I thought the "thicker fretboard = more tone" marketing claim was a little strange, but I thought this one sounded great!

I have the 2018 version of this guitar and absolutely love it you are correct I've had many high-end Custom Shop Les Paul's and it actually sounds just as good as those did! What I really like about this guitar is the Unbound neck the first Les Paul's gold Tops didn't have bound necks and I always thought that was cool

They should go back to using MOP and albalone inlays on guitars instead of the plasticity things they’ve been using, my 77 les Paul customs inlays look way better than my 2012 les Paul studios! and Idk how they could even call it a tribute to the 50s lps with dot inlays! they just don’t want a better deal than a standard lp.. Idk why they always compete with there own models instead of just releasing a whole line of nice guitars that people would actually buy

The easy answer to nuts with uneven slots cut in: Zero-frets. They're awesome: Easy to set up, providing an even tone between open and fretted strings, and uniform action at the first fret.
Gold Tone makes a product, "Zero-Glide," that retrofits in a zero-fret nut system without any additional routing. I had one put in on my Strat, and love it.

I just traded for one of these in this exact color. I was hesitant at first, but it turns out to be one of the best Les Pauls I’ve ever played. Plus, I love the rougher gold top finish, as I’ve never been a fan of gold tops prior (I just don’t get the hype). But this genuinely looks great, plays like butta, and sounds even better.

Trogly I love this video this has been my exact dream guitar for a WHILE, (specifically the gold top) I saw one "used" in guitar center. the employee that got it down said the guy who "used" it had it for three days until he sold it to guitar center, he didn't buy it there, so they had to tag it at $800, he wasn't lying either I looked at the frets and how the strings were wound on it. The frets were still shiny and the strings were still factory. I played it for four hours... Don't get me wrong my tobacco burst Epi Les Paul Trad Pro II is awesome but MAN I WANT ONE OF THESE SO BAD ;)
Edit: I bought one today, I believe I'm the happiest guy alive 🤣

An addition for anyone looking for a Tribute - the final model year 2018 before they were downgraded and merged with the Studio line gained further upgrades (in Europe at least) over Trogly's 2017 model, confirmed with my luthier on receipt (new) - he was keen to take it apart also - shocked at the price. The 2018 Gold Top Tribute was steered towards an early 70's run of Gold Top Deluxe models which were the first GTs since 1958 to feature a full size humbucker - a later '68 Deluxe for example, had mini hum-buckers reminiscent of a P90 in size. In keeping with the period (these were popular in Rock / Blues) the 2018 model does include the 498T in the bridge - so you did get the 490 / 498 custom shop favourite, Trogly mentions in the video. More firepower for solos.
The guitar retained the traditional elements of mahogany back, carved maple cap, rosewood fingerboard, trapezoid inlays, Gibson Deluxe tulip tuners like the earlier Tributes although it was not vaulted in 2018 and so more in keeping with the 70's Deluxe it was modelled on. Opinion: no traditional Les Paul guitars should be vaulted - this has been spun by marketing but is largely a practice to accommodate cheaper, heavier types of mahogany wood cut from younger trees - original LPs had aged mahogany (old trees) which was lighter in its nature.... and no holes drilled into the body.
In addition, the 2018 Tributes had the Plek fret-levelling process previously custom shop (and a $300 fee outside the factory) so no high or dead frets - the fret ends just needed a little finishing off and final dressing. The nut is Gibson's TekToid faux bone nut (read plastic) but does its job. This required a little work, channels were set high and rear face had burrs - we over-cut it for 11s, cleaned up the burrs and added a little FastFret into the grooves - no string binding at all and it holds tuning beautifully.
Nitrocellulose laquer was the final touch over the normal (awful) thick polyurethane of budget guitars - semi satin ( with a sheen) on the gold face and satin on the back which should wear in nicely on the neck when played. The gig bag was also upgraded 2018 to a thickly padded case (not a hard shell - lighter but excellent protection) and with a neck support internally.
So where are the short cuts over a 2018 LP Standard? Note: to connoisseurs of vintage guitars these will be an anathema but to the rest of us mortals they largely don't have an impact on playability. I cannot argue about tone as everything on a guitar affects tone including the type of wood, neck joint, nut, bridge etc etc although if you don't own a vintage Les Paul it largely wont upset you.
    - short tenon neck joint
    - maple cap is (believed to be) less thick and a shallower carve than Standard although not noticeably
    - Nashville bridge - not a traditional ABR1 - this is a change from the 70's and should have been included (opinion) with the posts drilled directly into the wood
    - no binding on the body or neck (body has the maple cap exposed which looks like an ageing yellowing binding)
    - tektoid nut is cheap but a tusq / graphtech wont break the bank
    - the wiring is PCB with easy connect - no metal plate, 50's wiring or paper/oil caps... you do get full size Gibson branded pots which work perfectly well (albeit without the 50's tone pot nuance )
    - the headstock cap is likely plastic (not a veneer over mahogany) and Gibson logo a decal rather than silk screen
    - no strap locks, no grover tuners, no hard case
    - the inlays are plastic, not mother of pearl
    - gold top is satin finished - Standard is more of a reflective semi gloss
Bear in mind, this model was HALF the price of a Gibson USA Standard in 2018... the critical bits like the pickups, branded full size pots, fret levelling are there - you can always add a 50's wiring kit, better nut and bridge conversion, Grovers yourself if you really want to chase 60/70's tone. Seen here on delivery pbs.twimg.com/media/DwiQk3tWwAA8913.jpg. and coupled with its new best friend, a Marshall Dual Super Lead Vintage (valve) amp. pbs.twimg.com/media/D0HnpzMX4AASpLA.jpg - these go together like Vic and Bob (or Abbot and Costello for US readers).

