I have used a few of your free patterns and I thank you for making them available. I also agree with you charging for them. We can all contribute! Good luck!
Thanks! Yes, happy to help the way I have over the past few years. Those will always be available…. Now it’s time to change things up a little bit! Thanks for the support!
Yes! Glad to hear you will only releasing paid patterns moving forward. After watching your videos on your free patterns, I understood that even simple patterns require a lot of work. Those will always be available for newbies dipping their toes into knitting for the first time, but you gotta get paid for your hard work! Can’t wait to see all your future projects.
I love your tutorials. I’m playing your Fall Bluff tutorial over and over. Thanks to you, I’m making my very first sweater. You definitely deserve to be paid for your patterns, and I’d gladly pay for any new patterns you create. Thanks for helping me progress in my knitting. I’d love to see knitting books from you!
You’ve been soooooo generous with everything you’ve shared on your channel. So much valuable information. I just finished your shawl collar cardigan and it turned out perfect! Your honesty is where you shine☺️. Don’t forget to tell your viewers to LIKE and SUBSCRIBE and share😉. 👍👏👏👏🤗🇨🇦
The transparency is so much appreciated! Especially for those of us that haven’t delved too deeply into that side of things. I learned to knit using your free items, and will happily pay going forward! As someone mentioned, I would buy any books, instructional guides, or any other materials for that matter you produce.
Ashley you are our knitting angel. Your love of knitting and helping others will come back to you by the thousands In money and positive good vibes. You are very special! I wish you a prosperous 2023!! You deserve it 😘😘😘❤️❤️❤️
Thank you so much for being so transparent. I really appreciate the honesty. I am planning to start my own blog soon with the hopes of blooming it into a fiber business. These numbers are really helping me manage my expectations. You've earned yourself a new subscriber! Cheers!
Yes, thank you very much for the free patterns and the videos that got along with them. Your patterns are well written and the videos are clear and easy to follow. Good luck in the coming year.
I'm so grateful for your videos. Thank you for the step-by-step tutorials. I love them. I gladly pay, and have paid, for your patterns. It's a tremendous amount of work you put into creating these and you should charge for them. I'm totally awed by you. How you manage to raise and care for three children, a husband, a dog, and a home, and put all that time into creating patterns and grow a business is amazing!
Thank you so much for the transparency! It's so helpful on this way! I'm giving it a go this year and decided to finally publish my patterns. If ever you decide to spread out to the German speaking market with your patterns, I'd be glad to be your partner in crime translating for you!
I officially and successfully learned knitting through your Winter Bluff Bluff sweater pattern and will always grateful for every free pattern you've provided us here, and also from your blog where I found you. Thank you so much! You deserve it and look forward to seeing more of you 😁
Great update. Really interesting to hear about where and how the money comes in. I’ve always thought it so generous of you to give away so much free stuff. I’m always happy to pay for a pattern. I absolutely love the idea of being able to design my own sweater. I am currently using Elizabeth Zimmermann’s book to make a sweater for my husband. It starts from my swatch gauge and all the calculations extends from there. Let’s see how it turns out 😉 Looking forward to seeing your plans coming into fruition.
Thank you for your transparency! I love your videos and patterns. You really have done a wonderful job providing so much free content . I have watched all of your videos and my next purchase pattern is going to be your cable sweater. I just love that pattern! Am so happy to hear you will also publish some books and also some worsted weight patterns! So exciting!
Thank you for sharing and being so transparent. Love your podcast and have found your tutorials so helpful. I've knitted some of your free patterns; they are very well-written. I'm looking forward to the new patterns you will publish and would totally pay for them.
I made my first ever top-down sweater through your video one year ago and this September I’m about to start my masters degree in knitwear design, I think there is « thanks » for you in this whole story 😍❤️ so, thank you very much!
@@AshleyLillisKnits thank you again ❤️ the way you explain things + the love and effort you put in all this cost a lot more than the numbers you’ve mentioned, good luck to you too 🌻
I bought the wildwood, I love your patterns and I have the free ones and wanted to buy one to say thank you for the incredible patterns you make. Your hard work is appreciated
Thank you for keeping it real and we absolutely think you deserve to get paid for any pattern you produce. I will forever be grateful for your free content that taught me so much, above all how to design for myself. I have followed the fall bluff tutorial using worsted weight yarn and the results were still amazing because your way of expalining is so thorough and detailed. You deserve all that you've earned and more! I wish you tons of luck this year and bigger earnings! Looking forward to your new content. :)
I so appreciate and love your patterns and didn't realize you were giving the majority of them away for free; you deserve to be paid for your time and skills. This transparency in your earnings from all these efforts is eye opening and valuable as well. I apologize if you've already done so, but have you considered Patreon to allow another way for your followers to support you? Even at $5/month, that might be another way to increase revenue. Anyway, love your goals for 2023, thank you so much for your incredibly helpful patterns, tutorials, videos and posts and wish you much continued growth and success!
