According to me, PhDs are good for those who are passionate about their subjects, who have no responsibilities ( send money for parents back home, no cultural pressure to marry at a certain age, no financial pressure) on their shoulders. A degree exists to serve a purpose so it is.

Bro, a PhD doesn't just open up career opportunities in academia but also in the industry. For example let me talk about the semiconductor industry. The top end research that happen with semiconductor materials and devices in MNCs such as TSMC, Intel or Samsung make it mandatory to have a PhD degree to join their R&D teams. A masters degree won't take us that far because our core competency required to excel and match the rigor of the job can only be acquired through the PhD process because we master a subset of skills that is highly sought after by the industry.

You didnt even touch upon the hardest part of PhD which is publishing papers and going through a long peer review porocess. If you really dont have passion and motivation it will test your ability like anything during a PhD. This is what makes i PhD so hard. if you dont have passion you will give up at somepoint. This is again the fundamental reason why you should do PhD. Everything else including the engineering analysis will say dont do you a PhD.

From my point of view, as the research in llm and ai models are growing, there would be no need of coders or programmers . Because every company is in race to go at par with openai. We dont need any more software engineers, because chatgpt can do it in leesser period of time. Just wait for next 10 years, the person with phd will only be employed, because he will have access to lab.

Why do you care about what is growing? Care about what is interesting to you

PhD students do a lot internships at top places like Meta, Google Brain and Microsoft research every summer and earn just as much as anyone in the industry. They don't have the burden of a frickin loan on their heads. I mean just look at the number of masters students without a job in 2024 just working as some goddamn volunteer to prolong their OPT.
PhDs by the time they graduate would have spent 2-3 summers at top research facilities and 99% of the time have a return offer.

Randomly stumbled across this video. Well, as someone with a PhD in Machine Learning, I do not agree with many things that are said in this video. "PhD doesn't add anything more than a masters" - I'm sorry, not true. In simple words, If you are seeing money/house as the ONLY barometer Don't do a PhD. If you are passionate about research, then do it. Yes, I gave years of my 20s for my PhD, I don't regret one bit. Now, the value I am getting and the way I am in my life is not measurable by any money!
These apart, many research positions definitely require a PhD or Masters with lottt of publications (which is very very rare)

Yeah, I totally agree with @DivyaKulkarni and the other guest in the video, even though I've not done a PhD.
Point is, the kind of intellectual capabilities you gain after doing a PhD (in any subject), you can do so many amazing things in life with that intellect.
I've personally met people who've done PhD in the US, and I can definitely say that their ability to think through any topic is way deeper.

Actually, it depends. If you are getting an average job but top Ph.D. programs in the US then top PhD programs are better than average jobs. But jobs are better if you have job offers from top companies with great packages and you really don't have much inclination towards research at an early stage. The guy who has both can think about the suggestions given in this video. But PhD from a low-tier university under an advisor unknown in their field is not worth it.

  • @palindrame
    @palindrame 3 місяці тому +3

I think that the whole premise of Let’s do a PhD because I’m not getting a job is heavily flawed. If you enter into a PhD program with this mentality, you will have an insanely bad time. The primary motivation to do a PhD should be the sheer joy of studying the subject we so dearly love and then try to make an effort to contribute to the already existing pool of knowledge. Also comparing salaries you get in an MNC and the PhD stipend is not justified. The very expectation that you’ll be payed like an MNC, stems from the fact that you entered into the PhD program because you didn’t get a job (which shouldn’t have been the primary motivation in the first place ). Also there are many jobs that exclusively require a PhD as a minimum eligibility criteria, however I do agree that they are way lesser in number.

In the provided transcript, the argument against pursuing a Ph.D. and in favor of opting for a job after a master's degree is built on several key points:
    1. **Long-Term Commitment and Potential Delays:**
    - The speaker emphasizes that a Ph.D. is a marathon, taking several years and potentially extending into one's late 20s or early 30s.
    - Points out potential delays in thesis approval and qualifying exams, which may extend the duration of the Ph.D. program.
    2. **Toxic Comparisons and Lifestyle Differences:**
    - Raises awareness of the psychological impact of comparing oneself with friends who are well-settled in jobs, highlighting potential toxicity in such comparisons.
    - Notes that, despite being fully funded, Ph.D. salaries may not match those in the tech industry, impacting lifestyle choices.
    3. **Financial Considerations:**
    - Compares the financial implications of a tech job and a Ph.D. over a four-year period, suggesting that the return on a Ph.D. may not be significantly higher.
    - Argues that savings and investments from a tech job may outpace the financial benefits of a Ph.D.
    4. **Value of Ph.D. vs. Master's:**
    - Asserts that a Ph.D. does not add substantially more value than a master's degree, indicating that 90% of the skills needed for a Ph.D. are already gained during master's studies.
    - Challenges the notion that a Ph.D. provides a significantly higher salary or better career prospects.
    5. **Advice for Limited U.S. Experience:**
    - Advises students to gain 1-2 years of work experience before considering a Ph.D., suggesting that this experience in the tech industry may reveal that a Ph.D. is not essential for research roles.
    6. **Encouragement for Job Seekers:**
    - Encourages students to diligently pursue job opportunities before deciding on a Ph.D.
    - Argues that risking a Ph.D. without attempting a job may be a significant and potentially regrettable decision.
    7. **Challenges of Quitting a Ph.D. for a Job:**
    - Acknowledges the difficulty in changing the mindset from a Ph.D. to a job-oriented approach.
    - Highlights that job offers for those with a Ph.D. may be fewer compared to those with a tech job.
    8. **Choosing the Right Environment for a Ph.D.:**
    - Stresses the importance of having the right mentor, community, and friends during a Ph.D., suggesting that these factors significantly impact the success of the program.
    9. **Final Thoughts:**
    - Concludes by suggesting that a Ph.D. may be suitable for those with a passion for research and teaching but recognizes the complexity of the decision.
    - Leaves room for potential responses from others in the field, indicating an open-ended perspective on the matter.

