Here's my previous video giving you a 101 on leftist lit: ua-cam.com/video/h-Zxxs3ZhZs/v-deo.html TIMESTAMPS FOR DIFF BOOKS: 0:54 - Antifa Comic Book by Gord Hill 4:18 - This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs the Climate by Naomi Klien 16:20 - Anarcho-Syndicalism by Rudolf Rocker 25:20 - V for Vendetta by Alan Moore 36:26 - Mutual Aid by Kropotkin
My two cents about Kropotkin's "Mutual Aid". Although it was originally published in English, I think you still have to bear in mind that he was writing in his third foreign language. In the 19th century, French was the language the Russian aristocracy spoke flawlessly. Kropotkin also learned German iirc, but English he taught himself through reading because he wanted to read the scientific studies being published in English. (There's a hilarious story in his autobiography about the time he was forced to flee the Russian Empire, ended up in Scotland and could only communicate with his landlady by writing notes because he never learned how to actually pronounce English words. The autobiography's called "Memoirs of a Revolutionist" and is a great read, if anyone's interested :) End of tangent.) So I think it's fair to assume that he did not have a perfect command of the language and/or was unaware of the negative connotations that certain words had (if they even had had them at that point, I have no idea.) Even more important is the fact that in Russian, words like savage are not derogatory even today, imo (source: am Russian). It's kinda hard to explain but I think because Russia never had slavery on the basis of race and never ventured to other continents to conquer "lesser" peoples with a different skin tone, words like that are a non-issue over here because they aren't meant to hurt anyone. (Don't get me wrong, we have other racial issues and words that are considered demeaning. But not "savage.") So yeah, that's my take on Kropotkin. I wouldn't say he was a racist. He was a very intelligent and well-rounded person who stood up for things worth fighting for, and I'm glad he's known outside of Russia and his works are still read.
Just found your channel, and I'm loving the reviews! Not sure if anyone else mentioned it, but since you said you wished Kropotkin had an entire chapter on ethics.... even better; he has an entire book! It's called Ethics: Origin & Development. I happened to find an old copy at a book sale one day. The introduction describes it as a sequel of sorts to Mutual Aid. So definitely check that out if you're looking for more from Kropotkin on ethics. Keep up the great work!
Hey Ashton I really enjoyed this video! I love when you do book reviews because I feel like you really explain all aspects of the books without giving too much (plot) but also being clear to explain negatives and positives. For your leftist book reviews the beginners guide really helped me and interested me...also I actually really appreciate you sharing graphic novels because I’m a very visual person/I adsorb things better through audio or visuals (idk i just really love visual art/design colors when it comes to bringing together a story) so yeah I’m definitely going to look into the two you shared
I don't know how or if it's owned by any certain corporation, but apps such as Hoopla and Overdrive have lots of media- they're through public libraries so if you have a library card you can access ebooks, audiobooks, tv shows and movies
Thanks for this. I always wanna read so many books but am too broke to buy most of them and my local library doesn’t usually have books that I wanna read so this is really useful
This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs the Climate and Pedagogy of the Oppressed is on Scribd witch is 8.99 a month for unlimited reading of books, audiobooks and comics but their selection is not fantastic, so check with your local library if they have an audiobook service because they usually do. And a some older books are available in audiobook form on youtube like The Conquest of Bread, Mutual Aid, Anarchism and Other Essays, Reform or Revolution and The Communist Manifesto.
WOW, what a bunch of good books! I'm actually in agreement with just about every one of them you've reviewed, I would probably read the whole ANTIFA book, but great they made a graphic novel about it for those who don't want to read the main book about it. I was taken aback when "pumpkin face" declared ANTIFA an actual terrorist group... WHAAAAAAAT!?!?!?!
4 things to point out I like attitude of doing things with style 👍 I heard Alan Moore is suppose to have anarchist thinking and Naturally V for Vendetta shouldn’t be exclusively the only read if one wants to understand his perspective on it. I liked how you just bounce around with each book. Charles Darwin did write works that were anti-social-Darwinism that were on the rise back then with the “ascent of man” and even a fair reading of the “origins of species” doesn’t give much way into interpretation it’s a justification for the survival of the fittest fallacy.
I watched this right after Jregs extremist book reviews video. Both were "well worth the watch". Also I agree with you. Centrists are lukewarm and need to be encouraged toward a more radical stance. I tend to encourage them to read Rand, Marx, Kaczynsky, or Hitler, but your recommendations will also do the trick.
hey I've seen some of your videos and just wanted to ask: what do you study at college? you didn't mention in the videos ive watched and i just got curious about it

There is such an irony to your video essay on the v for vendetta scene being copy-right claimed.
Libby is great for audiobooks and goes through your local library
