    Hi I’m A Marciano. I just found your channel, I think it’s great! My father in law was born in Palermo, but is currently in the US, in PA. Before I end up writing a novel, I wanted to say that I am really trying to work out a plan to leave the US and take up residency there- somewhere in Sicily. We have much to consider though… kids (17 & 20), pets, work… it’s a lot. We are not yet at retirement age, and cannot do anything without a plan. I am sure I will take in all of your videos and reach out with many questions:)

    Lots of fun! I am soon to join you but I will be in Umbria. I think your attitude is fantastic. My channel is still in its infancy, mostly just some practice shorts and photo montages. I have 2 1/2 years until I go permanently. I am focusing on language mostly, then the drivers test probably six months before departure. I like your language skills. I feel it really is so important. Thanks Brian 😎 I don’t think you will regret your choice. My Italian isn’t all that great - però stò imperando! And we think it’s really important to learn, too. We know lots of English speakers and we can get help with the bureaucracy, but it’s a really a matter of respect. What makes things a little more complicated here is that people really speak Sicilian, not so much Italian, and it is quite a bit different. So we’ve got that going for us 😝 Good luck with everything. -Brian

      @@beeseurotravel Beth and Brian, good morning. Great to hear from you. There are too many negative folk on social media.I lived in a French hamlet with 40 other souls. One of the neighbours had a pet 'sanglier' which he walked through the hamlet on a lead. Other neighbours, who had a flock of goats and made goat's cheese, had a fireplace in the kitchen you could sit in. The husband sported a mustache birds could perch on. It was pure Marcel Pagnol 😂. Right now I'm in Thailand, which is wonderful, but I do miss the architectural wonder of the Med. I can apply for the elective visa in Bangkok but need to sort out driving as I cannot exchange a Thai licence for an Italian one and my UK licence has expired. As the Spanish say, arriba! It's 33 degrees in Bangkok and my view of the Temple of the Dawn is enchanting. Have a great weekend.

      Hi and thanks for watching. Our experience here has been as retirees so I can’t really speak to how it might be as a young family. But with that said it is a completely different life here. Things you have come to take for granted like: efficient administration and online access to nearly everything are in short supply here. It can be very frustrating and you have to have a ton of patience. On the flip side daily life with friends, neighbors and small businesses are incredibly fulfilling. Food is inexpensive, fresh and healthy and there is no shortage of things to do everywhere on the island. For us it was a great move.

    First off it is evident to us watchers that you guys are a great team. You work so well with each other and are a joy to watch. Always enjoy watching you and your musings. I too hope to live in Sicily at some point after I retire from my engineering job which is coming soon. I do want to ask a question and I reckon it can be awkward. I'm a black American and wonder how life would be for someone like me if I were to move there. Obviously you aren't black so you can share with me what you found from your own experience, but I thought I would ask it anyway. As in any place/ country racism is a fact of life. I don't think there is a country on earth that claims all of its citizens are free from prejudice though I suppose some places are better than others. Regardless of one's looks everyone feels important to be welcomed and accepted by their neighbors. Maybe the answer is I will have to move there and see for myself. I love Italy. I don't know why. Its art, history, civilization, food, geography, climate and list goes on. If you have any comments about this topic sure appreciate hearing them. How diverse is it anyway? Cheers and thanks for doing this.

    • @beeseurotravel
      @beeseurotravel  10 днів тому

      Hi Daniel. Yeah, racism sucks and it exists here, too. I’ll do my best for you. On the positive side, Sicily has a long tradition of mixed cultures/races and it is diverse here. I do know that the eastern side of the island is considered to be more Greek, whereas the the western side is more Arabic. On the negative side most of the “black” people in SE Sicily are immigrants from North Africa and I don’t get the feeling that they’re all that appreciated. But I’m not sure if it’s because of their skin color, religion, economic status, etc. I have only hung out with two black people here. One was at a party we went to last summer. Cool guy , but was having a hard time finding work. He is married to a Sicilian woman and they have two kids. He didn’t talk at all about racism. Another guy we met lives in Siracusa. He did talk about racism and it was a problem for him even though he is an Italian citizen and went to university in Rome. Although I can’t be 💯 sure, I do know that a good attitude goes a long way here. If you’re trying to integrate, learn some Italian, be helpful it’s well-received. In France there was racism, too, but it had very little to do with skin color and it was mostly about a “perceived” unwillingness to integrate (I have lots more experience there). I’d have to imagine it would be similar here but I can’t be completely sure. I would say in the countryside it would be harder for you. Even here our neighbors think we are a bit crazy. I do most of the cooking and Beth is often out doing yard work. Neither fits well with their traditional way of life/thinking. Though we don’t feel judged, Beth gets lots of long, confused looks and waves when the tractors go by 🤣 Hopefully that helps a little bit, but you’re definitely right: it’d probably be best for you to come here and spend some time first. Best of luck with everything and thanks for watching the videos. It makes us happy that you like them.

