I enjoyed reading The Sympathizer and happy to see this interview with VTN. I am curious about the brief discussion regarding Apocalypse Now. If I understand Coppola's intentions with the film, correctly, it isn't really about the Vietnam War but a reinterpretation of Joseph Conrad's "Heart of Darkness" using the Vietnam Was as a relatable setting. HOD is a critique about the nature of unchecked power and how easily it corrupts.
Seeing the coffins of American servicemen returning from Vietnam while serving overseas was reality. Never forget the Americans who died there. I know a family of 8 who had to immigrate to the Philippines to escape Vietnam and finally made it to the U.S. All of their children worked hard in schools. The ones with the lowest educational accomplishments are the ones with "only" a Master's Degree in their chosen field!
