Excellent and very clear explaination. Thanks a lot Sir.
Thank you for this instructional video. It really looks like it's not too difficult, and if it works directly on a regular old Mercedes diesel engine (OM617 for W123's, mine is an OM602 as I own a W124), then this is way better rather than modifying the engine with gadgets to use raw veggie oil (new or waste).
nicely explained and very easy to follow!!!!!
Best tutorial I have seen on the subject!
God bless sir I am have learnt a lot from your videos.
youtube really wants me to make my own Biodiesel this is like the 100 th Video on how to do it now
Thanks for the info.
I just poured it very slowly out of the container until I hit the glycerin layer and then stopped.
Good suggestion for the next video I do on this though.
Thanks for the feedback.
Would work well if you had a container set up with a spigot in the bottom, that way it is easier to draw off the glycerin off without putting small amounts of it back into the solution. My other thought is maybe a filter to take out the glycerin, do not know if it can be done but I imagine there is a way, after all glycerin is in many products, from hair shampoo to body lotion they have to get it from somewhere
Very nice and helpful video. Thank you very much
Excellent! Thanks for sharing.
Just a word of caution to everybody, be careful when handling methanol near an ignition source (e.g. the burner in this video) as the vapors could ignite.
Pouring the solvent produces more fumes than you realize so pour in an area that is ventilated (outside).
Methanol may produce “invisible flames” so it may not be immediately obvious that it’s burning.
Thanks for the how to, but I would recommend including safety concerns so as to prevent people from injuring themselves.
There is a reason why so many chemists die in lab explosions...
Another note is that methanol can cause worsening vision or just flat out blindness if you drink it or if you get it on your skin, it attacks the optic nerve

#1: don't be gay like op
Amazing video
excellent
that was all i needed . thanks a lot!
Tq so much clear instructions, so much interest to make.
@XxS0LIDARITYxX You can stick it in a 2 liter pop bottle, turn it upside down and slowly drain it off or put it into any container that you can flip upside down and drain from the bottom. Works great!
good informative video
thank you very very much . . . . . . that was great!
I love Green oil.
nice this is best video on this subject..
I will try once
Excellent and logically presented 👍😎🌏🇦🇺✅
filtration can be used agro film which is used to protect plants from frost it is the cheapest filter. The film comes in 17g; 30g; For 50g / M2 thickness standards, density can be selected or a double layer can be used. It is possible to filter not only during fuel production but also before filling into the fuel tank.
Thank you
Very easy
I really thnk u sir. i cud do my chemistry investigatory project just with this video.
I am very thankfull to u.
Great video! What can you do with the removed glyceryn?
@dx80cruiser
using heet is a more expensive way of doing a minibatch or in the test phase also called a titration. If you live in a area that has auto garages who specialize in race cars you can find out from them who is a good direct source for methanol. In those cases though one is typically buying at minimum a 55G drum of methanol. 1 drum can supply enough methanol for at least 400 gallons of biodiesle. another thing not mentioned is the methanol combined with the KOH more commonly called
Very interesting project! I'm going to replicate it in my school's lab tomorrow. Let's see how it would turn out!
I noticed you didn't wet wash or dry wash your biodiesel? Is the washing only necessary if the cooking oil is used?
thank u sir give valuable information about biodiesel iam india once thank u sir
Yes. Ethyl Alcohol can be used. It's a little more difficult, but it can be done.
@UtahBiodiesel You should make another video explaining the "glycerin removal".
bolasdeferro true
+ Utah Biodiesel Supply - I agree - this was a great video but the whole thing becomes pointless without knowing how to remove the glycerin. I'm a soapmaker so I assume that the glycerin forms because there's some form of saponification going on when you mix the lye and the oil, the glycerin being the byproduct of saponification, and the alcohol makes it a longer chain molecule. But even knowing a bit of the chemistry behind what you've done here, I still don't have the foggiest idea how to remove the glycerin. It would also be helpful to know what to do with the glycerin once removed - given the toxic nature of methyl alcohol is there anythng that can be done wen it or does it get disposed of with hazardous waste? Thx.
