Whether it was intentional or not, Fabio “playing dumb” ended up being an amazing strategy. You can see people emulating his game in later seasons. I guess you could say Fabio is a pioneer of the game.
Fabio and Bob are interesting winners to me. They're winners outside the typical age bracket for winners(around 29-40), weren't taken seriously by their fellow castaways, and won immunities to get to the end. Funny how they're winners in two of the messiest seasons.
The more I look at Fabio’s gameplay, the more impressed I really am. He actually has somewhat of a good read for a younger player especially on Brenda, Chase, Alina, NaOnka, and even Shannon who was his ally. Him playing stupid for so long really got him a $1 million dollars.
100 percent. The fact they all didn’t vote him out over Benry is hilarious… Jane, Chase, Holly and Sash would’ve coasted if Benry stayed, he’s basically just a dumber version of Fabio imo
@@andrewcartier7748 I wouldn’t say dumber version, Fabio just understood the role he had to play in order to go far, even though he was on the bottom. He won immunities when he had no choice but to and he knew had to play cool and stupid. Benry was a little more trigger happy to play hard which the rest knew.
Most people consider Nicaragua to be a Bottom Tier Season, but Fabio singlehandedly saved the season and made it worth watching for me. He's one of my all time favorite winners, and I definitely would have hated the season if Chase had won instead.
He saved it from being a bottom five type season. Editors deserve a lot of credit for taking a cast where from the merge on there were maybe two or three people who were not some sort of villain that would be a very hard sell for the audience to get behind winning and craft a narrative where Fabio earned it. Still a below average season because really few if any people should have been cast on the show in retrospect, but could have been far worse.
Fabio would’ve done great on Winners at War. I see him getting to the final 6 without needing Edge of Extinction and he could connect well with players like Tony Sarah and Ben who were part of the big alliance that season
I still really wish that there was a world where Fabio actually was an okay chess player to the extent that he could strike up a conversation and accidently end up calling Martys bluff.
I feel like you can tell a lot about someone's appreciation of the game by how much they understand and appreciate what Fabio actually did here. He really showcased how someone can use their social skills and their ability to read others to play an effective lone wolf strategy, and it's a shame he's never been brought back.
Fabio explained his whole strategy in episode 1. He played up the part of being the fun goofball so they'd underestimate him and keep him around. It worked. Did he get really lucky? Oh undeniably, but he had a strategy even if it didn't allow him to control the game.
I really like people who manage to make it to the end and win without their alliance in the final 2/3 with them like Fabio, but people look down on such winners
Well yeah they got lucky a challenge favored then, had the FIC been something endurance based instead of focus based would Fabio have won? I don’t think good winners should have that question mark
@@XanderMatthews-nv9zfI don't think it's a question mark, imo as long as you win you played the game correctly who cares how they did it. Lying and cheating are all valid why isn't being good at challenges and being a nice guy not also worthwhile? Imo I'd rather support winners who seem like people just doing them in order to win, it's much more real to me
On an unrelated note, what the producers did to Kelly Shinn was one of the most heartless things I have ever seen. They had her out there wearing not much besides a bikini and a sun dress thinking she'd be out early. Turns out she was considered a good social player among the others who played with her. She, like Fabio, found herself in a stronger position of power after the tribe swap.
The way they railed into her for quitting on Day 28 after being sick the entire time is even more laughable now that Survivor is only 26 days, meaning they literally lampooned her for lasting LONGER on the island than anyone in the new era.
Liked Fabio as a winner then, and even more now. Anyone else notice he was pretty good at puzzles? Not just a physical threat. He seemed to be a genuine nice person too. If they ever do old school vs. new era, they ought to have old schoolers be the past champions snubbed from WAW (Fabio, Todd, Jenna M., etc.), as the best excuse to get this guy out there again.
To me Fabio is my absolute favorite winner cause when you look at Survivor winner list, his type is always never makes it to the end cause they’re super athletic and popular -joe/ Malcom- the fact that he actually survived the votes and won the game against two great great strategists is a huge win for fans especially considering the ers he was playing in which was dominated by villains and cutthroat players. Nat from Samoa was a retrospective popular winner cause it took time for people to cool off on her but he was just a breath of fresh air in a dark dark time. Absolutely one of my favorites! Thank u Nonka for your reconciliation for all the hard time u gave him. it was worth it!
There is a Fabio moment that you definitely didn't include (don't know if intentional or not, but I find the moment hilarious): NaOnka: Fabio, I don't like you. Jeff: Fabio, she don't like you.
Without Fabio, this season could have been super bleak and dark. Only a couple quirky people on the season, most who were voted out early, and then you have a lot of shady personalities that are not presented as much more than that. Fabio was a light/goofy presence the season very much needed
To be honest, I thought I wasn’t going to like Fabio after seeing him in the first four episodes. However, as the season went on, I really began to like his story and seeing him win at the end was satisfying. Not a top tier winner for me but definitely 21-30 in my ranking.
My #1 winner, Judson "Fabio" Birza. What a legend in my heart even if he's a "low tier" winner. He did what he needed to do and it worked! A game-changer surfer bro playing dumb and calm. What a messy season, what a winner in Fabio.
The only surprising part about Fabio's win to me was that is was a narrow 5-4 win; that season really did have a lot of curmudgeons and people who would knock Fabio for just being a good dude.
I love Fabio and he played the fool to the tee and he fooled his fellow castaways His confessionals showed his intelligence and his under the radar approach
Fabio was the second person I managed to choose as winner successfully, and I'm so glad he won. It wasn't a strategic choice, he's just so fun to like.
Nicaragua and Fabio are my guilty pleasures of Survivor. This was my first full season of survivor i saw live, and 10 year old me took one look at Fabio and wanted him to win. So you can imagine my joy when it came true. Still to this day enjoy both more than a most fans
I loved the bond Fabio had with Marty, definitely not one I expected given his initial stance on having older tribe members. Also Chase not being for the boys lost him a million.
Interesting tidbit. Hayden Moss, Winner of BB12 & castaway on SURVIVOR BLOOD VS WATER told Sharon Tharp, he audition for this season. He was almost close in getting casted but they Fabio. So they definitely were looking for a type.
It’s so frustrating that Naonka made a good move and then quits immediately after. i understand her reasoning after hearing a podcast episode with her but it would’ve been so fun seeing how it played out after she took out Brenda
Despite the reputation this season has Fabio was without a doubt one of the few brights spots in a dull and uninteresting season. Just him being goofy and fun for most of the game and then stepping it up to stop the majority alliance from steamrolling the game was absolutely satisfying. As far as Winners At War goes I would much rather have him, Earl, Richard Hatch, Chris D literally anybody memorable or rootable compete instead of winners like Ben or Nick in my personal opinion.
I need to let you know that the first podcast I ever listened to you do was right after “aiya playing with the boy” was on season 45 and really, I feel so bonded with you and like I’m part of the funniest inside joke with you.
Fabio is one of my favorite winners of all time. I love that he basically vibed his way to the million dollars. I really wish he had been cast on Winners at War. I'd love to see him interact with other winners like Sandra and Tony.
I might be insane but I consider Nicaragua a Top 20 season, or, in my personal favorites at least. I view it in the same way as Gabon, a total mess and just full of characters. Though it's nowhere close to Gabon's entertainingly humorous trainwreck I still love it for what it is. Only thing I don't like is the double quit. Also, we're at the halfway mark of story video and up next is the Robfather, a.k.a., the Mentalist.
