My customers P10 came in with (2) 400G namespaces configured/mirrored. (FC 5000 full O/S load), out of the planned (96) namespaces. (6) 6.4 NVMe disks. I followed your steps and created the remaining (94) namespaces The create took 1 min per NVMe disk. The add to ASP took 1 hour. Thank You very much for training me on how to do this. Your videos are HIGH VALUE!
Thank you Niki, if you have a suggestion for a topic for the next video please reply below and if you calling it an IBM i server I’ll give you a name check 🤣
THANK YOU! Im a System i guy planning on helping my customer with a P10. I just built my sysplan and was wondering about the namespace. You answered my question. They are proposing 4 ES3C's, mirrored. I calculate 256 virtual disks for performance??
How does it work for a completely new IBMi preloaded S1014 to restore and opt21? When I am doing a manual ipl from tape, in this case of the nvme, how do I know which disk should I choose to install the lic?
It’s the same as it was with SAS based disks. If there is no load source present you will be prompted to choose one of the name spaces. If there is already a load source it will update it with the lic from the tape
Thanks. Questions: I am working with a customer for 2- S1022s boxes. with 6-6.4TB NVMEs. I suggested 400Gb Namespaces per IBM recommendation. F/C5000 is ordered on one. Will IBM create all the NVMe namespaces as part of the full O/S load. The other one has a F/C 0205. Will the same create of NVMe namespaces occur with the O/S load?
Hi Gort400, Given you are having 6 x 6,4TB NVMe's I would agree 400GB Name space is appropriate, as this should give you a total of 16 Virtual Disks per NVMe, 96 in across the 6 NVMe devices and so 48 Mirrored pairs. I have just looked at the S1022s model and there is no option on this server to ask IBM to configure all possible name spaces. So that combined with the fact you have ordered 6 NVMe make me thing you will need to configure and add in some of your name spaces yourself. The good news is it is not hard and not time consuming. Enjoy your Power10s and let us know how you get on.
Thanks Steve for detailed information, another great video. couple of questions, what if you needed to use 100GB and you already got a 200 GB load source, could you change that or what would you recommend doing, leave 200 and create the rest as 100? also did not quite understand the ENSM feature. What would happen if you did not order it. Thanks a lot again.
So for a straightforward question there are quite a number of answers, I’ll try and keep it brief. If you really wanted the hundred gig name space you have two options, firstly you can format and start again, secondly you can create 100 GB space and do a load source migration just as you would any other DASD. Best practice is not to mix the sizes within an ASAP, however, I’ve seen this done with minimal effect having a different size load sauce to the rest of the units presented in ASP. So, if you really wanted to have a 200 GB load source and 100 GB for the rest that will work. What I can’t tell you is what’s best for you (other than watching my videos of course :-))
@@rowtonit great information and thanks a bunch, everytime I watch your videos i learn something new. Now, about the ENSM feature that you mentioned, what happens if you do not order that?
@@apolina79 The answer to your ENSM question is in the video. "If you don't order it, you just get two name spaces and you have to manually configure the rest"
Great video. I'm currently building a Power 10 with NVM. I've been through the steps, but cannot find any option in DST to "Start Mirroring". I do get an option to Start RAID 10 (very similar), but it bombs out after a while. I have the load source, and additional 6 volumes at 400Gb capacity. When I look at the Namespaces it 'appears' there are 2 x units against each NVM device (separate serial numbers). Not sure if this signifies build in hardware mirroring. I might have to raise a Ticket with good old IBM Bulgaria. OS is iSeries V7R4.
Hi, it quite possible that your name spaces are already mirrored, you can use the Display disk configuration protection option in SST to show this, you should see Mirror Protection at the BUS level If not, the chances are you are going to be looking at the DST option Starting mirrored protection www.ibm.com/docs/en/i/7.4?topic=protection-starting-mirrored Please note that the latter is DST not SST, so you will need a manual IPL to get there. If in doubt, raise a support ticket with IBM or contact your friendly local Business Partner. Good Luck, Brad
Hi, thanks for your question. It’s hard to be absolute in my answer without knowing more but I suspect that since the IBM i mirror sync process is carried out by the operating system not hardware, it could be that the mirror sync process will not complete until you IPL the server for the first time after you build the NVMe mirror configuration. If that is the case the Mirror Sync will take place when you boot the server. If it still shows as mirror pending after that IPL, I would contact support.

I just asked myself this question this morning, seams youtube can read my mind. Thank you, that was very helpful
Thanks for the step-by-step guide

@@rowtonit Thank You Sir! I have learned a LOT from your videos. Keep up the good work!
how do you even get to these screens to see these options?
You run this from service tools sst/dst
Which mean either a manual IPL or running the STRSST command
SMS?
SMS is aix. SST is IBM i
