Same here, even more so if you have a kid gaming in your family. They lose interest quick or beat games really quickly. If you do the gold loophole and max it out, like I usually do, 1yr of gamepass isn't that expensive compared to one AAA title. I buy everything on Steam, when on sale if I am going to play it long term.
I have an active game pass sub. I will be playing it day 1 on game pass. As the mod scene explodes I will see if I need to pick it up on steam. Play test is a fair description of what I am doing. If the save games are not portable. I guess a fresh play through will be needed.
Doesnt make sense.. Im pretty sure mostly all mods will be on Xbox as they didn't have to make a PS version and it they usually have mods for Xbox day one..
I think its REALLY stupid to think like most people are gonna play this game FULLY via Gamepass.. Its gonna stay top selling cause its a game that will probably take AT LEAST 365 days to beat it.. Thats 170$ a year for one game.. Pretty stupid.. Also yes people would still play Skyrim without mods. MAJORITY of games sold were on console and only Xbox ever had any kinda modablity and it honestly was very small.. Most people are playing WITHOUT mods.. Mods DEFINITELY give the games life but lets PLEASE not act like they make dogwater games til modders get it when AGAIN MAJORITY of players only play vanilla.. Lets give modders thier credit but also not lie like Bethesda gave them a trash setting, lore, and more..
As someone who has played modded Fallout 4 and Skyrim AE… I immediately knew to pre order on steam because the Xbox version won’t have as many compatible mods. I specifically switched from console to PC in 2018 for modded games.
I used to use gamepass for trying out games but its not something I really do anymore Steam Deck being a big reason, i know gamepass kinda works on steam deck but its very hacky and not near as nice as just playing on my PC and then immediately jumping over to my steam deck. Another big reason is I just don't have enough time for it to be worth it, I'll play maybe one or two games in a month for a few hours, which is really not enough for the subscription to be worth it, just an unfortunate reality of being an adult with limited free time. (Which, sidenote, is why I don't think gamepass is as viable as netflix for example, where you can just throw something on while you're doing whatever. Games require active attention so you really need to carve out time exclusively for them)
I’m still getting it on game pass pc first, I ain’t spending money until I’m confident the game works at launch when it comes to game crashes and some really annoying bugs and I’m planning on a vanilla play through at least once (unless a god level bug is being a cheeky guy)
We waited a LOOONG time for a game like Starfield. We can wait a few weeks longer I guess before jumping in and sinking hours on the 'wrong' platform. I personally will wait until the end of the year I guess before getting the game. By then we know where to best play the game and the mods will be available that fix the expected shortcomings that are expected of a Bethesda game.
I'm thinking these won't be problems due to being the same day on both. The Monster Hunter and Skyrim examples were not the same day. It's definitely worth considering, but I'm not extremely worried about it.
Even though I have an active Gamepass subscription from my purchase of the ROG Ally it was going to be a day 1 purchase on Steam. I want to own my games, especially the ones I mod and suspect to sink many hundred hours into.
Honestly, I've played through both F4 and Skyrim multiple times on various platforms, without ever using mods. Mostly because I'm too lazy to bother figuring out how 😂 I'll get Starfield on GamePass because I have the subscription anyway and it lets me get it running on the PC and Xbox both to see which I end up playing mostly on (embarrassingly, I've very rarely turned on my Series X since I kinda impulse-purchased it... 🙄) If I find myself desperately keen to get mods into the game for whatever reason, I might consider buying on Steam, but I'm also sufficiently stubbornly Scottish to just bull through on vanilla for the sake of not spending any more money 😂
That's true I repurchased Skyrim on Steam when I realized I couldn't mod on game pass, meaning I bought Skyrim on the Xbox 360, PS4 and PC. Xbox Game Pass is great from a try before you buy perspective, case in point, I recently tried generation zero fell in love, bought it on discount on Steam and now I'm roaming beautiful Swedish landscapes on bicycle whilst simultaneously gunning down (and running away from) skynet-styled robots. I'll be back, Bjorn.
The reason I got the steam edition. I have most of my library through steam so would rather have the one application opened. Both have cloud saves, but steam is definitely more user friendly
Thank you very much for that video, it helped me in making a better informed decision. I did fall in the trap. I just realized that Mods using ini file changes just don't work with the gamepass version. So my assumption is, that modding as a whole will not really be a thing for the gamepass version. For many players this will be a non-issue and if you enjoy what else the gamepass has to offer for you, I would not say it is a trap. For me though as someone who wants mods, and plays a few games for a long time instead of many games in rapid succession, it was probably a bad decision. I now take my gamepass Starfield version for more like a demo and try it out shot, but once it launches for the masses on September 6th, I guess I will just buy it for real on steam and do a fresh start there so I can be sure I will have access to all those mods that will surely make the game better and better over the coming years.
I just had an email from xbox telling me my several years old gold pass is now become a game pass. With a sneaky 50 dollar increase no less😢 but maybe this is good for me now?
