I've recently purchased some Fotospeed NST Bright White paper, very impressed with the results (after reducing the brightness down on my monitor and increasing the exposure of the photo).
excellent and informative video, I liked how in-depth you were about paper choices. I used to have an epson printer but found it hard to get good prints unless I used their paper with the special coating, but surprised to see so many different papers working on this!
Oh yeah, they work great - I haven't had any issues with any papers yet. I particularly like the results on the Fotospeed paper. Thanks for watching. 😊
Hey Robert, thanks ever so much for this video, exactly what I need though I'm late to the party being out of action for 2 weeks with Covid. I haven't even unboxed the printer yet but I have some of the recommended Canson paper to try, so can't wait to set it up. I'll also get some of those custom ICC profiles too. 👍 Your videos have inspired me! I've 1000's of 35mm B&W negs to scan so I'm now on a mission to rekindle my passion for the darkroom but in a digital space. Thanks again! 👍
Sorry to hear about the Covid, I hope you're better now. I'm sure you'll get some great results out of the printer and that paper. Let me know how you get on. 😊
Hi Peter, it depends on what paper you use. If you choose the paper type as the one that most closely matches your paper, you will get decent results by letting your computer manage the colour settings. I always choose the best quality setting I can. On your computer, choose 360ppi as the resolution. I would definitely recommend getting ICC profiles for your paper though. I bought both the Fotospeed NST315 and the Canson Photographique II from Fotospeed and they have a service on their website to create the profiles for you.
Sorry for the late comment Robert. Great information in this video. I am looking for a printer right now, but I'm not sure I want to spend thousands of dollars for one so this might be a good option. Great information about the different papers affect the print. Seems a bit of an art form in itself. I really liked how the print looked on the Baryta paper although it seemed a bit too dark for your taste. But looked great on the Photospeed paper as well. Great stuff mate, really enjoyed it!
Cheers Paul. I think you're right, printing is an art in itself, and I'm very much learning. It's funny, in the video, the initial print on the Baryta doesn't look all that dark, but I think it's because I've got my bright video lights shining on it. It looks a bit muddy in regular lighting. Defo recommend this little printer for the money. At some point I'll move up to something that can do A2, but I've been more than happy with this so far. Thanks for watching mate. 😊
Hi, I have had problems printing in black and white on my Epson XP-970. I do mainly work with models. Every seems fine on screen, but when I print the image the pubic hair is reddish. Any ideas why? I thought, black [ink] and white [paper] no worries. I am clearly doing something silly. Just found your channel, subscribed and looking forward to watching your stuff. Cheers, Richard
Hi Robert, thanks for this video. If I want to print in black and white only, do you need all cartridges of all colors? Sorry for my stupid question but I'm not confident with this matter. Many thanks - Davide
I haven't tried it Davide, but I think it isn't possible. It's usually to avoid air getting into the print head. If you give it a go though, please be sure to update us. Thanks for watching. 😊
This printer keeps leaving black marks towards the end of paper, ive done power wash, normal, alligned print heads and still the same outcome, ive wasted a lot of paper and still nothing seems to work, any ideas?
Are you using particularly thick paper Frazer? And are you choosing the most appropriate paper type in your print options? If it's not that, it might just be defective. Hopefully Epson can help you if it's the latter.
@@Robert-Bishop im only using 180 gloss, have put correct paper type into settings, ots happening with a4 front load and rear load, it sounds like when its coming towards the end of the paper it stops then the in arm goes across and back then prints the rest, i currently run a canon printer and have never had an issue with it its flawless but upgrade to this for a3 size, print quality is great just those bloody black marks lol

Hi Robert, I wanted to ask, I print with an xp 970 printer on fine art papers, but my black and white prints have a slightly blue or green tone, is it possible to solve this?
Hi there. It''s very hard to know without seeing the details of your setup, as it could be caused by a number of factors. Are you using Epson inks? Do they have sufficient ink in them? Are you converting your image to black and white first, or printing a colour image with black and white settings? Are you selecting to print in grey scale in your print settings? Also what is the brand and type of paper you're using? Hopefully some of these questions can start a journey towards the right answer!
I use Epson inks, the ink is at a sufficient level, the picture is photographed in black and white, I choose to print in gray tones (I also tried with color), I am currently using HARMAN Hahnemuhle fine art paper (matt cotton smooth / matt cotton textured), but the blue and green tones have also been on other fine art papers. In the settings, I choose Fine Art velvet paper (I also tried matt premium)
@@tomsar1415 So if I'm understanding you right, the image was captured in camera as black and white? Do you know if your image file is RGB mode or gray-scale? If it's RGB, then converting to gray-scale may help. You can use Photoshop for this, if you have it.
That's a really nice print Robert, I rarely shoot b&w nor do I own a printer but this video was really interesting to watch. How much ink do you go through while printing? .
Cheers Jeremy - if you're ever thinking of getting one - the XP-970 is definitely good value. It's hard to say with the ink as I always forget to monitor it before and after. I've had the current cartridges in for about 6 months and I'd say on average I do about 2-3 prints a month. I think most of the cartridges are still about 3/4 full.
I have this printer. I've tried many settings and different papers. My problem is, that printer gives a magneta hue to my black and white images. I contacted Epson and they said "well, tough luck". So, I would not recommend this printer for black and white printing or any Epson printer based on their customer service. Money down the drain.
What are your favourite papers for printing black and white images? Leave a comment and let us know. 🙂

Is it compatible with Epson L805 ink?
No, it uses the Epson Elephant cartridges which are not refillable. I believe you can get third party refillable kits, but I wouldn't recommend it.
