A movie about a madman who tries to get a huge ship over a mountain and nearly kills everyone, made by a mad filmmaker who tries to get a huge ship over a mountain and nearly kills everyone. See Les Blank’s documentary about the latter part.

What a lovely little essay about this film! I went in looking for a basic plot summary and I got so much more context than I expected! Thanks for making this.

And the documentary film ‘Burden of Dreams’ about the making of Fitzcarroldo turned out to be actually BETTER than the film itself! I’ve seen them both twice and much prefer the documentary.

I think there is a good 90-100 minute film somewhere in the current version of Fitzcarraldo. As a 2 hour 30 film it takes too long to get to the iconic ship pulling sequence and we stay too long on the ship pulling sequence when we get there.
Its why Aguirre and Strozeck are my preferred non documentary features from Herzog. They are edited efficiently and with care.

i wouldn't have watched this movie if it wasn't for that poster in which claus is pointing back at the boat being dragged with an insane look on his face. the movie isn't the same without that poster, i was surprised to find a high quality copy of that poster on redbubble of all places and it was worth every dollar.

Watching footage of this film i thought it was about the adaptation of In the Heart of Darkness from Joseph Conrad. What a madlad is Herzog!

Honestly, I dont see what is great about Kinsky. He is not that good an actor. He only plays himself.

It's the most idiotic film I ever saw. But I search for the scene where Kinski makes ridiculous arm movements, may his damned soul be cooked and fried until the Sin leaves his spirit, if he ever had one.
