My respect! A amazing and very structured daily routine! This proves that hiking is not just aimless running around, but rather a very carefully planned undertaking.😊
I enjoyed watching thank you. The bond you and Otto have is beautiful. It made me smile when you and he shared the crisps. What adventures you have together!
Super-nice video Elli, so nice to be hiking with your 4-legged bestie ! I have a Ridgeback and Vizsla and we love hiking, but only day-trips so far. I love that you make your hike based upon what Otto can/will do, Grüße from Florida 🙂
Great video Elli and 12/10 for your organisational skills. I never feel like eating all that much when I’m out there and the putting up of the tent each day! I really admire your tenacity. I must have a slightly pathetic look on my face when putting up my tent, because most times people want to help 😂. You’ll remember that from Padstow 😂 But there again, I am in my 60s 😂. You have so much energy. I was tired out just going through your daily routine. Lol I just love seeing the relationship between you and Otto. You are such a kind soul. Keep up the great work, you’re a natural at these videos. X
I feel like I have to be when I'm hiking with Otto just to make sure he's comfortable :) Thank you so much for your support and encouragement! PS: Putting up the tent isn't the "problem" for me, because I know that I can rest afterwards... Taking it down in the morning is my least favorite thing :/ Hahaha
Feedback for you. Firstly, I really enjoy your vlogs. But I thought that I would say how much your enthusiasm and approach has actually impacted on me, and my own approach to my various hobbies and keep fit regimes. I imagine that others are similarly influenced. And the way you care for Otto is so 'caring'. Sheffield South Yorkshire.
Love it! Your thru-hiker routine with a dog is like mine except we do a bear bag hang and cannot eat at our tent. I hike and live in the Northeastern USA. I live in Pocono mountain and Appalachian Mountains. I hike a lot in PA, NJ, Adirondacks NY and NH Whites. I love the comfort of the companionship with the dog. My day on trail dictates how the dog feels. Just loving your channel and Otto! Trail on🥾🐕
I am really enjoying your videos, as an older walker I have had to adapt my walking distances but I still love the long trails. I had a lot of trouble with my feet last year when I was walking the Pennine Way at the same time as you. It was so hot that my skin just turned into a mass of blisters and I had to give up. It took over a month for me to be able to wear shoes and so now I have a very strict foot regime (at home and when walking). I use pumice on my feet every night to keep the rough skin smooth, I keep my nails short and put coconut butter on my feet every night. I also take my boots and socks off after every 5 miles and replace them with a new pair of socks and I use a different lacing arrangement to keep the toe box looser. So far I have had no blisters.
That was brilliant! I'm so glad you posted this video. Now all I have to do is train my partner to be as 'good as gold' as Otto is. HaHa! The pair of you have such a marvelous partnership. I'm envious, inspired and in awe of you both. Both of you have my greatest respect.
Thank you for taking the time to share your walk with us. I know a lady who walked the Pennine Way with her well behaved dog, it was also the Maid of Honour at her wedding😂. I think that having others, such as Otto to think about helps with the mental strength you must have to walk such distances day after day. By the way, you mentioned your watch/fitness band at about 3:15, what make is it, and are you really happy with it? Again, thank you
Thank you so much for following along, that means a lot :) I'm using a gps watch, the Garmin Solar Instinct 2S. It records mileage etc., but also has a compass, weather data and can be used for navigation if the gpx track has been downloaded to the watch :)
I love this so much. It was so mich joy to watch you guys. I used to hike a lot alone or sometimes with friends but 2 years ago a little shelter doggo joined me, called Eli. :) It's quite a different experience and watching you with Otto was so heartwarming!
Hi Elli and Otto. Brilliant video, wished I was that organised. Me, I just head down and batter myself senseless. Every hike I say I won't and every hike I do🙄. Guess I need a little doggy to calm me down. Love otto by the way, especially those shots where he's trotting off. Brilliant, doggy doing what doggies love👌Anyhoo, guess youve finished the JoGLE so well done the both of you. Absolutely fantastic achievement and I've absolutely loved and looked forward to every episode, particularly when I understand and appreciate all the background effort you've put in to taking us along with you. You've my utmost respect and I'm looking forward to watching the conclusion of the walk, and watching the lot again. Well done, big thumbs up from me and wishing you and otto all the very best for the future. Dave aka wackyswanderings
Thank you so much for the kind words, Dave! That really means a lot :) I feel like I have to be more organised when hiking with Otto just because I want to make sure that he's comfortable.... Stay tuned, the last stretch on the SWCP was so beautiful 😊😊
Thank you so much, really appreciate it :) Hahaha, I know it looks like that when it's all put together and when everything goes to plan... But it definitely is not always easy and I'm sometimes frustrated too of course :)
🦴It's good to be Otto🦴 I really loved this one but that's not to say I didn't love all of them. But this one answers some questions I had. Loved the shots of Otto sleeping (He looked so cute) OK Elli It's time. There's something I wanted to ask you for the longest time. As funny as it looks, What's with the Tongue coming out all the time 😜 is it just a habit ? Take care, and looking forward as always to the next video. 😜✌
Thank you so much! Yes, I really think Otto loves our life on the trail, always getting treats and exploring new areas all day :) Hahaha, I don't know - just a habit I guess. Probably because it's weird sometimes to just look into the camera without doing "anything", so I guess that's how the habit started ;)
Nice video!! I have yet to backpack but will end up taking my dog with me. Some dogs should have an hour of rest after eating to prevent bloat. Doesn’t seem to be an issue with your dog but others should be aware. You could use reusable bags for his meals to reduce the amount waste produced.