Mony's cell only thing I can think of is nitroglycerin
@@monyscell8352 A sep funnel works. Or you could just decant the fuel.
Or just syphon the top part (bio diesel) off into another container.
Really nice info and recipe but what precautions we have to take for methanol as it is flammable liquid so is it safe to prepare at home ??
@dx80cruiser It's involved mainly because we're chemically altering the oil into something thinner. Not simply diluting it. The chemical process is much more involved than just diluting with acetone.
There's much more in depth info on our website. Click the link in the video description & then visit our "How Biodiesel Is Made" page, which explains the details.
congrats bro, awesome vid
Nice video Graydon. How many milliliters did you obtain of biodiesel from 500 ml of oil?? thank you.
I followed your steps to the letter using new canola oil. Glycerin settled to the bottom and the bio above was CRYSTAL clear. However, after 4 gentle washes in warm water, my clear bio is now a yellowish emulsion. Can you help me understand what went wrong? Thanks for all of you vids that have been so helpful. I wish this one would include washing and drying.
Once you have seperated and washed the diesel, will it congeal at low temps, or will it stay at that liquid state just like regular diesel? I'm wondering about cold weather operation.
I want to make this for my parts washer. I hear it works well. I'm going to go to online now to buy lab equipment, lye, methanol, and a scale, and then wait for the DEA to kick my door in at 3 AM.
nvm found the presentations eventually but will i be able to calculate accactly how much methanol is needed when i saw these presentations? The only thing ive to know is how much tryglycerides are there in my oil but i dont know how to know that part. Do i need to do a titration for it?
will it work with corn oil? how about a mix of several cooking oils (corn, olive, sunflower)?
can the glycerin separation be done by titration?
Hello! I am from Argentina. I learned to do biodiesel with your videos! Thanks you very much! But I have a doubt, how can I check the quality of muy biodiesel. Modern cars aré todo sensitive about Water in diesel or soap. AND I am scared of breaking sometging! Can you tell me how to check that ay home?
Can you demonstrate us by burning the prepared biodiesel from canola oil am about to buy and add it to my old car for school project purpose it would be useful for me
Will it work with ethanol?
Thank you very much @UtahBiodiesel This was very useful. Can you tell us what measurement to use for NaOH please?
2.8g
Sir, Could you tell me what will happen if I add excess of KOH??How will it hamper the reaction?
Hi. This is a great video. I want to try it for experiment. May I ask? What is the target Temperature before you pour it to another jar? Thank you.
Sir can you please explain what titration should me done to guess the amount of NaOH or KOH what should me used in burrete and that normality is to be obtained?
Please explain me!
hello i just wanted to know bio diesel can work at cold area in - 15 c degree or more ..
so could i use these steps, but replace the veggie oil with Hemp seed oil?
How did you separate glycerine?
Please Answer..
How much Bio Diesel is preapared from 500 ml of the oil you used in video ?
great vid, but would be nice to know how you removed the bottom layer...
Can we use sel 🧂 instead of potassium / sodium ? Also normal alcohol instead of methanol
Pour alkai in boiled oil and effect bubbling high. Separates glycerin
How are you separating the Glycerine ?
One thing you should always do when making biodiesel, wash the product by adding water after removing the glycerin, this will allow other impurities such as soap to cling to water, which is a polar molecule, and then you agitate the water into the fuel, and let it sit. This should settle out any other impurities that could potentially gunk up your fuel lines. Otherwise, great video :D
You could preferably dry wash it by pumping air to the bottom of the tank
Hi, I'm making my own biodiesel for my science project. However, I am wondering, I'm doing this at home, and not at a lab, so do you have to use burners, or a stove?
Thank You.
This is really interesting. Based on the price of diesel people will want alternatives but how much does vegetable oil cost? I think its a lot higher than diesel. The only way to do this would be to use used oil and multiply the ingredients by about 1000 to get a half of a tank in my coach. How about something with used engine oil?
Cool 😎 but while at it, recommend “safety glasses” and “well ventilated” area.
