For this one time amateur drummer, both of you are impressive as hell on this complex rhythm. I had the ultimate joy to see Dave Weckl perform with his jazz band many years ago and was blown away by his style and mastery around the drum set. Enjoyed watching and listening to the breakdown! And Vic Firth was always my choice for quality drum sticks!
Special thanks to Austin for making this video for us! If you haven't checked out his channel before, make sure you do so here! ua-cam.com/users/abbdrums
hello, I like your dave weckl video explication! Could try to make an other dave weckl video when he has played with buddy rich big band ( bugle call ragg solo)! I like this technique, he use too much sextplets!
Fantastic video Austin! Dave Weckl is a world class musician and master drummer. He's SO Relaxed with his musical phrasing on the kit with his silky smooth approach. Poetry in motion!
That is great Austin! Man, just hearing you verbally communicate the concept of being able to hear upbeat triplets at higher tempos really helped me out - been playing drums for many many years and have experienced that brain trick so many times but have never really put much thought to it - THANK YOU!!
really enjoying this series. I think a breakdown of the first ten seconds of 'Vinnie Colaiuta live at the baked potato part 5' on youtube would be a great installment. It's the most savage ten seconds of drumming I've ever seen.
My ego had prevented me from subscribing to this channel and it was because subconsciously I was trying to avoid reminders of the kind of homework I ought work on in order to enhance my playing vocabulary and abilities to which I could then bring on offer to gigs and band band scenarios. Recently, I've been actively seeking material for earnest work which I finally now have the enthusiasm for and then so now only realised that I hadn't subscribed to this channel still! I've enjoyed these videos even through my stubborn period(private stubborn period though as outwardly I've always praised this guy and his absolutely top breakdowns) but only now subscribed meaning no more accidentally coming across this on my suggested feed. If any other drummer can relate to this, do subscribe, the resource this channel offers you when you come out of your rut is priceless! Have always enjoyed but avoided at the same time. But now it's time for homework so forget that past, covid wasn't fun but not a reason not to grow
So I saw the Study The Greats part if the title and instinctively clicked on it as I always do when I see a new one of your videos and then I realized it was on the Vic Firth channel!! So I believe congrats is in order to you Austin! Really cool to see being able to educate and share these videos with a wider audience!! Drum on!!
Thanks! I've been doing that for a long time in a Latin music assemble but never thought of the structure of it. It came naturally in some of my solos. Now that I'm going back to playing drums this video is definitively helpful.
Austin I'm following you from Costa Rica couple of years ago and happy to see you at Vic Firth 'cause is a recognition for the work you do, congratulations, blessings
Very cool Austin! It is crystal clear & very well explained ....I've check this great solo many times & lifted out that specific lick. You sound great! Thank you
i've said b-4 n i'll say it again ..... '' DUDE .. whe are we gonna see vids of ppl breaking YOUR shit down ? you're good , man so i hope you're getting proper compensation for it1
wow. Great stuff Austin. I enjoyed watching your channel and it is great to see you progress to doing stuff with Vic Firth. You taught me how to transcribe in Logic! It is an invaluable skill
Wow. I've been practicing on my practice pad but I think I. A kit is the only way. Even slow my right hand wants to stop when I do doubles on the toms. I have to find more of your work
Very nice article,Technically the sticking is a right side only flam accent, swiss triplets begin with a double. What program, and where do you obtain to print the transcription. You said Logic. Keep up the good work Thanks
Dave Weckl explains this in his video natural evolution. (dont get me wrong, i appreciate your video, but i think everyone should also check out the sourcem since he explains a lot more concepts around this also). This idea like the blush-da, except without the drags, was allready used in the 50s by some drummers.
Your videos are great! I wonder though... do you figure these licks out yourself or are you part of the illuminate and they just give you these transcriptions??
it turns into a double stoke type of motion. almost like a flam, except he is hitting both hands at the same time. that first hit together, becomes the first note of the double stroke for his left hand. rinse and repeat and it becomes a double stroke feel. the third note comes from his right hand sweep. it would take years of sticking to get it as smooth as austin and dave. you are watching pros do it.
practice doing four stroke singles per hand. right hand = 1E&A left hand = 2E&A right hand 3E&A left hand 4E&A. threes become easier after you do that. much easier once you develop a "moller" type whip. once again you are watching a guy who probably has sticks in his hands most of the time he is awake.
thought I'd chime in here... it's a technique challenge for sure to get those 3 notes out at higher tempos. I guess it is pretty much a Moeller pull out where I let 2 notes bounce out on their own as I bring my hand up and then snap the hand down to get the 3rd accent. It just kind of becomes one fluid motion at higher tempos. If you wanted to practice it, I'd maybe just start with 1 &a's... accenting the 1 with the &a being ghost notes. Then you could bring in the right hand on the 1e's and that's what that 4 note variation is at the end. Hope that helps dude!
i've found that this is extremely difficult unless you have your ride cymbal way up like weckl and austin have theirs. mine is only slightly above my floor tom, so i can't do that slide downhill from the ride to the snare. i pretty much have to somehow pull off a double-stroke from the ride to the snare. can't do it. yet.
I love how Austin's hard work is being recognized and appreciated.
Of all the drummers i've seen live, Weckl is my favorite by far. More Weckl videos please Austin.
I love this series on Austin's channel. I'm glad Vic Firth reached out to him and gave him an opportunity like this.

you're good , man so i hope you're getting proper compensation for it1
Great job man. Very well explained and demonstrated.
Austin's on Vic Firth! I did a double take when i saw the channel :D Thank you for your exemplary discipline and benevolence! Keep on hustling!
groups of 4 in eighth triplets with the sweeping right hand move yields half note triplets on the ride...great stuff!
Thank you for this ! Very helpful !! All the best to you Austin

Austin, is there anyone you cannot clone. Mmmmmm. Terrific work as usual.
Ottima spiegazione. Bravo!
Nice. A great drummer named Eddie Gladden did this many years ago with Dexter Gordon, Jimmy Ponder etc......
Amazing videos Austin!!!!

Thanks Austin! Vic Firth 5A wooden tip!
Great explained boss
Your videos are great! I wonder though... do you figure these licks out yourself or are you part of the illuminate and they just give you these transcriptions??
Cool!!! Thx for sharing!!!! 👍👍👍👍👍
Just keep doing what you're doing. I eat this stuff up. I was surprised that I didn't have much trouble doing it. Well, maybe not quite as fast.
Excellent!!!
How do you get the 3 strokes with the left hand so fast !!
it turns into a double stoke type of motion. almost like a flam, except he is hitting both hands at the same time. that first hit together, becomes the first note of the double stroke for his left hand. rinse and repeat and it becomes a double stroke feel. the third note comes from his right hand sweep. it would take years of sticking to get it as smooth as austin and dave. you are watching pros do it.
+Mussh Wins Thanks man, but I don't mean the triplet action, I mean the last few bars where he plays 3 consecutive strokes with the left hand
practice doing four stroke singles per hand. right hand = 1E&A left hand = 2E&A right hand 3E&A left hand 4E&A. threes become easier after you do that. much easier once you develop a "moller" type whip. once again you are watching a guy who probably has sticks in his hands most of the time he is awake.

U r friggen AMAZING!! Whew!
Brilliant thank you
The BEST !!!!
I like the sound of those toms
AWESOME THANKS BRO