I don't plan to play Starfield but I discovered the cross save issue when Forza Horizon 5 was available on Steam in 2021. I was happy to be away from the terrible MS Store installer but I couldn't import any data from my previous games like I could always do before. Irritating. I do have a Gamepass subscription at the moment but only due to greed on the part of my phone carrier, they put the price of my plan up enough to annoy me so I moved to a cheaper one, with more 5G data and a free swappable extra such as Gamepass...
Modding games on gamepass has become much simpler in recent times as long as the developer opens the game up to allow people to mod it. If mods were an issue though and i wanted to play it on steam, i would make a new file to play with mods anyways, so it wouldn't bother me if there were issues transferring the save. On the issue of "you only rent the game you don't own it", buying a game would be the equivalent of 5 months of game pass. There are very very few games that i am still playing 5 months after a game comes out, so even if i bought game pass to play a game on it as long as i'm done with the game before 6 months i have broke even or done better on the games price, even something as good as elden ring i wasn't still playing 4 months later. I already have game pass which will also be the only reason i'm playing starfield so on top of everything else being a complete non issue to me, i already have game pass because it allows my kids to have access to tons of games without me buying any so anything that comes out that i want to play is basically just a bonus for me.
I’ve saved thousands of dollars using gamepass. It’s not a trap it’s literally spending money to save more money than you are spending. You have access to a few thousand dollars worth of games for like $15 a month. It’s the smartest decision for any gamer to buy gamepass. There are some issues I guess if you use steam and want to transfer stuff but that isn’t a problem for most people.
Gamepass is great if your already on console. But I hate that saves can't transfer to steam versions of games. Weirdly enough halo games transfer just fine between xbox and steam. But forza h5 didn't and that soured my opinion cause I wanted to permanently own the game on steam.
for me gamepass is just a way to test games before i get them on steam if i can get it dirt cheap not worth the full price in my opinion because if you dont complete every single game it has you will spend more money on it in the long run then just 2-3 games bought in a year and if you wait for games to get cheaper then you will spend deffinitly more on gamepass
Bluntly I have been following you since your photography reviews. I love your honesty and I love you as a person. You are great. And please keep doing you. Sub for life.
Day 6 really, since if you paid more you get it on 1/9/2023. Mods are what they are though, I'll play without on gamepass and buy it in a steam sale later.
My intention is to use GamePass for PC as a trial for launch. I have money set aside for a Steam copy if and when the game is a decent version worthy of me actually buying it. That also considers the state of the modding, which I will keeping an eye on as I play on gamepass. Don't really mind if I have to start it over. Did that with Death Stranding...which has absolutely no way to transfer saves between PS and Steam. Did it with GTA V too...same move. I figure if I value the game enough to actually buy it....I won't mind starting over again to get it right on the subsequent playthroughs. Also, definitely using a virtual card to pay for the Gamepass sub that I can shutoff after I pay for that first month.
Are their graphical fidelity differences between gamepass and other versions like steam for starfield? The game seems to play very well with a 3600x and 3060. 1080p high/ultra or 1440 high while streaming game capture in OBS. Aside from looking like deus mankind divided's big brother it is pretty smoothe.
gamepass has a few games I want to try but didn't want to risk my money on so getting gamepass and ALSO trying out Starfield is a steal! If it's good ill just buy it on steam and cancel the gamepass subscription once I've played a bunch of other games XD
I have yet found a game to keep coming back to on the ally, I've purchased and refunded a few games thru steam. I preloaded starfield thru gamepass and thought about cross save, I have $40 in steam credits, should I just buy starfield and cancel gamepass?
Excellent video Blunty! Often I don't have anything to add in comments, so instead I'm just going to comment with a dolphin emoji for the boost in future videos. 🐬
Im having this issue now just not with mods but transfering my save to steam. I bought the 30 dollar upgrade but i decided i just wanted to buy the full game on steam after playing for a bit so i refunded my 30 dollar purchase and bought it on steam. However, even though ive been able to transfer saves from game pass to steam in the past. They have made it completely impossible on starfield. It puts the save files into folders and then splits the save files up into like 25 different files in that folder. Its literally not possible to move it to the steam save folder and have it work. BUT if anyone has figured that out or a work around id really appreciate you reaching out and letting me know :)
I will get it later when I done XBOX and its cheaper and then the decent mods are out and tested wont be bothered about save file tbh - I will have a modded play through on steam... The other issue is you needing a decent rig for PC steam version - so xbox does at least means we all set and ready and game will work....

I think the microsoft ecosphere of this launch will get a lot more love and compatibility this go around. Bethesda is the one game that even managed mods on console. Yet like you said the compromise on MS versions were apparent compared to steams mods. I believe they are going to try to make this accessible beyond what we've seen before. Its an opportunity for microsoft to cater to their platform for once. This is the first time modders and people who just play this game have the foresight on this previous desparity. I see it getting more love. Equal love? Thats definitely up for debate unfortunately
