Because of this, in my opinion, I call capoeira carioca "the ninjutsu variation" of capoeira, because the knives they use are almost similar to that of Japan's ninjutsu subgenre called "koppojutsu" - the art of short-length knife fighting. They don't do this dirty type of capoeira which often meant stab wounds, permanent injury or even death to opponents nowadays, especially on or by "iniciantes", and often the dirty techniques are used only by capoeiristas higher-ranked than iniciantes. They would do this but not too much full contact. And even masters (mestres) who demonstrate the techniques usually do that "bunkai" style, even when playing in the actual roda.
A full-contact blow in carioca--the "telefone", if done with full commitment, can exert a few hundred pounds of force into the eardrum system of the opponent, causing permanent hearing damage as well as terrible pain in the ears. Tinnitus is also likely too--also permanent. In rare cases, it can lead to brain swelling and even a hematoma, which, if it happens, and it if not treated in time, can cause death. And even if the capoeira fighter survives the "telefone" blow, the pain will be so bad that for that person--"one's fight will be permanently over."

Qual Grupo Liberdade a que esse mestre se refere? Me lembro de ser aluno do Mestre Beto há 20 anos atrás (ele morava no Leblon em frente ao Jardim de Alah). Não sei exatamente se é do grupo dele que ele se refere...
