This shot reminds of Marcelo Rio's buggy whip or even earlier, Borg's shot. When I first learned tennis, I hit like this naturally. It took a long time to reprogram myself to do the modern forehand. Then I realized that running forehands couldn't be hit with the modern forehand. So I have to reprogram myself back to hitting my old forehand for these special shots. It's all crazy.

🔥It's amazing how we get away from our natural instincts or instructors give us "false" information. I absolutely love this shot, Iga is a MASTER of it. Thanks for your comment Wally Friend! JF

same situation here, lots of coaches told me to stop using buggy whip the last few months and i was told to do normal forehand. i lost so many games these few months until i switch back to buggy whip now , my forehand got tons of spin and even faster now. i can hit full power and the balls are still in

Western forehand grip, very rare on WTA side, creates that Nadal like 2500-3000 rpm top spin. She has worked really hard to make it work.

🔥This is a great point Olaf! The racquet angle on contact really depends on "intent" and the swing path of the racquet. The more vertical the swing path with good racquet head acceleration the more the racquet angle needs to close. On this particular shot her swing path looks to be more "horizontal" which means she does not have to close the racquet angle as much. Thank you for your comment, great insight! JF

It's pronounced like "sh-FION-tek" (I am NOT Polish but that is how her pronunciation sounds from interviews I've seen with her. And no worries, we all need help with pronunciation! @@topspintennis
