This is on of those songs where all the instruments are going crazy. The guitar riff and solo is great. The drumming is constant and wow throughout. But ... this is one of those songs that makes me wish I knew how to play the keyboards. If you like some violin in your rock music, try Kansas's "Dust In the Wind" ... its beautiful.
I know this song from the TV series Supernatural. So if she's ever seen that, that is probably why she thinks it's from a movie . It's one of Dean's favorite songs.
The next song of theirs you guys should check out is "Dust In The Wind". It's probably their most popular song but it's an absolutely beautiful composition, you've got to hear it.
Welcome to Kansas. So many more good songs to check out by them. This song was thrown on the album at the last minute and made them a household name, but there are so many great songs in their catalog of music.
Kansas is a very underrated band... Formed & rose to prominence in the 70's, Kansas has kept recording and touring w/ their brand of progressive rock music until today w/ a changing line-up for decades... Current Deep Purple guitarist Steve Morse was once a member of Kansas. They are known to craft music w/ complex arrangements like Rush, Yes, Dream Theater, and Tool. The band was formed by Phil Ehart (drums) and debuted in 1974 w/ Rich Williams (guitar)... Steve Walsh (vocals & keyboards) did this 1976 record 'Leftoverture' w/ Kerry Livgren (guitar/ piano/ synthesizers), Robby Steinhardt (violin/ viola) & Dave Hope (bass) ...This line-up also recorded the other big Kansas single 'Dust in the wind' (from the 1977 album 'Point of know return') Kansas has released 16 studio albums since 1974 ...their latest records being 'The prelude implicit' (2016) and 'The absence of presence' (2020)... The current Kansas line-up: Phil Ehart (drums), Rich Williams (guitar), Ronnie Platt (lead vocals), Billy Greer (bass & vocals), Tom Brislin (keyboards & vocals), and David Ragsdale (violin/ guitar)
And..... They sounded just like this live.. I got to see the original Kansas ... The very last show they did, until the reunion thing. Incredible doesn't begin to describe it!
Towards the end of recording this album, they realized they needed one more track. Kerry Livgren, lead guitarist and songwriter, went back to his room and knocked this masterpiece out...in one freakin' night! He came to the studio the next morning and asked the band: "What do you think?" Needless to say, the band rather liked it, lol.
"Kansas" is one of the best Prog Rock bands of the '70s, with many epic songs. It's one of those bands that you need to pull up the lyrics, because they're usually deep. I recommend "Song for America", "Dust in the Wind", "The Wall", "Child of Innocence", "Point of Know Return", and "Icarus (Borne on Wings of Steel)".
Idk i would put rush over them. First of all rush was great for farrrr longer, but in the 70s alone rush changed quite a bit while kansas kinda stayed the same.

This was one of my favorite songs when it came out in the 70's. Other great Kansas songs are "Song For America", "Journey From Mariabronn" , "The Wall", And "Dust In The Wind"
What you just got your first taste of progressive rock. You were saying earlier about how the song "transitions" so quickly, is exactly what progressive rock does. It progresses. That is the beauty of the genre. Kansas is my favorite band, and their singer, Steve Walsh, is one of the greatest of all time in rock and roll. There is a reason they are *the only* American prog band that come to mind. They made prog a thing in the Americas, and there has never been a band nearly as impactful and famous as them over here. Their lyrics are the best and most impactful out of any band I've ever heard, and you have Kerry Livgren to thank for that. They are just so deep and emotionally intellectual. I can't describe how happy I am that you guys reacted to Kansas. If you guys want to hear more of Steve's vocal prowess, I recommend songs like Journey From Mariabronn, Belexes, and Dust In The Wind and if you want to hear more of the band's sound, I recommend Song For America, The Wall, and Apercu. You HAVE to listen to Apercu. It's a masterpiece in musicianship. You don't wanna miss it. Don't let Carry On Wayward Son let you have a false idea of what this band sounds like though. They actually use the violin in 95% of their songs, which is what garnered them that unique sound that set them apart from the rest. it's a crime they aren't a part of the R&R HOF, but they are one of the best prog bands for a reason. They still tour and I'm seeing them on Saturday. Propelled by six country bumpkins from the middle-of-nowhere Kansas, they made themselves who they are.
Great song. I love to watch the official video for this song. It gives a better appreciation of the musician's talents. The lead singer was playing multiple instruments as well as singing. It's Classic and Timeless!!
Saw them in concert with heart. They had 4 or five classical musicians come out in front of the curtain and start playing, I was right up front and was getting disappointed when the oboe Basson player stood up and went 1234 and slammed his instrument on the ground with a loud explosion coming out of it and the curtain dropped and they sang this song! Blew me away
love this song!this is THEE song of show supernatural.usually used to do the previously bit at the beginnging.they fight evil every week which is mentally, emotionally and physically tireing.so the song says carry on my wayward son they'll be peace when you are done.rest your weary head don't you cry no more.