      @@beeseurotravel Thanks for such a helpful replay, Brian. I realize a lot of it is a two way street. Attitude is everything, well, almost everything. I had driven into the remote parts of Montana and Idaho and had interacted with whoever I came across with much to the chagrin of my ex wife. I have met some incredibly kind and friendly people that way. Without sounding naïve people are basically people wherever you go. Like you said when folks see something different (such as Beth doing yard work or a person of a different race) they might not automatically take it in with open arms. It is simply something they aren't familiar with. So we accommodate it and roll along with it.
      I already started learning Italian on Duolingo :) Also, I'm glad I won't be looking for work! I'll have a comfortable retirement income that would allow me to live a reasonable life. I have many varied interests. Who knows, perhaps we can meet for espresso if and when I do my exploratory visit to Sicily and in your neck of the woods in the next year or two. Thanks again. • @beeseurotravel
      @beeseurotravel  8 місяців тому

      No. We gutted it out. It’s not that hard really… just a lot of busy work. The most complicated part is figuring out how much passive income you’ll have to show to meet your local embassy requirement.

      Not sure. The lifestyle is amazing, but school-wise? Just don’t have enough knowledge to give you great advice. I’ve heard/seen really good and not so good. We have a couple of friends that are teachers and they are great people. We have another friend who has her son in a Montessori school and they love it. The kids seem really, really happy so 🤷‍♂️ I’d like to believe it’s all good but I’m sure it’s very unlike American schools (Beth was a middle school teacher for 15 years 😉)

    I don’t mind that you are not always achieving things. I like watching the everyday life and your interactions with neighbours. You are not as arrogant and annoying as some Americans 😊 I don’t much like your music though. I’d rather it were less loud rock and roll and more fitting to the surroundings. That would probably make me switch off more than your content which I’m finding interesting and varied.

    Hi, if you don't mind answering our question. How did you apply to get residency? We are Americans living in Panama who want to move to Sicily, but we will need residency. Thanks in advance.

    • @beeseurotravel
      @beeseurotravel  9 місяців тому

      It all starts with your “local” embassy in the US. Whatever your showing for a US address is what will determine your embassy. Lots of paperwork which isn’t hard but you do have to show quite a bit of regular income to get the ball rolling. In Boston we had to show quite a bit more than the advertised ~$40,000 and I’m still not sure why 🤷‍♂️Beth said it has something to do with median income of the embassy region but… it’s the one question I’d get answered right at the beginning.

    • @josephharmon5542
      @josephharmon5542 9 місяців тому

      Hi, thanks for your reply. We should be o.k. as far as income goes. Did you need FBI reports to show the embassy? If you do not mind, can you tell me how much land you got with that property and approximate price. Everywhere in Italy is seems people just ask any price as there is no appraisal service that could give a real property value. Thanks and keep the videos coming we like them.@@beeseurotravel

    • @beeseurotravel
      @beeseurotravel  9 місяців тому +2

      No FBI reports for us. We got 7.5 acres and a 500 square foot 1960’s block house for less than the price of a Tesla Model X. But that’s Sicily. Tuscany would be 5x what we paid. Real estate is the Wild West here, but if you spend enough time looking online and find a good realtor you’ll be ok.

      I find it to be more raw, more real. Italians are generally very friendly but here they are exceptionally so. It’s very underdeveloped which is good and bad, but for us mostly good. The weather is exceptional. Finally, it’s very affordable here.

      A few things. For us, the weather was really important and Sicily has sunshine in spades. Also, we try to avoid touristic places and for now Sicily fits the bill perfectly. I can’t imagine us in Tuscany. It’s also very affordable here. Though we looked hard at Puglia, what we were able to get here for the money was unbeatable. Finally, the people we have met here are the friendliest we have met in ALL of Europe. Tough to beat!
