it was Jeff Goldblum's idea that Ian Malcolm would lead the T-Rex away and play the hero.. In the original novel by Michael Chrichton, Malcolm runs away like a coward :)
Too bad a real Rexy wouldn't sound like this because it is one of the coolest sound effects ever created, ranks right up there with the Pulse Rifles in Aliens IMO. Although the actual sound they claim it would have made is pretty scary in its own way.
Ill still never forget everyones reaction when the rex came theough the fence, i remember my dad clearly saying "holy shit look at that!" My mom gasped and put her hands over her mouth. Im so stoked i got to be there to see this kind of production be born...you will never get reactions like that anymore...truly a wonderful time to be alive
27 years...damn...and it still looks like this, this movie is going down to history, coming generations need to know about this movie and we shall make it possible, we need to show this movie to our kids and teach them.
I was also 10 and it instantly became my favorite movie. This scene with the T Rex blew me away. It's so realistic and intense. My all time favorite movie.
Michael Crichton said that the sound the Rex made at 6:08 was EXACTLY what he heard in his head when he wrote the novel - high-pitched and “from another world.”
He’d probably super excited watching the film, although many terrifying and gory parts were removed from the book. Plus the characters were a bit more family friendly
When you realize that the only reason the rex in the movie can only see movement is because thats how frogs are in real life and the rex has frog dna and if it was a pure Rex they would have died.
@Chris Murphy the dinosaurs on Jurassic Park were made from amphibian lifeforms to fill in the DNA gaps. Its not that hard to understand if you have a brain
No cause think, at the start of the movie alan grant said "u might think to stay still cause u think their vision is based on movement, like the tyrannosaurus" to the kid, before he knew anything bout the park. So that shows that its just the movie saying trexs cant see you if u stay still and nothing to do with the frogs
A lot less was known about Rexes back then. Hell when I was a kid they walked more upright and their tales dragged the ground in all of the drawings and even with the skeletons in the museums. My in head answer is that it was a dark moonless night with pouring rain and that I wouldn't just have a hard time seeing a mouse under those conditions I'd step on the damn thing and not realize I had done it probably.
She was younger and even more of an idiot in the book. In the movie they beefed up her character a little by turning her into a computer prodigy. At that age I'm not sure I would have be too bright in the face of 15 ton eating machine either.
Agreed, Lex is completely insufferable in the book, and she has zero redeeming qualities. All she does is whine about how bored & hungry she is the whole time. They switched some of Tim's characteristics from the book over to Lex in the movie (computer savvy, older sibling, etc.), which was a good change imho.
I remember when I was a little girl and seeing this for the first time when this came out (at the age of 5), I was so freaked out with the T-Rex. Now, this is my favorite part of the movie where we get to finally see Rexy!

I was 7. I just thought it was the coolest thing ever! The only part that kinda freaked me out a little though, was when the dilophosauras unfolded it's hood really fast. It was just the shock factor of it. My favorite scene though, is the kitchen scene. When the kids are trying to hide from the raptors.
I love that shot of the water. My mom said when she took my oldest brother to see this in theaters, she began to freak out when that happened. Love it.
This still looks OUTRAGEOUSLY great and real almost 30 years later.. Why? It's the interchange between the real life prop dinosaur they built and the cgi dinosaur. 4:32... Look how amazingly tangible and grounded that looks.. That's because that is a real animatronic dinosaur. Then it switches to a cgi Dino at 4:39 when the dinosaur needs to do movements the animatronic dinosaur can't. By interchanging the real life prop Dino and the cgi Dino our mind is tricked into assigning the tangibility and realism of the prop Dino to the cgi Dino once the switch is made. It's genius. The rain and nightfall have a big role in masking the limitations of 1992 cgi. It really is remarkable, shot in 1992 and it holds up and is even arguably better than stuff we get today.
Man that scene when the T-Rex first walks out.. may be the best CGI shot of all time.. never have I seen a shot where the presence of a fully digital creature seemed so visceral and so real
Muldoom seeing in the mirror T-Rex coming towards car and mirror says "Objects in the mirror are closer than they appear" what a direction! Speilberg is a genius
4:40 I Think this is the most convincingly and naturally animated movement of an animal that fits perfectly to its weight. Amazing work from 30 years ago!
Your words are EXACTLY how I feel. I just love reading comments of other people that had the same experience I had. I saw this in the theater at ten years old and was blown away. This scene did it for me.
We now know that T-rexes probably couldn't roar like in the movie, much less that its vision is based on movement, but I love that at 3:09 it uses that super loud roar to make the kids flinch into moving so it can confirm their location.
I was just looking at that thinking......hang on a sec that should have broken both their arms and legs. One of those things that makes you go hmmmmmm.
Imagine in the future instead of prison they put you in a time machine and send you back to when the dinosaurs lived and you have to survive there for as long as your punishment is.

