This was released in 1981 and she didn't have a record deal at the time. It became a kind of viral hit in the UK after a DJ (John Peel) started playing it on the UK's biggest radio station. She was literally selling her own records from home when a UK record chain called her and said we'd like 40,000 this week and another 40,000 next week. She ended up signing a distribution deal with Warner records to fulfill the orders and it ended up reaching number 2 in the UK chart.
Btw, there is no radio edit. The full 8 minute version was played on UK radio.

Laurie Anderson is a bona fide genius. O Superman (for Massenet) to give it its full title, is one of the greatest and yet least likely pop hits ever. To take music and boil it down to its simplest form, to do only what is absolutely necessary and to create something so original and compelling that its like had never been heard before nor has it been heard since. Anderson is truly unmatched.

I am so glad others see her genius. So many smart people make music that is... just painful to listen to. It may be musically brilliant (and no mistake: Anderson is a genius, by any metric) but these self-involved folks are just... painful. Anderson is next level stuff; she easily subverts so many tropes and paradigms (including effortlessly puncturing our American narcissism; I truly thought she was an American -- I didn't know the UK side of things!) and yet is still mostly pleasant to listen to. It's similar to how some other geniuses (genii? or do they live in bottles?) are unappreciated because of their banal (Rush) or insane-looking (Danny Elfman) demeanor. Laurie Anderson is next-level stuff. Even if you don't like it, you gotta give her that.

This has an 80s feel for a good reason.
It is an 80s song and video. (1981)
There was no shortened version, either.
    This is the 7" single.
(8 minutes and 21 seconds in it's entirety.)
I had the record back in the day. 😊

When I was a kid, I shared a bedroom with my older brother. On Sunday nights, I would listen to Dr. Demento on my Radio Shack walkman, holding my pillow over my face so that my laughter wouldn't wake him up. On one of those nights in 1981, the good doctor played O Superman. I laid in my bed, terrified and transfixed, silent, paralyzed, fascinated. I fell in love with Laurie Anderson that night, without knowing anything about her. I've seen her in concert 4 times, taking my daughter to see her Transitory Life performance in 2011. She is a genius - a hilarious, poignant, brilliant, beautiful artist and human.

This piece is art. Like a musical canvas, it's all these ideas and ironic things being thrown on a "canvas" like paint. You can either take it all in, or try to define it, but there is no one definition for O Superman. It's a collage of ideas all thrown together in an 8 minute thought process.

'O Superman' is a performance, not really just a song. Laurie Anderson wrote the lyrics, composed and executed the music and performed the performance.

It's a Cold War era song from 1981 about end stage capitalism vs. communism. "The Hand That Takes" is a reference to capitalism. The song was written after Laurie Anderson was inspired by the Iranian hostage crisis and the U.S.'s military presence around the world.

This is real 80's stuff, of course. (At least, "smoking or non-smoking" should've given that away.) And possibly the most unlikely song to hit the singles charts ever.

As the others have alluded, she’s a performance artist. To take this piece as a song out of the context of an entire performance is a little misleading, it’s like judging a Tool song from one of Danny’s fills. I’ve seen her several times and an entire 90 min performance is breathtaking. There’s a complete video of her film Home of the Brave on UA-cam that gives you the best idea of an entire performance. She definitely takes a bit of open mindedness but once you allow yourself just to experience her work, you’ll be transported.

So, this is more of a guess the year of origin than an actual reaction to a work of art? Fair enough. That must be very interesting for those who don't know the song and coincidentally end up here and refuse to spend the five seconds it takes to google it.

For music, Laurie has a lot to offer a new listener. Check out a more recent track Only an Expert and you get a much more industrial sound with a techno beat. Her biggest splash came mud 80s with the concert film Home of the Brave which features guitarist Adrian Belew (King Crimson) and an amazing band of musical freaks.

I saw Laurie Anderson in concert doing Oh Superman, and I have to admit it was designed to be a concert experience. Tool Fan, god bless you but you just don't get it. It's OK dude. BTW: "the hand that takes" is death. Her mom calls just before that, and after Laurie yearns for her mom's arms. Not Big science.