Could it be used in place of kerosene for a (indoor) heater?
could you use a drink like vodka or risky, anything with a high volume of alcohol
Ok ill see what i can do. Thx anyway man :)
What is the reason why you need to process cooking removing the glycerin?
Tx
can you use this diesel in the cars or bikes?
Can you use old motor oil?
how do you preform the separation of deiseal from glycerin
How much sodium hydroxide would you use if that was your catalyst? All my conversions have come out thick and jello like
I ve done it in 2005 with sodium carbonate and spirit well
How about coconut oil and soybean oil? Will there be any changes?
how do you remove the glycerin?
Can u tell me the temperature at which biodiesel is dried to remove water??Ph of biodiesel??
How do you remove the glycerin and what can I use this in?
If it takes 10 minutes for KOH to dissolve in the methyl alcohol how long does it take NaOH to do the same?
Sir! Is it ok to used ethanol instead of methanol?
why do you need to heat the oil? to save time? how long would it take without heating the oil?
What would you say is the amount of 3.5 Grams Potassium Hydroxide (KOH) percentage wise? when compare to the initial 500 ml of Canola Oil.
Can you substitute ethanol for methanol? But the off the shelf 96% ethanol one?
@chikinlikin123 I like it when someone who is 14 years old is already into this stuff and making an effort to learn the chemical wonders and other knowledgeable stuff, unlike many others in the similar age group wasting their time replying to Justin Bieber's Twitter or catching up on their latest dirt about a celebrity. Congrats to you, you'll go far in life :)
I understand the total liquid amount is 500ml oil and 100ml methanol. round that up to 1 litre of oil and 200ml of methanol what amount of bio diesel is left because they're is glycerine in the bottom which needs to be thrown away.
are you left with a full litre of bio diesel after removal of glycerine?
If you use a litre of oil do you just double the other ingredients?
@drewzillasaurusrex Plan on about 15-20 minutes with NaOH.
wow
ok so a couple of questions... what do you do with the glycerin that is removed? is there any lifespan to this bio diesel like gasoline...?
thanks, great intro video to making biodiesel!
Nick Gargiulo Wash it, dry it, test it and the lifespan is only 6 month or more.
What's the sodium hydroxide for?
@gothicillusion2002
lye produces a new chemical called methalhydroxide. 1 thing to notice in the mixing process is as the chemicals react they produce a emense amount of heat. A easy way of mixing in all steps is to purchase a cheap blender. 5 minutes should be good for the methanol and KOH solution, 15 minutes for the oil and methalhydroxide. When your mix is all done and settled you will want to check both the PH and the specific gravity of it. with proper research you can get the exact #'s.
It will potentially create more soap than normal if you use more KOH than needed. The reaction will still occur though. You just get more soap.
I wish you showed us your method for pouring off the fuel from the glycerin. I would like to know how you remove the glycerin.
If you let it sit for a long time ,like weeks....the glycerine forms like a jello at the bottom.
Can we use alcohol in place of methanol
@robowarior100 We didn't show washing in this video, just processing it into Biodiesel.
Sir how to make petroleum from grass cellulose
How much in a large batch? Just multiply the amounts equally? Say 2x the amount of canola oil, 2x the amount of "heet", 2x the amount of KOH or NaOH, 130°F, mix. Or is there a specific ratio?
hey how do you know how much methanol you actually need? Cuz i dont know how much tryglycerides are there in sun oil. pls help its for school :)
Please I’m your new subscriber a question i don’t understand Englisch very well me question is can i use this oil Later and glycerin too??? Can i use normal álcohol ??? Thank
Can you please answer the following question?
I need those answers for a project.
Can this be done on a large scale? Will there be loss or profit in the processing of waste vegetable oil to biofuel?
Can you name the advantages and disadvantages if this were to be practiced as a main source of fuel?
Thank you.
Yes. It can be done on a large scale. In the US there are several commercial companies making it large scale. Look up National Biodiesel Board for more info. Profit and loss is dependent on how well you run the business. It's a tricky business model though. Visit our website (Utah Biodiesel Supply) and look at the Why Biodiesel page. Also, look up the Handling and Use Guidelines for more details on pros & cons.
Thank you for the information!
It really helped me in my project.
