- For those who still listen to FM radio like I do, you may of been interested in HD Radio at one point or another. In this video I take a look at the highly regarded Sony XDR0F1HD tuner and test how well it performs on HD broadcasts. as well as compare it against a standard FM tuner for analog broadcasts.

I have that same Technics tuner, 14:33 you don't need that adapter for it, just connect a stripped coaxial cable directly to the bolts, (the shield to the ground bolt and canter conductor to the other bolt.)
I still use an FM Radio to this Day my Flip Phone (Which I got from T-Mobile October 27th 2020 for $128) has an FM Radio and I use it all the time I think that's very Cool that my Cell Phone has that since that's very neat
FYI, there is often signal loss when using a converter balun. But it is true the Sony has a more sensitive tuner. Another good HD radio is the portable Insignia NS HD01, from Best Buy.
Great vid! I think there is someone who mods the XDR-F1HD in which he replaces some internal parts of tuner to make it sound good and to greatly lessen overheating problems. Might purchase this one soon as it is a great tuner for me.
Good testing modality. The comparison is remarkable. That Sony tuner is one of real best ever made. There are a few problems with it. It gets too hot, it doesn’t hold stations in memory. The tuner doesn’t have enough memories. No the tuners are not expensive, there just aren’t enough of them. That Sony tuner only costs $96.00 when it was new. I have $400.00 tuners from the 1970’s that aren’t HD.
Best project would be to use a car headunit that has HD radio and make a home box for it with a computer power supply. I find the quality can be very nice.
This is what I have done. I have a set top box 12V dc power supply, audio out from the RCAs on the back, and a home made F Jack to Motorola adapter. Works good, adds Bluetooth to my setup too.
@@XMguy how did you wire the power supply? Do you have it all in a special box?
@@CrashCarson14 You can easily use a 12v plug from just about any old modem, wifi router, or something like that. just make sure its 12 volts. cut the wires and hook it up.
@@vwbeaner yeah that makes sense. From looking at my headunit, mine says it can draw up to 10 Amps! I cannot find a wall wart that will give that much power. Computer power supplies only seem to do this. I don’t want to underpower. I’ve thought about like a laptop charger and somehow getting it to run over usb C but those don’t seem to give more than 3amps, they tend to use 20v in order to give more watts.
best man :)
Best receiver for analog FM DX (!) reception ever build. Still, and that since 2008
Probably the best radio for FM DX, especially with computer mod.
Napewno kenwood kdc bt 73 dab jest lepszy czułość i selektywność
Good and informative video.
Wow! I'd say a stark difference! I just fixed my Sony XDR-F1HD BTW - one of the RCA jacks wasn't putting out audio ...
Very nice. Please could someone share a good schematic of a tuned FM amplifier? Thank you.
13:56 Let's compare this super Sony HD tuner with just a few little problems like - It gets too hot, it doesn’t hold stations in memory and the tuner doesn’t have enough memories.
to this Technics tuner that doesn't work at all.
Yep - loads better
You convinced me with that thorough A / B comparison, i will get on ebay and buy one tomorrow.
NOT.
another thing, i detest HiFi equipment with any controls anywhere else other than on the front panel.
The Technics tuner does work, it's just not as sensitive. The overheat problem of the Sony tuner can also do permanent damage overtime if you use it alot.
@@BrettDarien we have different definitions of the word " working "
that Technics tuner is NOT working.
and
I will not be buying the Sony XDR-F1HD either ever
I have the Sony ST 5950
the Sony ST J75
the Sony ST 5130
and the Sony ST 500O fw
SOME OF THE FINEST TUNERS EVER MADE
unmodified, unrestored, and still sounding superb.
Fair enough. The reason I got this tuner though was to try the HD Radio. I may eventually sell it and get a better analog tuner.
@@elvisburgerking8675 I thought you died on the toilet
FYI: Yes, the "adjacent zip code" advice is legit. It's not uncommon for radio waves to travel at least a little bit farther than the "official" service areas of their stations.
how much less will it cover sir
For sale?
If the radio is off, do I still need to worry about it overheating?
From my observations, the radio only gets hot when it's powered on.
@@BrettDarien So I don't always have to unplug it, which is good to know.
In theory, yes, but I still unplug it anyway just to be sure
What’s the alternative for HD in 2023? I wish the FCC would mandate DRM - Digital Radio Mondiale
The only potential alternative to HD Radio I'm aware of is ATSC 3 Radio, but it's just a concept and I'm doubtful it'll be successful if implemented.
ATSC 3 is the UHD television broadcast standard for UHD(4K) TV over the air.
What is the price of this radio and by the way my name is Gabe Elliott
The S3HD table top version is better as it has a rotary tuning knob - better for DXing & bandscanning
I need the remote for this unit, anybody ?
HD Radio sounds terrible regardless of the radio. Compressed tinny sound. Satellite Radio and HD Radio is not for music.
