As you shared, getting an idea for where North, South, East, West. If I'm on a trail, I make sure I stay on the trail. When I go off the trail, I do a time mark-- 15 minutes and I back track until I get familiar with the area. If I have a map of the area, I become familiar with the area's landmarks-- where the river is (creek, stream) where I am. If I plan to hike back the same place, I usually try to leave something to help me find my way back.
A better technique is to make an arrow with branches that tell you what direction you came from and add more arrows as you go along. Looking at a tree for a reference can be confusing because trees look very similar.
This is cool. My grandad was a woodsman who lived bushcraft. He taught me these principles. Pretty amazing you popped up in my feed today. I was just think about how to start teaching my kids and passing it on and here you are!
Just had a big conversation about navigation and compass importance on r/survival. You definitely hammer in the points i brought up, especially with experience
I carry a map compass on a string around my neck, everytime I get off trail to poop or stealth camp I point that compass in direction, turn bezel and "put red in the shed", that compass direction is set, return direction is 180 degrees from that setting. Important, set compass before you go off trail, compass is no good once I get lost. Trails are never straight, if you are 5 degrees off going back u can miss trail entirely. Button compass ain't no good, resolution is over 5 degrees besides you need to set compass before.u get off trail
Dude that's cool I don't live really too far from you , I live in middle eastern Tennessee, born and raised, and have loved the outdoors since I was big enough to get out and go.
Confidence in your sense of direction was enough to get us out of Taum Sauk mountain state park once. A friend and I drove out for a last minute hike with no gear and lost the trail due to water runoffs that looked like trails. It started as t-shirt weather then started getting cold as the sun went down, when we started to head back to the car we realized we weren’t on the trail anymore and neither of us had been paying any attention to even the general direction we’d hiked. Not sure if it was more instinct or guesswork but since my buddy didn’t have a clue which way to go so I looked around and picked the direction I “thought” was right(we were back on the trail in 15-20min, still had to make the 50/50 call when we found the trail but that was right too). In hindsight it was a dumb mistake that could’ve been prevented but it definitely built my confidence on my natural sense of direction. I did spend a lot of time wandering aimlessly through my grandpas woods as a kid, a basic sense of direction and knowing where the creeks ran and the location/direction of the logging roads made it easy to get oriented even after you lost your way.
It might be neat to sometime see you & the guy from channel 'Wander with Will' on some sort of collab. I've told him he reminds me of Don Rickles. 😆 (Ok, ya, I'm old) I think you both are Georgia guys.
