    I just got my 4th load delivered today out of 4 drops since 2019. Every load is by a different company, and the chip consistency varies. I don't think I'd consider your chipdrop as a fail, just that maybe since you have a higher standard maybe just buy some mulch next time.

      It's many months later, into the fall season now, I'm STILL picking thorns out of my shoes. For the level of frustration the thorns have given me, purchasing mulch might be a fantastic idea! I guess a pair of heavy soled work boots would be good, but I just cycle my old running sneaks into garden shoes...

      @@DelawareAcredid you specify that you only wanted chips or that you only wanted certain type of wood? That might help with the thorn problem. I’ve recently signed up for a chip drop and said chips only. I want to use it in my garden and raised beds too. Free chips with a cpl wheelbarrow loads of thorns beats spending over $100+ in my book. Wishing you better luck in the future. Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas.

    You should try a pitch fork.. Much easier than a shovel.

    Turn some of those branches into biochar. Great stuff for the garden beds.

    It helps to get them to dump where you need them.
    We have gotten 24 truck loads in one year in the country.
    We have had it chip very small it makes it much better.

      I had to find a company that had very sharp blades on their chipper
      I called around until I learned who I liked the best

    Hi there, sorry about that! It does look like it could have been chipped up a little better, although most of the material looks like good wood chip material. As for the thorns, it is true that there could be thorny material in your delivery. That said, it usually breaks down in a season and the sharp thorns start to decompose.

    I have a cheap yard machine wood composter. Breaks them down more anyways for quicker composting.

    • @DelawareAcre
      @DelawareAcre  8 місяців тому

      That would be awesome to have! Could you put chips like these in there to chip them finer?

  • @OWK000
    @OWK000 8 місяців тому +1

    I want chips, but my place is small and I live on a bit of a slope. If I could empty my driveway they might drop. Wood chips are nice for mulch, but if you want to rot them down for compost quick, urine is an excellent nitrogen source. It does get the ph a bit acid, so for quicker rotting and ph control and mineral enhancement add either oyster shell lime or dolomitic lime with the urine. Good compost will not smell at all. If you are pissing in a bottle, it stinks when you pour it out, but that's all. If you have sawdust to compost, you can mix lime and sawdust in a 5 gallon bucket and just piss right in it and dump to compost and no stink ever. If you get a lot of thorns, you may want to go the compost route with that batch, especially if you have pets, bicycles or like to go barefoot.

      Have you tried skipping the chip drop and contacting an arborist directly? I’ve had 108 yards of wood chip delivered in the past two years by one of my local tree services. It’s all good stuff. No issues to date.

      they are BRUTAL! I think they might be those incase pear trees that have similar thorns. I probably shouldn't have used them in the garden :(

      We have heavy clay soil. Two years ago the chips started coming. We picture framed our entire 2 acre lot. We're over 70 loads now. Chips have turned clay into amazing black dirt. Left piled they broke down very nice in a year. Spread out turned in 2 years and could still use more time to completely decompose. Plants are doing very nice, finally. Nothing grew before. We're still taking loads,but will let sit awhile. Try using a pitch fork. So much easier than a shovel. Hope you do a follow up on how your plants do.

      I'm not sure why you moved the existing old chip mulch under the trees. I would have top dressed the new ones on top of the old ones. I agree with everyone about the fork. I agree with you, the thorns would have been hell! Thanks for the info about chipdrop.
