      Hydrangea are easy to work with and are hardy ! They dry looking almost exactly like they do alive, if they are white the leaves will turn off white but are beautiful !
      I live in northern Minnesota and you can get them free, everyone has them in their yard !

    • @Bloominous

      Natasha Darden For this type of tall hydrangea centerpiece, you really just need a tall Pilsner Vase (they come in various heights) and some sort of plastic liner that goes on top of the Pilsner Vase. You can even fill up the Pilsner Vase with water and have LED lights in there (very popular these days) and have the Hydrangea piece on top!

    I did a centerpiece with hydrangeas. Unfortunately I didn't see this video before hand... I did 2 things you recommended we do not do. One was pressing the foam block in water and the other was removing and reinserting the hydrangea to my liking on the block. They were wilted over night, do you think if I used your tips they will not wilt over night or do you think they should be done the morning of the event?

    • @Bloominous
      @Bloominous  8 років тому +1

      +Desiree Loayza Hi Desiree. Yes, that would have fixed the problem. The problem with pressing the foam block in, is that water doesn't get absorbed efficiently, or in other words, not enough water to go around for all the flowers. The second problem is more serious. By reinserting the hydrangeas into an existing hole, it was likely the bottom of the stem was not fully against the foam, and therefore could not drink water. I'm glad these tips helped you out! We at bloominous.com try to make it easy for everyone to DIY, so your comments are greatly appreciated!!

      When working with hydrangeas, wrap the foam in green coated chicken wire for added security of the hydrangea stems-especially if you want a larger diameter arrangement (about 14" to 16" diameter when complete). To prevent wilting of the hydrangeas, smash the tip of stem with a mallet and then soak them in a large plastic tub of cold water and about a cup of Florlite QuikDip for about 15 minutes. Try to keep the entire hydrangea submerged. Once done transfer it to another bucket of water with floral food and then give it a fresh cut once ready to place it in foam. This will allow the hydrangea to take up ALLOT of water and be hydrated and perked when ready to be arranged. Try to do your arrangements the day before the event. If you need to do it two days before, make sure you keep water in the vessel so the foam can stay wet and the flowers can keep drinking. Hydrangeas love ALLOT of water. Hope that helps.

    • @lgemisic
      @lgemisic 8 років тому +4

      +Natalie Reyes- Hi Natalie, I dont have a video but yes, the idea is to submerge the whole hydrangea into the solution that I mentioned in my previous post. I do this ALL the time when working with hydrangeas (specifically if they will be used in foam as opposed to a vase full of water). I have this black plastic tub (23"L x 13"D x 14"H) that I purchased from Ikea years ago. It was once used for storage but now its used for submerging the hydrangeas. I put that bad boy into the bathtub a fill it with water about 3/4 of the way then pour in about a cup of the QuikDip. I mix it with my kitchen spoon or spatula. Then I take a sandwich plastic bag and insert the stem of the hydrangea, and on the floor of my bathroom, I smash the tip of the stem with my mallet (the sandwich bag keeps the bathroom floor clean). Then I remove the plastic bagc and plunge the hydrangea into the tub of solution and move on to the next flower and so forth until there is no more room in the black container. I then go with my hand and submerge them again and again (just keep pushing them down). When Im done submerging them (after about 15 minutes), I transfer them into a bucket of water that has flower food in it and let them sit until Im ready to make my arrangements. This method also works for orchids. :-)

      First you fill a bucket with cold water, cut the stem, dip it in water with flower preservative, then pull out the stem dip it well in the spice alum, then put into your arrangement. The alum will help them hold up for a very long time and spraying the hydrangea with something like crowning glory makes them last even longer!!!

      She may not like being recorded or even publicly instructing but at least she made an effort to do a video, if not a public one. Good on her for sharing what she did. I'd be nervous as heck too! I honestly didn't think she sounded nervous tho 💜.

    My cousin did something similar for her wedding but the vase that was used to hold the centerpiece was filled up with water and had fairy lights inside.

    The foam dries out if not watered. So the Hydrangeas will become Dry flowers in time otherwise. I do know they can be dry flowers to keep too but would need to be sprayed with hair spray to hold them, but not heavily.
    The decorating was lovely and enjoyed it, but flowers just do not always last forever, of course, but know Hydrangeas can live awhile, not sure of the rest, but they will and can dry if they do not have the moisture.

      Why would you spray with hair spray? Of course these will be expected to die within 3-7 days depending on how you care for it after the design work.
