It must be so tough for Tom and Markus to do this after just being with Dave Smith last week at Super Booth doing the same presentations. They haven't had any time to process it or grieve, but Dave would want the show to go on as others have said. RIP Dave. You'll be greatly missed in the synth community but never forgotten.
Yeah tell me about it! Dave was the man! His presence would be greatly missed. I played the latest version of the Prophet 10. OMG! That machine is unreal! Tough lost for the keyboard community! May he R.I.P.😔🎶🎹🙏🏾🕊👍🏾
Kudos to @J3PO for the great (and uncredited) demos of the OB-X8 in this video! It's a great synth, but he makes it sound magical through his great playing and voicing. RIP to Dave Smith, and all power to Tom and Marcus for bringing the next generation of the Oberheim sound to players. Looking forward to the delivery of my OB-X8.
Listening in my studio on the big monitors. That first pad at 30 seconds with the panning makes me want to cry. So thick and lush and melancholy. (No effects.) I'm here for it. The guys are smiling but I know they're hurting inside. Much love to the Sequential family. ❤️
Right? Legitimately one of the most beautiful pads I’ve ever heard. If that doesn’t destroy all doubt that this is a true Oberheim I don’t know what will. RIP Dave Smith.
Oberheim, Marcus, please, We need those stickers, shirts ,and more swag available to buy on the website to go with my Obx8 Sweetwater pre-order! Thanks for carrying on, Dave is there with you all, Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
Awesome!!! I worked at large St. Louis music retailer 40 years ago and got to attend a few NAMM shows. I was 22 and remember meeting Markus at the Oberheim booth-- he was kind and really knew his OBs. Killer player, too! Loved the Oberheim sound & vibe. Though primarily a guitarist... I purchased the Oberheim OB-SX. The 'budget-friendly' keyboard (about $3495 MSRP) was loaded with many awesome sounds... 24 in fact. It was a 4-voice!! Later my kind band mates got me an expansion package that added 2 more voices to the OB-SX!! Lots of gigs with that board. Nice rock & roll memories!
I will be very happy to own this historic synthesizer. I have one ordered through Sweetwater. Much thanks to Tom, Dave and Marcus. It will be sad knowing that Dave is not around when so many people start enjoying this synth and make more music. I also have an OB-6, Pro 3 and a lot of fuzz pedals. Maybe an OB-X8 through a Tonebender, Memory Man and Maestro phaser.
Wow! it’s hard to believe Dave is gone.😪I was a big fan of his synths. I purchased the Tempest, Prophet 6, Pro 2 and the OB6. I definitely will have to get the new Oberheim. R.I.P Dave. Thanks for all your great contributions.
Taking the best of the best of the past, mixing in the new idea of today, putting all of that under one hood. This is what we all appreciate.Thank you Tom. Thank you indeed.
What a truly inspiring instrument. I can’t wait to get mine. The only thing that’s wrong is that Dave Smith can’t be there with them to marvel at it… RIP to a true legend who will never be forgotten.
No way the inventor of MIDI and first-ever programmable polyphonic synth has left us....... Resonate In Peace Dave... what a sad sad day I'm glad I got to purchase a Prophet 6 a while back and my DrumTraks they just mean that much more to me now. Dave has left the building but what he left behind will carry into future generations to come... what a legend, legends never die.
This was a hell of a way for me to learn of the passing of Dave Smith. :( That'll do, Dave. Thank you Tom for all you continue to do, and thank you to everyone involved in making this happen. I desperately need this wonderful machine!
What a remarkable synth. I wanna hear more if it!!!!!!!! I want to think everyone involved in the development of the OB-X8 for making it possible. I'm awfully sorry to hear about the news of Dave's passing. With that said, I was glad to see both Dave and Tom (who were once competitors) collaborate together as a team to develop a wonderful synth such as this one. This is an amazing work of art that is comprised of a wonderful sound. I'm looking forward to being able to buy an OB-X8 someday. Team work made this dream work!!!!!
what classy guys. they are releasing this amazing new synth (my favorite synth I own is an ob6) and they spend a lot of the interview in tribute to Dave Smith instead of just focusing on a product. rip dave Smith, what a legacy he has left behind and being a part of helping Tom and Marcus bring this amazing new synth to the market.
