Class act Ed Kranpool. Brings back fond memories of my childhood when I 1st started watching baseball in 1970. Rest in peace Willie and thank you Mr. Kranpool... for memories that last a lifetime.
I was at Willie's 1st game as a NY Met. It was Mother's Day, and I had taken my mother as her 'gift'. We got large brimmed straw hats as a gift. Willie hit a home run and gave Mrs. Payson the bat after he crossed home plate. A memory all these years later....RIP.
My dad took me to this game.

I remember watching that game. I was thrilled when Willie joined the Mets, even though he had very little left.
nice to know Ed is still around and he sounds good. still remember when the sign man at Shea called him Loopenark The Great.
Ed was a Bronx guy, and went to Morris HS with my mom and dad!!!❤
As a as a Mets fan growing up in the 70s, I didn’t realize that Kranepool at such a thick, NY accent (I guessed he sounded normal to me back then😅) Now I hear it so clearly. What section of the Bronx did he grow up in? Were there any other famous Mets or Yankees actually from NYC? (Other than Kranepool, Lou Gehrig, and Joe Torre) (I just know those ones off the top my head)
Yes… Ed is a Bronx guy but he went to James Monroe High School not Morris.

My first sports hero. I remember being eight years old, just discovering baseball and watching my first MLB all star game in the 1965 season. This one black player was introduced and the crowd immediately jumped to their feet with a rousing standing ovation that last a while. Growing up black in the Deep South during those years of segregation and racial tensions, l was amazed by the respect shown for that black man at that time in history amongst all that turmoil. This was still less than twenty years since Jackie Robinson was initially disrespected in every way possible. That player was Willie Mays. Back in those days we only had two (clear) television channels and one tv game a week, so whenever l saw Willie Mays (maybe once or twice a season) it was something special.
I Thought for sure MLB ⚾ Legend Sr. Willie Mays would see 💯 RIP 🌹
Ed Kranepool. Class Act. (~Mr. Met) came to my elementary school in 1977, in Larchmont/Mamaroneck, NY. & I have his autograph from then for a long time until my mom threw it out.😢

When baseball trap me, older brothers told me: "watch closely that guy named Willie Mays, he is perhaps the best player in baseball, he does everything fielding, batting, running bases, etc." The time was when Kranepool, Millan, Seaver, Staub, etc were mates of Mays with the Mets. Kranepool defines those years.
Perhaps #24 should be retried by MLB for all time in honor of Mays, the greatest all around player.

Kranepool himself is a footnote in Supreme Court history.
Justice Potter Stewart was a rabid baseball fan, and found himself on the bench listening to oral arguments while the Mets were playing a game in the 1973 postseason. Stewart had his clerks pass him notes with game updates…..first every inning, then every half-inning, finally a note for every batter.
The clerks passed a note that read, “Kranepool flies to right. Agnew resigns.” 😄😄
The political columnist George Will once described Justice Stewart as the Pete Rose of Supreme Court justices.

My guess is that Yogi resented Mays’ status as a second manager and the prerogatives that were given Mays and not to other players. I don’t believe that Mays got any playing time beyond game 2.
