  • Fisher Investments’ founder, Executive Chairman and Co-Chief Investment Officer Ken Fisher shares his 2024 outlook for stocks. Ken believes this year will be positive for stocks-perhaps not quite as strong as 2023-but strong nonetheless.
Contrary to investor fears, politics should be a tailwind this year. Ken says politicians typically shift focus to campaigning in a US presidential election year, which lowers the risk of controversial legislation-a dynamic he believes helps explain why election years have been positive 83% of the time historically.* Ken also thinks investor sentiment will slowly become more optimistic as economic growth normalizes. As a result, he believes market leadership may eventually shift towards value-oriented companies when the underlying strength of the economy becomes more widely appreciated. Among other factors Ken expects to benefit markets in 2024, he also reminds us how new bull markets that make it to their first year anniversary-as this current bull market did in October 2023-historically nearly always make it to their second anniversary.

    "History repeats itself..."
Indeed it does, but it's not because we can't learn from it, but because we are deaf to *_reason._* Mr. Fisher puts forth a great thesis, and it's one I share in conclusion (stock market direction) but not in reasons.
I also believe that there is are causal factors...this pattern is not a coincidence. It is related to the elections only because politicians have since been *_distributing your tax dollars_* more and more generously with little or no regard for the ethical conflict of interests doing so creates. They certainly have no understanding of the consequences. Modern politicians are literally destroying the idea of Law by being charitable with both the money they take from you (and future generations by borrowing) and the political powers *_the People_* cede to them at every election. There are huge risks in doing this. COVID brought many of them to the surface.
I also believe that the influence of this distribution scheme is losing its power; Capitalists are adapting to the risks...just like we always have.
The USA abandoned the economic ideas (ignorantly, I think) that created our modern world in the early 20th Century. FDR and his gang of thugs took advantage of this "ignorance" during the 1930's. LBJ accelerated the abandonment in the mid-'60's, driven by another ignorant generation...the Boomers. China is on its own similar cycle, except they are more honest about it; they refuse to abandon the totalitarian habits - and titles - of Communism. Europe has never fully embraced economic freedom; they still cling to nationalism or royalty.
This appears to be a "rinse-and-repeat" cycle except for one thing: there is no such thing as infinity. Cycles of human history do *_not_* repeat indefinitely. Reason does prevail...humans would have gone extinct long ago if it did not. I think some of the "ignorance" that enabled FDR and LBJ and their thugs to do what they did is gone...and better still, it is quickly disappearing.
My question to you, Mr. Fisher, is this: what if the lessons from that era (the late 1960's) have been learned? What facts would upset the historical trend?

If the rally in tech and high-end consumer goods fades and the style switches to value stocks does that mean the gains in tech will simply slow compared to value stocks or will they lose some of those gains?
