Astal is a 2D side scrolling platform game for the Sega Saturn. Astal was released early in the Sega Saturn's life and used hand-drawn graphics. The animations for the cutscenes were provided by TMS Entertainment.

The first time I ever played this game, I was left in awe of how beautiful everything about it was. The graphics, design, music, SFX, and story were all just so wonderfully put together in a crystalline world. 💎 Astal was one of my favorite Saturn games. Thanx 4 posting!

When I bought my Sega Saturn, I also bought Astal and Guardian Heroes. Those games and console really left an amazing impression on the next gen 32-Bit era. Thank you for sharing Astal. It’s a beautiful game that flew under the radar. Up next, y’all be doing Guardian Heroes, right? ;)

I wish we still got 32-bit Sprites, nearly all retro inspired games are 8-bit and in a few cases 16-bit.
i kind of relate but at the same time making art of this level takes so much effort you could just as well make an HD game x-x while character sprites are pixel art, it would seem backgrounds are hi-resolution art scaled down ( maybe even a scanned traditional medium of some sort? )
but yea would be cool to see some indie devs attempt this kind of stylization nonetheless

One of mine too, I don't have a large Saturn collection but this is one of the games I do have.
This was my first Saturn game...I saw Sega Lord X review it and fell in love with the art style.
There are so many games on the Saturn that should get a modern console release or a remake and they don’t. Far less deserving games got that privilege.
Yeah no need for a 3rd port of The Last of Us...that's only part of what's wrong with the modern gaming industry, crap like that keeps getting released over and over and people still buy it over and over and something cool like Astal is lost to the Saturn.