Vividly remember being in absolute awe when seeing this in the cinema the first time. It was genuinely terrifying when we first seen T Rex. It was so unbelievably real looking that people were honestly in fear. 😂😂😂
I was in the theater the first week this came out in 93 and I've lost count of the number of times I've watched the whole thing and just these scenes. And I still find new things to see and ponder. It's a great piece of filmmaking and it still holds up with time even with all of it's inconsistencies and continuity issues. And while I enjoyed Jurassic World and Fallen Kingdom a great deal they aren't on the same level as this especially Fallen Kingdom (Jurassic World comes a lot closer and is probably at least as good as The Lost World was). The less we say about the third movie the better IMO.
First movie I ever watched in a cinema. I was 4 years old. I think I was like... 😱. Fairly certain I thought it was all real until my mum told me otherwise once the film was over.
Anyone have the pleasure of being 5 years old in 1995, with the crazy dad that took you to see this? 🙋♂️. I know alot of kids these days didnt get to experience the very first realistic looking, most awesome dinosaurs ever to hit the big screen. As a kid, and even to adults, we all thought Rex was going to walk out of the screen durring the paddock escape.
What got me so mad is that she didn’t try to pull the light away and hide the light if they couldn’t turn it off Edit: I know she was terrified but she kept pointing the light at the t-Rex
Sorry, but she was extremely stupid. I am much younger than both of them and I saw this film when I was about 5-6. Even so young, I thought she was incredibly stupid for pulling out a flashlight in the first place. Honestly, what was she thinking?

2:58 T-Rex’s pupil dilates when the light shines in its eye. Pretty cool attention to detail. This whole scene is still terrifying. The absence of a sound track was a genius move.
I cannot begin to say how many nightmares I had of this scenario when I was a kid. I mean the whole movie always gave me new nightmares and ways the dinosaurs escape and always ALWAYS find me no matter how well I hide. Frickin Rex.
lol, I loved dinosaurs back then. Adored them so much that I had the 3 raptor wallpaper. Freaken had a nightmare about the 3 raptors trying to get me while I was hiding behind a thin wall. Noticed that I was sweating profusely when I woke up.
Massively into dinosaurs when i was a kid. Felt like this movie was made for me and i was lucky enough to see it in the cinema. Absolutely mind-blowing at the time.

IKR! The roar at 3:09 is UNREAL

A hippo totally agree with you I heard that the T-Rex had extremely high vision.
No way wow I didn’t know that
@Chris Murphy the dinosaurs on Jurassic Park were made from amphibian lifeforms to fill in the DNA gaps.
When you realize the T-Rex in this movie was only a teenager.

TBH I can't differentiate which one is CGI or animatronic even till now.
Man that scene when the T-Rex first walks out.. may be the best CGI shot of all time.. never have I seen a shot where the presence of a fully digital creature seemed so visceral and so real

I was 10 and fell in love with this movie and this scene. It was absolutely incredible.
T.Rex so good performed in this movie
I was in the theater the first week this came out in 93 and I've lost count of the number of times I've watched the whole thing and just these scenes. And I still find new things to see and ponder. It's a great piece of filmmaking and it still holds up with time even with all of it's inconsistencies and continuity issues. And while I enjoyed Jurassic World and Fallen Kingdom a great deal they aren't on the same level as this especially Fallen Kingdom (Jurassic World comes a lot closer and is probably at least as good as The Lost World was). The less we say about the third movie the better IMO.
What makes Jurassic World good is that the T.rex is the same one from the first Jurassic Park, and it just brings that glorifying sense of nostalgia.