I know this is a couple years old - YT just recommended this video to me.
The electronics module needs to be recognized as inspired by Taylor Guitars - their discontinued SolidBody line used a "quick change" electronics package like this with a circuit board with mounted tone caps etc. Like other industry successes, this is a direct descendant of their innovation.

I like my 2018 Tribute in the honey burst finish. By the way, the honey burst has darker coloured back & neck than the gold top but overall I prefer the honey burst because 1, I like the burst better than the solid gold, and 2, I prefer the look of the visible wood grain through the honey burst.
As far as I'm concerned, the 2018 is the best quality & best value out of all of the different years Tribute models. It has none of the awful weight relief of other Tributes, I specifically wanted all of the mahogany in tact on a gibson LP that I was going to buy, because I wanted it to be as close as possible to the older guitars. The 2018 model also came with a beautiful embroidered soft shell case which, alone, on the gibson website cost around £140.
I like the lack of binding on the body & neck. The only things I don't like so much are the 498T bridge pickup, it's too hot for my liking. The 490R neck pickup however, is a great little pickup, but I always planned to wind myself a nice set of PAF tribute pickups and wire my own vintage wiring harness and will just sell the stock pickups & wiring. I shall make all those as soon as I've played my guitar in and worn out the original strings that the guitar came with - waste not want not.😆
I'm so glad I managed to get my 2018 Tribute because there's no way I'd be buying the 2019 Tribute because gibson have basically stripped some features away from the 2018 and have increased the price by about £350 !!
My honey burst cost me £749 which was a great price, but the 2019 model where I live is around £1100, sometimes more depending on where you shop.

Generally, and I say this based on playing on stage for 55 years and having owned dozens of guitars, some bad, fair, good, and excellent: The whole tone wood and "thickness" discussion is a total waste of oxygen and ink. Proper setup, quality of construction, electronics, and quality of hardware are EVERYTHING. Any attempt at determining that fingerboard species and thickness making any difference in tone is pointless. The same is true for the body species discussion. Alder versus ash (which density?), versus mahogany, versus korina, Koa, etc., et.. All baloney. Amateurs just trying to sound like experts. You do have a nice channel, very nicely produced, and I do appreciate what you do. Just had to weigh in.

