- Click on CC for subtitles in English but this is a part of documentary that was made 20 years after the Vestmannaeyjar eruption in 1973 and describes how the inhabitants worked their way from the shock and rebuilt the island.
Unique aerial photo from 1973 before the town was cleaned, fully restored in high quality for even large format prints.

Thank you for visiting the Just Icelandic Channel.
Greetings from Iceland. Gylfi
Thank you very much for sharing this! :-)
My pleasure!
I remember this from when I was a little kid. My grandparents told me that it was in Iceland, but I was to young to know where Iceland was.
I remember watching that live on TV. When I flew to Europe via Iceland in 1986, we fllew over Surtsey on the way eastwards and I was amazined at how big all the volcanoes were.
Lucky you :) it's amazing place, the islands
I was 8 and we were glued to the TV in Denmark as a family. Couldn’t believe what was happening. School was interesting.
I was 16 yrs old when this occurred and remember watching the water being used to slow down the lava on the news. Was thinking how brave they were trying to save their beloved town. Funny how devastation can be turned to good , quite the tourist industry now. However, don't think I'd want to live with a steaming volcano in my backyard. I'm comfortable with the one I can see from my house that is 60 miles away that let's off small amts of steam occasionaly.
Most of the Icelandics evacuated. Then the Icelandic government asked for volunteers from the U.S. military to go to the island and shovel ash off the buildings so they wouldn't collapse. Some of the ash on the flat topped factories was 3-4 feet deep. I was one of the luck volunteers as I was stationed in Keflavik at the naval air station. I was there for 3 days and nights put up in the school.
17:50 Trabant!!
It was very interesting, big thank you
Glad you enjoyed it
Wow!
Welcome :)
My grandpa was among the fishermen that evacuated the citizens
Thanks for sharing :)
You should feel very proud of him and what he accomplished for the good of others!
@@pbeadling He sadly passed away in 2016, but when i was little he was my hero, so i was surely proud and looked up to him
Really interesting. I do not remember hearing about this at the time. I was young, my husband was in the US Navy on a ship over near Vietnam. I guess I was more interested in the war news at the time.
Fantastic! I totally agree with the man who said that he much rather lives nearby a vulcano, than a nuclear plant !
Welcome :)
Thanks for sharing Gylfi, I might have to learn Icelandic due do my interests in geology and youyr special island up North ;-)
Go for it! and this playlist on mine makes it more fun :) ua-cam.com/video/rvJvDzog2BE/v-deo.html
Poor animals always suffer the most.
It's often like that...
@@JustIcelandic yeah my love for animals and life in general gets me worked up sometimes when I see stuff I know I can't change. Stay safe out there.
Rich ones are usually unaffected for the most part.

People think that the water deluge stopped the lava, and it was certainly the largest effort in history, but I don't think it really worked. Lava has no problem flowing completely submerged, even on the seafloor. What really stopped the flow was the eruption ceasing.
I have heard 2 versions about this, some say it worked jut fine and rescues the harbour, others say it piled up the lava that came later crashing down with even more force, it's not for me to say which is right, but I would like to know the answer though
16:25 Is that young man snapping puffins necks? lol!
That's what it looked like to me. Iceland must be stopped!
Yes.
@@scottjustscott3730 Why? Because he is quickly killing the birds? Chicken owners in the US who raise them for food do the same exact thing.
Stopped? He is hunting. We eat those birds. They taste amazing. Love to eat puffins.
That's one of the most humane ways to slaughter fowl. Been done that way since humans have hunted birds.
I read this from National Geographic Society Book when I was a Kid 1992
I have original pictures of the volcano thanks to my grandpa being a badass
Lucky you, this was really something :)
Iceland volcanoes have changed the direction of humanity on several occasions and i fear if one of the big monsters volcanoes awake it will again its just a matter of time?
So this is 1993. Im guessing nothing has happened again since 73. Life just went on. I think they are a very resilient people.
Wow now that was one scary eruption!nothing like the new baby volcano. I do hope one like the one in this video does t happen that’s close to any cities. It’s sad so many historical houses were lost. It looks like a really beautiful place. I’d love to visit Iceland but I doubt I will ever be able to, well unless a I win a lottery! Lol in the meantime I’ll watch videos.
More to come and enjoy :)
Is it also known as haemey, the volcano called Helgafell?
Heimaey and Eldfell :)
@@JustIcelandic was the original volcano on Heimaey called Kirkjufell?
Helgafell is the other volcano next to eldfell
Eric the Red didn't get his name from his hair it was from when he got angry his cheeks would git red, like lava.
