In this video I have covered the very important setup black could employ against the London System - the Grünfeld.
For the introduction to the London Systems, and other setups for black, watch the London playlist: • Introduction to the Lo...
The Grunfeld Defense is characterized by black fianchettoing his kingisde bishop and by playing the move d5, making a sort of hybrid between classical and Indian defenses against d4. The Grunfeld is normally a very sharp opening, and it leads to aggressive positions for black when white plays the main lines (with d4 and c4).
When played against the London System, though, it’s a whole new story. Against the London system, the Grunfeld setup is a great weapon to equalize with, and it gives black very easy play, and simple plans to go for. In truth, if black plays correctly, white really cannot hope for an advantage.
Still, for London System players, the Grunfeld should be an annoyance, but not a reason not to play the opening. Just remember that you don’t play for a quick kingside attack against it. The best plan is to play for a small positional advantage on the queenside.

I am a Grünfeld player and struggled a lot to properly play against the London. Although this video was designed mainly for London players it really helped me. thx

I am more of King's Indian guy but when it comes to London or Colle I can't resist the urge to play the Grunfeld.

Hello Stjepan. Congratulations and thank you for the great work.
I would have a question. The KID and Grünfeld variations share the first two moves as follows: 1. d4 Nf6 2. Bf4 g6. However, in the KID video you recommend 3 Nc3, whereas in the Grünfeld video you recommend 3 Nf3 (and Nbd2 after that, with the consequence the possible e4 (contingent on ...d5 not being played) is played on move 5 instead of on move 4, and that White cannot play Qd2 preparing to exchange Bs on h6). Assuming we do not know our opponent, would you consider one of the two (i.e. 3. Nc3 etc. or 3. Nf3 etc.) a better line than the other?

I personally delay Nf3 after black plays e6. Anyway, your question doesn't make much sense, both move orders you analyze are equivalent, if there is a difference between them then it is still in centipawns. The main advantage of the London system, in my eyes, is that it is a universal setup you can use against many black moves. I am not the one you are asking, but if I may advice, just simply try both variations in your games and you will see the results. Your results. Where did you feel comfortable or vice versa. Btw. the best move reccommended by Stockfish 11 is 3. c4. And yet, white players (humans) have lost most of the games after it. I wouldnt worry to play it, because first: you discourage d5 and also when blacks plan is to play Bg7 soon than the potentional weekness of Nc3 is not there.

27:55 If Kxf7 then Qf3+ and logical move Bf5 looses the rook. Otherwise yes, as you said, the h3 bishop is lost in both Qf5 and Bf6.

I've spent a few days familiarizing myself with the lines found in the video a year ago and I've been playing against the Grunfeld in this way and what I can say is that this leads to very positional play (which I personally suck at) which then usually lead to draws so I recommend to those watching now who likes more exciting and crazy play (quick attacks etc.) then check out the Barry Attack, which I think was also mentioned somehowhere in this video, or in the series, if I remember correctly. Just leaving it here hoping that it might help some people out.
Also I just want to say that I am by no means telling anyone to not play this and click off this video since I did play this for a year after all, so I just wanted to share my own experience.

why i cant play in the same way as against the kings indian with a queen bishop battery to exchange the black bishop and castle queenside with Nc3 and go with an early h5 attack ? is that d5 pawn so annoying as a d6 pawn?