Bro please ... This video by Harnoor seems highly biased, overlooking the benefits of pursuing a PhD over a Master's degree.
If your aim is to start earning money earlier, consider doing Competitive Programming in India first, then transitioning to Software Development roles and eventually exploring research opportunities. PhD offers autonomy, ownership, networking opportunities, and the chance to publish regularly. It's not just about climbing a career ladder; it's a deeper dive into research and academia. Look beyond the prestige of universities and professors; focus on building relationships and inclusivity in the lab. PhD is about personal growth and living in the present, not just obtaining a degree. It's a reversible decision; you can still pursue other paths after completing your Master's. Not everyone has the privilege to take risks like Harnoor; for some, a PhD may be the best option for career advancement. In India, research funding and opportunities may be limited compared to countries like the US. Penetrating fields like Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) research can be challenging but rewarding. PhD programs are competitive and offer financial support, unlike many Master's programs. A PhD in ECE opens doors to stable career paths with iterative improvements driving technological breakthroughs. Passion isn't the only requirement for a PhD; a supportive environment and routine are crucial. Regrets about not pursuing a PhD are rare among those who have experienced its benefits firsthand.
Videos like Harnoor's should incorporate diverse perspectives and research-backed evidence to provide balanced insights.Pursuing a PhD in the US offers the opportunity to impact research projects without financial burden. With research experience and publications, transitioning from Bachelor's to PhD is a confident decision.

I have a PhD from a renowned IIT. The PhD story in India is different. People do PhD for getting fellowship. once they get in PhD they can't get out and they do slavery for their professors for 5+ years (can go up to 6 to 7 years for IITs).
Students in India take admission in PhD usually at the age of 25 or higher. they graduate around when they are 30+ years old.
Private college pay meagerly to fresh PhDs (usually package is 10 to 15 LPA in best private universities). The competition for Regular Professor in govt universities is cut throat. You can't get in unless you have strong recommendations.
What's left for PhD holders is PostDoc which they prefer for same reason they preferred PhD in the first place.

You seriously don't get what a Ph.D. is all about. Please, stop making videos about stuff you've never lived through. Just because you might end up marrying an American girl with a potential marriage-based Green Card doesn't mean you understand what Indians go through. Getting a Ph.D. isn't just about money; it's about diving deep into research. And let's be real, if you're out there breaking laws and making illegal cash as an immigrant, you're not gonna get why dedication to research matters.

You shouldn't speak about something which you never experienced. You should make videos regarding the benefits of Tech jobs and why we should take it.... instead of making videos how phD can destroy your life. Every profession has it's own advantages and disadvantages. You shouldn't belittle a profession to make another look better.

The Real Question is : Why don't people working full-time in industry teach as well? Like I would want to get taught from a technical architect. Why is this teaching route only made mainstream for Phd folks????????

    • @semiconductorguy
      @semiconductorguy Місяць тому

If you are looking at R1 universities as a tenure track faculty, their main goal is research - pushing the state-of-the-art! Teaching is secondary, and teaching colleges do hire candidates with a masters degree. Also, there are quite a few adjunct positions at top universities which hire industry professionals part-time. This is mainly to fill a gap in their department with the expertise that the adjunct faculty brings in.

It's similar to "I never went to FAANG but believe me FAANG sucks, just go for a startup or Microsoft will be easy and get a better salary" or "I never went to Ivy league or a top school, but believe me Ivy league is just going to increase your student loan" PhD is a path for the most passionate people, it has some prestige to it rather than doing MS from a below 100 university. Not everyone measures their career by only the amount of money they earn. The title is just cluelessly stupid and clickbaity. It's audacious to spread PhD really destroys someone's careers just after getting some below average MS. You will not be able to apply to way many jobs even in tech industry alone without a PhD like Research Engineer, Research Scientist, etc.