Back in the early 70s we had a band show up in our small town in Ellinwood Kansas at the opera house bar on Main Street called White clover and we thought they were the greatest band we’ve ever heard little did we know that this band would become Kansas and here I am 50 years later i’m listening to Kansas on this video and enjoying their music just like I did in my home town of Elmwood
I was 11 years old when this song came out! This song played on the radio , on our way to many beach trips!!! Myself , my older brother, and older sister in the car would be banging our heads to this!! Good memories!! Miss that yellow and brown station wagon and the memories!! Dust in the wind was also good! Deep meaning on that song!! This song was used on Supernatural a television show as well!
I was 14 when your mother was born....watching you two react to the music I grew up with is amazing and to think of all of the music you're missing. You should listen to "What's On My Mind" by Kansas. I think you'd really like it.
I live in Topeka Kansas just a few miles away from the tiny house that the band Kansas lived in during their early days. Steve Walsh who was the lead singer slept in a closet! There are two original members that still tour to this day. Dust in the wind and Point of know return are two other great songs that you need to check out.
Kansas is on another level of uniqueness and creativity. I’ve been listening to them for ages and still sounds incredible for me. Additionally, bands from 70s usually tells a story and I’m really into it. ❤
One of my faves by them was the combo of "The Spider", into "Portrait" off of the "Point of Know Return" album. Anyone who hasn't heard it is missing out on one of their classics.
This song was actually the theme song from a 1976 movie called Heroes and in the movie Henry Winkler was a Vietnam veteran that returned and was looking throughout the movie for his friend that he served with.
Kansas has a Very Deep Catalogue, So many masterpieces, UNPARALLELED Lyrics, Master Level Musicianship, Epic Level Story Telling, the Best of The Best. When You get through all of the classics, Check Out the Album, "In the Spirit of Things", a hidden gem in their Catalogue.

Loving having the day off from work for Presidents Day . I got to jump in and watch early , like I did thru the holidays being off . Can’t wait for summer to be able to jump on every morning and have my coffee with y’all . KEEP ROCKIN
Was 13 sitting in my room on a Friday with a cassetteplayer/recorder to hope for some good new songs to record... that same day i catched first Heart - Barracuda.... then suddenly: Carry on my wayward son .............. dont you cry no more... do-do do-do-dah! *Ex-fukken-plosion* That was 45 years ago and still i keep this song as one of the best ever. Chrystal clear sound, varied, groovy, catchy, raw riffin
Where I went to high school in Maine the senior class picks a song this was the song that the class of 1977 picked this song Glad you found this band the song has so much meaning for me lots of good memories lots of buzz loops lol this band was amazing a sound like no other sound by combining instruments that you usually don't hear in rock music they are definitely a band that you want to go down the rabbit hole check out (the wall )check out point of no return, dust in the wind, what's on my mind, what I love is when I see you younger generation digging our music that we probably take for granted because we heard it so much but you guys help us old guys hear it fresh and new again thanks For your reaction keep spreading the music around God-bless.
A religious song example their will be peace on earth when you are done...that's what jesus does when he returns if you listen to the song in this aspect you will see a whole new meaning to the song.
Check out Portrait (He Knew) from Kansas, it's track 3 on their Point of no return album. I would also suggest you check out The Alan Parsons Project. I Wouldn't Want to Be Like You, and Breakdown would be a good place to start
👁 "Dust in the Wind" was written after the guitarist Kerry Livgren read a book of old Native American poems. He said they reminded him of the Bible verse "from dust you were made and to dust you shall return" (don't remember the exact verse). A "you can't take it with you" song. VERY beautiful!! Please do the official video.
This is my jam 😂 It meant something to me when coming up. I was pretty sad and needed a lift. Even pass religious feelings. Its a song you can just feel powerful and new and reflective which I appreciate. Plus those guitars and drums and all that. Just beautiful
Lonely Wind,Distant Vision but The Coming Dawn will speak volumes to you.THe WALL ? A masterpiece with so many others.Kerry was a genius lyrically on a quest for truth he found in 1980.His words reflect it.
Everyone jumping on the Wayward Son bandwagon. Why not listen to "Sparks of Tempest." Music is just as heavy but lyrics even heavier. The theme is about people aimlessly voting without question and much more. Love the way the vocals switch from singer to singer. LISTEN DAMNIT!!
