not the University of Vienna but of Zurich. he did spend semesters in Vienna and Berlin. btw, Benedict XVI did not really take to Adrienne von Speyr. I think this demonstrates a clear difference between Balthasar and Ratzinger. In a 2013 essay by Komonchak, quoting Cardinal Ratzinger on Balthasar's use of von Speyr. >> When in 1988 Cardinal Ratzinger gave the Erasmus Lecture for Richard John Neuhaus, he stayed around for a couple of days of conversation about the historical-critical method. During a coffee-break I expressed my reservations about some of Balthasar’s speculations and exegesis, especially his claim that Christ’s descent into hell meant that he suffered the pain of the damned. The Cardinal replied, “Oh, he got all that from Adrienne von Speyr and you know, she used to be a Calvinist.”

Are you sure? This is a quote from the Casa Balthasar website:
“Hans Urs von Balthasar is unthinkable without Adrienne von Speyr. I believe that it can be shown that for all great theologians, any new theological elaboration is only possible if the prophetic element has first paved the way... prophecy and theology go hand in glove. Theology, as theological science in the strict sense, is not prophetic but may only truly become living theology under the thrust and illumination of a prophetic impulse.” (Joseph Ratzinger)
Also, have you read Ralph Martin's essay on von Speyr entitled "Balthasar and Speyr: First Steps in a Discernment of Spirits"? Essential reading to understand the both of them (and somewhat disconcerting, to say the least)

@@crushtheserpent the mystical element is what was missing in Ratzinger's theology. it could be that, in his later years, he came to see the light. as for Ralph Martin, he does NOT accept Balthasar's hope for universal salvation; in fact he misrepresents Balthasar. he is not a reliable guide to Balthasar's theology, and much less von Speyr's.

I just read her biography, about her childhood: ".. the Nanny bragged that my new born brother was already toilet trained. Like an answer he peed right on the apron of the Nanny and a big puddle. I thought this was such a prompt snap back. I knew right away that I would get along great with my little brother" 😂😂😂
