  • In this video, we give an insight into learning to drive with a push-pull accelerator/brake in conjunction with a steering ball. This combination allows a person to drive using only their arms.

    Really glad I watched this. I was worrying about keeping my right arm in the right spot for push/pull, but the idea of resting it on my knee (maybe with a cushion) is great. Really looking forward to getting my car now.

    Excellent video display of the use of the hand controls while we see the road you are traveling at the same time. I am currently making the transition of learning to use hand controls, and your demonstration and commentary is so very helpful. Thank you so much! I do not like the setup I have with the hand controls that came with my vehicle, so your comments are helpful as I look into viable options I may have (indicator switches, brake hold especially). So much to learn and adjust to!

    I'm reading a book right now where one of the characters has hand controls in his car instead of foot pedals and I knew it was a thing but it didn't know exactly how it worked but this was perfect to show me! I not only have a picture of what the book is talking about but also learned a little bit about accessible driving

    Just want to say a huge thank you for your tips on driving with hand controls. I had been out a few times in the last couple of weeks and found the driving really hard, with little feel for the controls and my confidence plummetted. I have just been out again using your advice on holding the throttle/brake and steering ball and the experience was completely different and much more smooth and easier. Thank you so much. I have booked some lessons starting next week too. Becky

    Thank you so much for this video. I was told I needed to go on a course to learn how to use the hand controls - but the course is impossible for me to get to as it's a 300 mile return trip (no suitable public transport) and I have been really worried that I would not manage the hand controls. Now I am confident that if someone legally allowed to drive the car takes it to an industrial estate one evening I will be able to practice and it won't take too long before it becomes second nature.

    So it appears that you have to continue pulling on the accelerator in order to maintain speed(?). I watched other videos of various hand control devices and with many of them the driver was able to take their hands off the controls without the car slowing down. I can't figure out how that works. Maybe there's some kind of ratchet that holds the accelerator down which releases when the brake is applied(?).

    • @InclusiveDriving
      @InclusiveDriving  Рік тому

      I'm not really familiar with other controls available. I guess what you are describing works in a similar way to cruise control.

    How do I get one of these? I'm a very tall person, so conventional hand controls doesn't work. I should say I'm in the United States (Nevada). How much in US dollars does it cost, and do you know if possibly Medicare would cover something like this? And does this work with cruise control?

    Hi. I drive a WAV Sprinter van with push/pull controls and a Lodgerson control on the steering wheel with various functions similar to yours. Up till now ive been driving using my right hand wrapped around the push/pull control. As the distance between the push/pull and my leg is further apart ive got nowhere to rest my arm as in your video. Could i still hold the control the same way as you? Also I find my braking is harsh. Is this because of how I hold the push/pull control? Thankyou.

    • @InclusiveDriving
      @InclusiveDriving  11 місяців тому +1

      You could consider moving the steering wheel further away from you, so you could then move your seat closer to the hand control.
      This will affect the function of the push pull control though, so you would need to get your Adaptation installer involved.

    • @anthonyfagan8543
      @anthonyfagan8543 11 місяців тому

      @InclusiveDriving yeah, I'd thought of that. The pedals are that bit heavier so only using the fingers under the push pull isn't an option. So I've tried placing my thumb over the steering wheel which seems to help. The technique you suggested using the thumb to brake is a great suggestion. 👍

    I have a push pull lever on the right and a standard steering ball. I have my test in two weeks, and I am worried that the examiner will fail me because I can't safely do anything as one hand is on the wheel and one hand on the break/accelerator. I have auto lights and auto screen wipers

    What car make & model are you driving please? I’m a tall lady 6ft1 with severe disability on my right foot. What car do you recommend that would be suitable for my height and the adaptations please?

    • @InclusiveDriving
      @InclusiveDriving  2 роки тому +1

      My car is a Toyota Corolla Hybrid.
      It sounds like you have a few options with adaptations.
      1) Push-pull hand controls as shown in the video.
      2) Left-foot pedal layout, so you drive only with your left foot.
      3) Centre ring accelerator (i don't have this).
      If you undergo a Driving Mobility assessment at a local assessment centre (usually free if a health professional refers you) you'll get some great advice.

    Hello. I’m learning to drive with hand controls also and really struggling with getting the speed right. Imagine you are writing with a pen. Use finger tips and thumb, and a little bit of wrist movement. Try to relax your upper arm and shoulder. Support your lower arm with a cushion if you find your arm is floating in mid air.
      If you are local to Wolverhampton, let me know.

      @@InclusiveDrivingthank you for the reply. It looks like you’re always slightly moving acceleration back and forth to keep it from dropping/going up constantly? Quite tough to get it right. I’m actually in Ireland!

    • @InclusiveDriving
      @InclusiveDriving  3 місяці тому

      @margaretkenny6147 you are correct that we are continuously adjusting it. It's exactly the same as an able-bodied driver would be doing with their right foot. It will come naturally after a while!
      Also, ask your instructor about using cruise control and (possibly) the speed limiter. Most cars have these functions, although you need to check if the hand controls interfere with the safe operation of them.
