Ian was literally discharged from the hospital after an overdose just before this show, the poor guy was in no fit state to perform yet he always concealed his pain from his peers. rip ian, a true legend.
I recall reading an interview where the actor who played Ian described how difficult it was because they had Curtis' widow onstage to help them with the character. He said that more than once she addressed him as Ian without realizing it.
Oh god, I would feel so awful if I were Sam when that happened. Ian caused so much pain to Deborah, not to mention the trauma she carried from being the one to discover his body. Having to see the ghost of him in the form of Sam's performance must have been difficult for her.
@@WobblesandBean I personally think that despite how much her relationship with Ian was, she still probably loved him and I can't imagine the struggle she went through with finding his body and having to raise their child without him (Granted Ian was already distant after Natalie was born, but still).

@@tychristopher7 Well, from what I heard the guy playing Ian Curtis was a band member who happened to look a lot like Ian, not an actor. But then again I see this type of stories all over these comment sections so I'm not even sure anymore.
I like how they've used the discography of the tracks to underline important aspects or events in Ian's life. During "Disorder" his own inability to perform was portrayed, for example, and during "Isolation" he was shown alone in the recording booth looking in from the outside at Annik and the others. "Atmosphere" ("Don't walk away insilence...") was played in the suicide scene. You can tell the cinematographers of "Control" really thought about what they were doing.
Atmosphere also chronologically functions as one of the last songs written by Ian and the song that the director filmed a music video for. Couldn't end the movie on a better note
It fits because the director _was_ someone who did do some work with JD. Anton Corbjin did some photos for the group and, as @Sabbathfaxx pointed out, he directed the music video of "Atmosphere".
It broke my heart too, I cried so much after watching it, I mean to kill himself on the eve of them leaving for an American tour which would have made them big.
And one of the problems is a belief, especially with younger generations, that everything can be “fixed”. Sometimes it can’t. Some people are outliers and their time with us - and the gift they bring - is fleeting.
Why is being a drug addict always labeled as being a mental illness. What a bunch of pussies now days. He was a fucking drug addict . So was heath ledger . Amy winehouse a drunk . I'm a huge JD fan and after watching "Control", I sometimes felt like I was watching a documentary because the acting was so good. And I agree 100% with what everyone's saying about Sam Riley's performance as Ian. It's very believeable and the acting in this film is amazing. They aren't lip synching, they're actually performing this and if you think the resemblance is eerie, Sam's acting of Ian's dancing is almost exactly the same. Anton did a great job on the film. Ian, may you rest in peace.
“Take as long as you need… how long do you need?” It initially comes off as comical but this line really does sum up the disconnect that the people around Curtis had when it came to understanding his illness. It’s commendable that the film chose to be so stark in its depictions of his story.
I love when both of your comments said, “0:15 I love that scene ‘take as long as you need, how long do you need?’ Well the whole scene is absolutely intense.”
Ian’s daughter Natalie is in this scene. Heavy make up and hair slightly up to the lower right of the screen. She would have been 27/28 when they filmed this in 2006. Older than her dad ever got. Must have been surreal for her. Sam was only 26 at the time. Mesmerising performance. Should have won more awards for it really
Just to let people know. Press pause on the 0:01 mark. In the bottom right corner in the front row the second person from the edge of the screen. That is Natalie Curtis, Ian Curtis' daughter. You see her throughout this whole scene at points.
This film has to be one of the best music-based biographical films I have ever seen. Sam Riley nailed the role of Ian and managed to perfectly capture his movements and expressions on stage. It was also very well shot and the absence of color really fit what the movie was going for. The film was a very emotional ride into Ian Curtis' life and did an amazing job conveying the band's story.
No, the real story behind this performance was when Hempsall came on, the audience were very angry and some person threw a bottle up to the floor which hit the loose lighting above and caused it to come down and smash onto the audience. The last ever Joy Division performance ended as badly as it had started it seems. :P
This scene was the hardest scene to watch. something was tearing him up inside, and even his best mates wouldn't help him sort it out. Possibly the most under appreciated bands of manchester music scene era. Even Tony of Granada t.v. took a while to really acknowledge them as well as the stoned roses.
I think it also didn't help that since it _was_ the 80s, I don't think there was any way to help Ian out. Epilepsy was still something not really understood, let alone depression. I still can't imagine what his band mates felt with Ian's death.
There’s a scene at the very beginning where the bassist threatens to beat someone’s head in at a bar and then the guitarist says “I’ve seen him do it before” It’s cool they paid it off by making him excessively beat this shit out of that guy
It was such a stunning portrayal / portrait. It didn’t just tell the story, it bled, it confessed. A thoughtful film to honour him - and JD’s significant contribution to music.

From my understanding Hooky/Bernard/Steve actually went to the psych ward Ian was staying in after physically recovering from trying to take his own life by overdosing, had him discharged (back when you could do that sort of thing), and drove right to this show. No wonder the poor fellow couldn't perform.

great movie scene but in reality it didn't go down this way. the riot only happened after the gig when Joy Division were in their dressing room. the gig ended up being a jamming session with Section 25 because Ian could only sing 2 songs. he tried to commit suicide the night before so the gig should have been cancelled
Riot Vans read Peter Hooks book on Joy Division bud. He heard the screaming and went out to help but his wife, barney and Tony Wilson dived on top of him to stop him. He was fuming but in hindsight he knew it was a good idea because he would 'have had his fucking head kicked in'.
Hooky did indeed smack a fan with his bass, but it wasn't at this gig. It was at an earlier joy division show. It's all in his book my friend
@@RedMachineKieran section 25 --research.dear boy,research,
@@jarokalac7723 was obviously a typo dear boy
@@RedMachineKieran no doubt, im sure that the band might eventually forgive your late night fingerdrift.
From my understanding Hooky/Bernard/Steve actually went to the psych ward Ian was staying in after physically recovering from trying to take his own life by overdosing, had him discharged (back when you could do that sort of thing), and drove right to this show. No wonder the poor fellow couldn't perform.
worst friends ever, bernard and hook never talks about it