So my friend bought this Huge stereo system. It was freaking awesome. This was one of the 1st albums he played on it. Like I've said before sweet memories and a little sad. If you can keep your friends close. Glad to see you guys appreciating music 🎶 memories
Back in the day when this was hot for some reason Kansas NEVER played in Nebraska. I lived there so a buddy and I had to go to Red Rocks (Colorado/God's Cathedral). Very well worth the trip and a nice ride on a couple of Harleys with our girls. I've seen them since then with the new band members in Reno (Harrah's outdoor venue) Still killin' it. I still have this LP./Album. "Point of Know Return" and "Dust in the Wind" are two other big songs from that era 45 years ago. They're still played on the radio.
Kansas had so many great songs they had some radio hits, but much better songs that wasn't radio airplay. First 5 albums all great. Next 2 or 3 were pretty good.
Awesome live shows, saw these guys twice back in the late 70's. All their earlier stuff from the mid 70's to early 80's is / was pure gold. There out on tour right now. I'll be going to see them again in April (St joseph, mo or springfield, mo) or maybe in manhattan, ks in may, we haven't decided yet, still trying to work out the details of getting time off work to make a reasonably short road trip.
If you haven't reacted to Ayreon yet, you should check out The Day that the World Breaks Down. It's something like 14 minutes long and has 11 different lead singers. And the mastermind behind the project, Arjen Lucasson, shares a lot of information through the video. He also plays all the guitars and bass parts and most of the keyboards. You'll see him in the video too. Think you'll like it.
My father passed when I was 9. The lyrics always felt like he was speaking to me. One of my favorites...
Sorry to hear that. I'm glad you can find some solace in a great song like this one. I believe that somewhere he's rocking right along your side.
My mom died when I was two. I know that pain in childhood. Peace as you " carry on."
same here dude , this song always brings tears to my eyes
Sending you all ♥️ & 🙏🙏!
The power of music, eh? God bless...

And The Coming Dawn and Lonely Wind.Distant Vision,so many.

Loving having the day off from work for Presidents Day . I got to jump in and watch early , like I did thru the holidays being off . Can’t wait for summer to be able to jump on every morning and have my coffee with y’all . KEEP ROCKIN
"Point of Know Return" and "Dust In The Wind"
Supernatural 👍👍👍✊
Great reaction as always! "Dust in the Wind" is another smokin' tune as well.
Dave Hope (bassist)was a youth minister in Destin Florida where I live. 1995ish. He told wild stories
I remember listening to this while I was playing around on the flight deck of USS Nimitz. First year of four years.
Very blessed. Youngster. Enjoy
should check out Supertramp "The Logical Song" Audio only
Where I went to high school in Maine the senior class picks a song this was the song that the class of 1977 picked this song Glad you found this band the song has so much meaning for me lots of good memories lots of buzz loops lol this band was amazing a sound like no other sound by combining instruments that you usually don't hear in rock music they are definitely a band that you want to go down the rabbit hole check out (the wall )check out point of no return, dust in the wind, what's on my mind, what I love is when I see you younger generation digging our music that we probably take for granted because we heard it so much but you guys help us old guys hear it fresh and new again thanks For your reaction keep spreading the music around God-bless.
A religious song example their will be peace on earth when you are done...that's what jesus does when he returns if you listen to the song in this aspect you will see a whole new meaning to the song.
This song is fire and Dust in the wind.
Great song...check out their: "Play the Game Tonight", "Perfect Lover", "Hold On", and "Point of Know Return".
Dust in the Wind and Point of No Return are must listens.
This is my jam 😂
It meant something to me when coming up. I was pretty sad and needed a lift. Even pass religious feelings. Its a song you can just feel powerful and new and reflective which I appreciate. Plus those guitars and drums and all that. Just beautiful
76’ year my mom was born made me feel old!! Lol… keep up the good work!! Love yalls reactions
Guitar hero feelings
I was also born in 1976 in August
My favourite Kansas song is "Dust in the Wind"
The Wall, Miracles out of nowhere.
Dust in the wind is a banger too. Kansas has many hits.
Back in the day when this was hot for some reason Kansas NEVER played in Nebraska. I lived there so a buddy and I had to go to
Red Rocks (Colorado/God's Cathedral).
I can't think of anything but the show Supernatural when hearing this.
Speaking of transitioning, you should check out video and see how the singer transitions from bongos and the one handed keyboard solo, awesome.
Yes! You nailed it! The transitions in the song are everything 🙂
A lot of the lyrics in this song were inspired by stuff in the Bible, this was a very heavy song about reflecting on life when it came out
If you haven't reacted to Ayreon yet, you should check out The Day that the World Breaks Down. It's something like 14 minutes long and has 11 different lead singers. And the mastermind behind the project, Arjen Lucasson, shares a lot of information through the video. He also plays all the guitars and bass parts and most of the keyboards. You'll see him in the video too. Think you'll like it.
