Awesome review! I've been intruiged by this film for a while. If you're looking for another GKIDS film that could make for an interesting review then I can highly reccomend My Entire High School Sinking Into the Sea, it's really quite something.
I just watched the film in theater last Wednesday and as a film buff and animation student, this film feels like a slap in the face to actual filmmakers and film students out there. Gene somehow just went from being a production assistant to straight up movie director after just editing a trailer (even though we never learned whether he ever had any experience making short films by himself or doing anything related to filmmaking other than just watch movies), Natalie also landed her first big role despite never had any acting experience before hand, and then there's Pompo's truly, truly awful belief that she instilled into Gene and somehow nobody even dispute how stupid and completely flaw way of thinking toward filmmaking. I'm sorry, but this film is really a big disappointment for me, the good animation production value, no matter how creative and fun to watch, just couldn't save the shallow story where everything so conveniently happened that just let them all achieved what they want so easily without running into any tangible challenge that would make me really root for Gene or anyone else in the film.
I mean, at some level, you have to understand that film making isn’t something you actually need to study and get a degree on to do well. Just Google to see how many big names show up for directors that never attended film school. Also, just want to point out a very similar example to the character in Michael Bay. All he did was produce music videos and commercials, and yet, his first movie Bad Boys was a hit. At the end of the day, film making is not like building a bridge where a single miscalculation could lead to collapse. Even a technically imperfect set of shots can get the job done and creates its own aesthetic in film making.
I haven't watched this movie yet, but I see that it has full potential so I'll might check this baby out.

Hey there Alexander! Long time no see buddy!
I wonder if snails think about life?
As for Natilie I see her as the Deuteragonist in the first half while Alan is the deuteragonist for the second half.
What software do YOU use for editing?
At the moment I use Vegas Pro 17. I want to eventually switch to 19 though!
What the heck, this this amazing animated movie went under my radar...?
It's still new! I only found this copy on an anime website.
