That's not the irony, the irony is that Gu Jia warned him and told him not to have those blue fireworks because it was the cause of their friends downfall and that he needed to think about the family's future but instead he listens to the mistress's words that Gu Jia was only trying to control him and that she was trying to stifle his creativity. Actually, he always want blue firework and only his mistress support him. He didn't brought the blue firework for her but himself and his wife rejected (for a good reason). The cheating was only part of divorce but the blue firework is main reason she decided He isn't the same person she married.

When he went to Beijing and suddenly get carried away by that mistress he made some adjustment and created " U U" symbol for her. "U U" is short cut for You You. That is what make his wife sad. Wife also sad because her husband has feelings to that mistress.