Love your content. I'm currently working on your winter bluff sweater. Love your tutorials they have helped me so much. I will happily pay for your patterns. Thank you for all you do. ❤
Thoroughly enjoy your tutorials! Not a newbie, but I always learn a new tip or trick. I wish you all the best going forward, I’ll still watch & look for your patterns! Worsted wt yarn is a great go-to for sweaters. I’ll have to dig out some of the Bulky…in stash, somewhere (eek!) Not to add to your “to-do” list, but are you considering a newsletter? Pattern updates, classes etc, might be another avenue. I’m on Ravelry & UA-cam mostly, rarely FB & not on the rest. But that’s just me. I give you a LOT of credit pursuing sooo many ways to reach people. Agree you should charge for patterns, a ton of work goes into creating, advertising (etc etc) for any given design. I’ll be happily following you & your patterns !! Thanks for sharing your knitting & I’m looking forward to what comes next! Thank you!
This was really interesting and the transparency refreshing. I find most people's reluctance to discuss money details very frustrating. I was a demoralized sweater knitter after an attempt at the Cocoknits method and finally was able to be successful with your Fall Bluff. I'm not planning to knit a lot with bulky yarn so am looking forward to seeing some patterns (and tutorials I hope) for worsted weight. Also will point out the importance of offering patterns at sites other than Ravelry since I don't have a PayPal account and don't want one. Thanks for doing what you do, and I will keep an eye on you!
I love your tutorials Ashley! As I said before, it was your Winter Bluff Sweater tutorial that got me knitting my first sweater. It is my go-to pattern for sweaters. I plan on making it with DK weight yarn or even fingering weight yarn. I still can't figure out the math and all... but I am definitely going to try. So, thank you so much for teaching me. The video tutorial absolutely helped me with reading the pattern. I think without the video tutorial, I probably would have had a hard time. I am one of those visual learners. Even though you have previously offered the pattern as a free pattern, I would absolutely pay for it as a paid pattern. I'm also glad that you will now be charging for your patterns. Raglan style - no short rows... in lightweight yarns... I'm for it... :-) Spring is just around the corner... Anyway, thank you again for all that you do.
This video was so good! In the future, I’d love if you made a video (or a course) about grading patterns!! I can’t find any information on that portion of designing knits! Thanks for your transparency, it’s really cool to be able to see how you’ve done & it motivates me to be more consistent! I’m still not in the UA-cam partners program, but I also haven’t been very consistent because life is crazy & I also get discouraged easily because I feel like traction on here has been soooo slow! Thanks again for sharing such vulnerable information & I hope 2023 is even better for you!
Thanks for this info. You are a hard worker!!!!! You should definitely charge for your patterns. They are so cute and give a good jumping off point for innovation. Good luck!!!
This was incredibly helpful! Thank you for taking the time to make such a detailed video about your various income streams. As a songwriter and performer, this gave me a lot of encouragement and ideas about creating content that helps makers and artists approach generating a living wage. When you talk about your UA-cam income, is that solely from ads which run before or intermittently during your videos or does it also include income from when people hit the thank you button on that video and contribute that way, too? I am excited to look up your cardigan pattern. Your Fall Bluff pattern is teaching me to knit my first sweater! Thank you! And thank you for your kind and encouraging manner on your videos!
I love your videos and I wish you the best for 2023! I can’t wait to see what’s new for this year as I recently found your channel, but in my personal opinion I find the shorts annoying; I automatically remove them from my feed. Makes sense that I am seeing more shorts from other content providers if they are being compensated but I delete them without watching. I love watching your content, and I hope that doesn’t sound harsh or rude…just my opinion of the shorts. I’m excited to see your new content for 2023!
You will continue to grow! You’re cute, comfortable with the camera, enthusiastic and you create user friendly patterns. 😊 I look forward to seeing more of your work. Thank you for being so candid in this video. I’m always thinking about how to make my hobby much more. 🧶
Thank you so much for this information Ashley!! ❤❤ I love this. As I am aspiring to start an Etsy it is nice to know what the possibilities are when you put work in. 🥰👌
I discovered your IG yesterday through a reel that someone mentioned your pattern, (a hat ) and was surprised it was free! So I went to your feed and ... I already was following you! but I guess for the algorithms I hadn't seen your posts or profile, I see so many awesome knitters on IG but their patterns are paid, I can't afford right now, and then I came to your youtube channel, your tutorials are so clear and beginner friendly. I'm following the raglan sweater, I haven't finished yet, I really think it's ok you start offering paid patterns, you offered so much free content here! I would buy if I could. How do you make money of youtube? Adds? And what about IG? I didn't know you can get paid for reels. I wish you the best for 2023, I hope seeing more content on others yarns like worsted like. Sorry my English I'm from Argentina 🇦🇷 😅
Thanks, this was really interesting! I’m not looking to go into knitting full time, but I do want to publish some of my patterns and make some spare “yarn money.” I published one sweater pattern in October and made about $80! I know it’s not much, but I was super shocked, since I didn’t expect to sell anything 😅 I hope to be a little more disciplined this year! I spent a lot of time last year trying to grow a tik tok account but didn’t end up seeing much success from it. I don’t think my pattern sales were from there but I could be wrong 🤷♀️ good luck!
