I think Daniel Daphin (spelling?) talks about the frothy mouth in his bit course. Lathering of saliva is a sign of a busy mouth because the proteins get frothed - so the if this is real or manufactured (marshmallow etc), the look and popularity of a frothy mouth is bad science and suggests a horse who isn’t swallowing and is not accepting the bit with a soft relaxed jaw. I paused it in a few different spots and the flash is closer to the bit when you talk about it towards the end but when he’s closer to the vertical the flash slides a little farther down but it looks like it’s on the same hole. I wouldn’t consider this an improper use of a flash. However, I don’t think a flash should ever be necessary. If the horse gapes at the mouth- they need a different bit. If they put their tongue over the bit- they need a different bit. A flash is unnecessary at best and all to often cruel. FEI rules will allow for a flash but bitless bridles are prohibited- that frustrates me.
I think the saddles with the large blocks holding the rider’s upper leg in place should be banned. Then let’s see who rides well . . . Also, the large blocks in front of the thighs is providing the counter force to hold a rolkeur. Bracing the person in place. It’s not a coincidence that style of saddle came about at the same time as over bent horses and heavy hands.
Just the amount of foam in the horses mouth. If it isn’t marshmallows/sweets or clover drool then it means the parotid (salivary) glands are compressed and the horse is beating the saliva up with the tongue trying to avoid the pressure of the bit. Usually out of tension and a too-compressed neck. Not a good PR look to have this much foam in the mouth, just my two cents.
When I used to ride, we were always told to give them a sugar cube to get them to salivate to "get on the bit". I never noticed that it worked. I just like giving my horse a treat before I got on. Could it be as simple as giving a treat before riding? I think we have to be careful of our criticism, as she states in her remarks here. Criticism, while important in this abusive environment, can have an undesired effect by making accusations that turn out to be incorrect.
@@janets6474 The thing is that giving a treat won't make a horse magically be on the bit, which is also a term that most people are misunderstanding to no end. On the bit is basically just the horse being engaged with nose in front of the vertical, with the poll at the highest and no negative tension. Most don't even know this can and should be achieved without holding reins too. Only a couple classical dressage riders still know how it should be used and understood. I just really don’t like that so many top riders need to use nose bands at all! Why do they need it? I get that oh it’s a young horse, but still if truly the whole point of nosebands is to “keep the bit from moving about in the horses mouth correct” if a bit moves so much in a horses mouth maybe it’s to big?