Thank you so much! Yes, true about the rest for some dogs - good point! I actually reuse the bags. I keep them in my pack and use them to repackage food for Otto or use them as trash bags, poop bags etc….
Sehr cooles Video!!! Otto ist sooo brav und süß! Danke dass du deinen Tagesablauf teilst, bestimmt denke ich bei meinem nächsten Abenteuer öfter daran wenn ich zu spät aufstehe 😬
Great video Elli and Otto, great to see you planning for the day and everything but also how your plans involve the well Fair of Otto which is so important. He really is an amazing little dog and well trained. I bet you made a few kms on going back to get camera 😂. Hope your fingers better. Take care both 🌷
Thank you so much, Chris! Yes, Otto adapts really well to life on trail... he doesn't know a lot of tricks or something like that but he's very good at understanding what I need him to do while out hiking (i.e. not running up to people, not straying off the path etc.) without following any specific commands. I think we're just well coordinated with each other...
Hi Ellie! Great video. My wife and I have three dogs, one of which can only hike short distances due to age and arthritis. We feed our dogs a raw diet, but cant do that in the warmer months bc it would spoil. So when doing multi-day hikes with our Boston Terriers, I buy freeze dried dog food from a local company, which is lighter than kibble, and only requires water to reconstitute, which they dont seem to mind. Love your routine! What do you do if a cafe or store does not allow dogs? And what resource do you use if you are not tent camping to find a hostel or hotel that allows them?
Thank you so much for the feedback! I looked into freeze-dried food too, but I'm always apprehensive to change things too much because Otto is food-sensitive (malnutrition issues when he lived in the shelter as a puppy). Luckily I've only come across a few cafes that didn't allow dogs. In that case, I either sit outside (if it's not raining) or just get something to take away. As for stores: I try to use stores in lesser frequented areas, where not too many people are around and tie him up outside. And then I do my food shopping as quickly as possible. For accomodation I use booking or airbnb, on both sites it's possible to filter for options that allow dogs. I've never stayed in a hostel with Otto, I feel like dogs are most likely not allowed there.
Fuelled by chips! 🍟💪 (but did you have any proper greasy ones?) Interesting to see, thanks Elli - your vids are insightful and about the best out there 🙌🙏
Definitely fuelled by chips and coffee :) Yes, I got the really greasy ones a few times too!! Thank you so much for your feedback and support! That means so much :)
Hi Nice informative video and cute dog ❤ I would like to do some longer hikes with my dogs as well, but can't figure out a couple of things. How do you solve it when you enter places where he is not allowed in, like a grocery shop? And how do you restock his food?
Thank you so much, really happy that you’ve found the video helpful :) When I go into a grocery store or pharmacy etc., I just tie him up outside and tell him to wait. He’s used to that and just sits there without any distress. I try to chose a supermarket etc. that’s not too busy though and do my shopping as quickly as possible. If there’s staff (like security etc.) near the door or people waiting outside I ask them to have an eye on him. As for his food: I either send myself a resupply parcel to campsites etc. with his food before setting off for the trail or I buy food in bigger towns (at pet stores) or order it from Amazon to a pickup location. If I do that, I can’t carry everything (because it’s usually 5kg of dog food) and I send the rest ahead to the next campsite etc to pick it up a few days later there and restock from there….
My base weight is 8.8kg (including Otto's stuff and my electronics to film and edit), but without food and water. I made a gear video in April with everything I took and linked my gear list there too, if you want to have a look and scroll back to my first videos :)
He's not interested in cows at all (and often times scared of them), but he loves anything that moves quickly like sheep running away. He knows that he's not allowed to chase them, but I think he's tempted sometimes which is why I keep him on the lead around livestock :)
I love how you take care of your dog.