I paid about $900 for my 2017 Tribute HP, I call that a score!!! :) A few things that I don't like, the fret ends are not rounded, they didn't use filler on the fretboard and it looked horribly dried when I got it, thankfully MusicNomad F-One oil made it look 1000 times better. The finish on the neck is a little sticky, which I sanded down slightly with 1000 grit but it still feels kinda sticky.

Happy with my 2017 goldtop. Love the pickups, it's resonant and it sustains well. Really, it doesn't matter if it's a Studio or an R9 - either the Wood Gods smiled on it or they didn't. Normally I like a fatter neck on Gibsons, but this one plays well and has a good solid feel to it. Mine also appears to be a one-piece body. One caveat: the satin nitro finishes wear through very quickly, especially the back and neck.

    • @guyincognito320
      @guyincognito320 Рік тому

I would add a coat or two of nitro to the neck couple years, to avoid burning through the stain down to the wood. Satin over a pale wood tone is very easy to do at home by hand, just needs a little finishing with an auto pad, 3000 grit. Gloss finishes however take a lot of skill and a buffing wheel, or it'll look very DIY.

@@guyincognito320 That's exactly what I did - I built up a gloss finish with a few more coats of nitro. A lot of work for a Studio, but it's a particularly good one.

I love the 490T/R combo, nice balance between the pickups. The "natural binding" is really nice and the unbound neck is a huge plus in my book. I have never liked Gibson's binding nubs on the fretboard, they have a nasty habit of catching the bottom E string, particularly on guitars that have been through a lot of climate changes (expansion and contraction). As S G said, its a crying shame Gibson decided to go with dot inlays on the '19s, the trapezoid inlay to me is one of Gibson's identifying marks, I don't think I will ever buy one with dot inlays....
I wish I could get my hands on a beat to hell Gibson LP where I live but sadly, living in Europe there are nowhere near as many project guitars to be found and the shipping cost from the US makes the project a waste of time and money, better to just buy a decent used guitar and be done with it at that point. One day I will have to go to the US and pick up something I can refinish and mod to my liking, that and a decent vintage(ish) gold top, probably from one of the less desirable eras :)
Love the vids Trogly, keep doing what you do.

2018 was even better - they went back to solid mahogany body, gave it Plek fret levelling and a 498 in the bridge which took this close to a 60's CS guitar in the set up. Not sure exact specs of this 2017 but the 2018 had arch maple top, one piece mahogany back (no vaulting), mahogany neck, thick rosewood on the fret board and retained the lightweight aluminium hardware, tombstones, trapezoid inlays, satin nitro-cellulose etc. The PCB will upset some people but the parts all all branded Gibson USA and if you want 50's wiring and orange drops / bumblebees you can do that yourself. The fret ends were decent and just needed a light polish. I had the bone re-cut for 11's and the back face angles rounded off - bit of graphite and no tuning issues at all in last 8 months. Oh and for Trogly... the 2018 had a beautiful brown leather / gold Gibson branded formed gig bag included... maybe they listened to you. Fantastic guitar. pbs.twimg.com/media/D4Mz6b8XsAIVPz3.jpg

4:07 I have a few Gibsons with that type of back plate and all I get is static. My best solution (and results) is, painting the cavities with shielding. …Those new back plates are terrible.

what you got jammed under the G string on the nut? Is it because it another poorly built guitar by Gibson? Also, where you said the fret board was being conditioned, with what?

Sigh. I found this exact model just after buying a studio. Could have sold the studio, but this one would have probably been gone by the time. Now I love the studio, will not sell, but also would like a gold top, but there is just no justification to buy one. Only halfway justified option would be to get a gt with p90s.
