and a photo that you are truly proud of. Hi Mark. It’s an unfortunate truth in our society that it’s so much easier to criticize and find fault than to praise and compliment. Please, please, please don’t pay any attention to those negative comments. I am the past version of yourself that you mentioned. I’ve learned most of what I know about technique, Lightroom, etc. from watching your videos. They’ve given me just enough confidence to take chances and stretch and grow in photography. Please don’t change anything you do. And please accept my thanks.

I really love your videos and photos! What I care about is learning how to find a good composition (my biggest problem), seeing how to edit photos and use the tools. I have learned a ton from watching your videos and hopefully one of these years I'll be able to afford one of your workshops.

I go through the same sometimes with my channel. There are people out there who refuse to feel their own insecurities and instead project them onto others due to their inability to recognize that the problem is not the person it's directed at but themselves.
I love the belief that nobody is allowed to tell you what you are or who you are based on their own expectations of what a person should be. Unfortunately we have too many people out there who grow up physically but not mentally, but I've realized at the end of the day that if you have the problem, YOU have the problem not the individual you have the problem with.
Not that it matters, but I definitely say keep doing what you're doing. There are always going to be people who are judgmental about the way you go about things but at the end of the day the funny thing is those are the people that most of the times haven't done it themselves if you catch my drift.
I personally enjoy the non excessive and straight to the point info.

Your number one critic is yourself. It looks like you're happy for the most part with that critic, and that's what's important. Smooth and relaxed and informative videos is what we watch your channel for. Don't change a thing, unless that critic inside you suggests it. That's a great philosophy to "teach a former version of yourself". Love it Mark. Wishing you and your family all the best for 2024!