I still can't believe that Dave Smith has passed away so suddenly. RIP to the great man. Respect to Tom for still attending NAMM and for bring out a new Oberheim synth for modern times
just tried out the very same setup today at NAMM22, probably made fool out of myself, didn't realize the signal was fed to the headphones AND the monitors, everyone heard the poor performance I'm capable of, but the machine is a beast. Extremely simple, extremely intuitive, extremely capable, extremely tactile, the sound is a monster, a true performer's dream. Oh and also extremely expensive for a hobbyist like me to have it as the next dust collector in the home office. 😛
Don't worry a single second. You had fun, that's what counts. Nothing else. And regarding buying it as an hobbyist... Go for it! If it makes you a happy person, that is a major and important reason imho. Wouldn't it be a great way to relax between tasks you do in the home office? I like being an "amateur", since the word itself derives from "in it for the LOVE", whereas professionals do it for the money. I for instance pulled the trigger and bought myself both a 909 and an 808 despite their high prices these days and you know what? I don't even think about the money, but playing these machines makes me happy and energetic. I'd buy a Prophet-5 or 10 or this wonderful OB-X8 if I could play keys 🤪
And one more comment; I’ve had A Prophet T8 that is immaculate for 12 years; this synth really demonstrates Mr Smiths commitment to excellence. God Bless you DS
Today is June 3. I just got back from the NAMM show. Tom Oberheim was at his booth. At first I was concerned about the apparent lack of modulation parameters (S&H and Sampled Vibrato LFO) that are silkscreened on the OB-8. But Tom Oberheim and his team did something clever. All the 0B-8 functions are present and can be found in page 2--visualized on the display and the function is selected with the left encoder and then the value is adjusted with the right encoder. It also fixed a few of the problems on the OB-8. The volume of the noise oscillator can be adjusted, the amount of keyboard filter tracking can also be fine-tuned. Plus there is oscillator X-mod with destination being either the filter of the other oscillator. Then there's a velocity and aftertouch keyboard! I can't vouch for the sound. Hopefully, someone will do a side-by-side comparison with the vintage models. The on board sounds are loaded with originals from those models.
It's great that you did the interview, clearly that's why the team have turned up but it might have been nice to have passed on condolences at the start of the interview?

So excited to find out about this new OB-X8! Had one of the original Oberheim T8s, will forever regret selling it -years ago- for $1200 to a guy who came all the way from Japan! for a client who wanted that keyboard only! - so I could pay my rent!!! There had to be a better way! That was a phenomenal instrument. Now I know what I'm saving for, thanks! :)
Is t modesty refreshing? Two of three geniuses discussing this great accomplishment spending g their time complimenting / giving the credit to another. I’ve got my OBX8 ordered; down payment made. Our world will miss the genius of Mr Dave Smith
@Collen Flarity it was a joke, dude. But he was definitely already a grown adult which, in retrospect, being his age, is a wow moment. How he's been alive through so much progress in music and technology.
@Collen Flarity I'm betting you have nothing better to do than try and deconstruct the thought process behind a random person's UA-cam comment, and that's because you're also really old, and you're butthurt about my comment. I never suggested that cassettes came out in the 80's, so your betting is wrong. For the record, he would've been 29 when cassettes first came out in 1965.
I get the excitement over this synth. $5k for SMD, digital (I believe) modulation, and no endless rotaries w/LEDs is definitely trading on nostalgia and name recognition. This is NOT a negative comment on the pure, raw sound and wonderful knob per function layout. It is a comment on the technical design and BOM. Swim a bit further upstream for a SE CODE if the sound is your primary indicator.
@@jaykeel7309 this is definitely the first time I have seen any of the current lineup from SE described as too polished/clean. (Particularly with the overdrive option and discrete op amps installed) Out of curiosity were there specific patches/settings and what did the rest of your signal path/processing look like with it?
Wheres the real test though? How does its bell sounds/Sparkly plucks sound? If yall do one of those demo videos with just playing and make some bells and plucks that can rival my OB-6 Ill sell all my gear and buy this thing up front say I wont
I would rather have an OB-X8 than a Moog One. Unfortunately, I can't afford either of them. If the Behringer UB-XA is affordable, I really think I'm going to get one. It would be awesome if they're only in the 1k range. I feel like the Oberheim sound is the most dreamy and epic. It's the best dramatic synth sound that I've ever heard. Moog has the growl, but Oberheim has the purr.
I’d expect synth royalty to be proportionate in their marketing budgets to not use a cheap mackie8 mixer and budget range Adam audio speakers. At 5k I’d expect genesis monitors and a full Apollo top end input interface. That would be proportionate to the cost of this thing or just hide it away. And come on guys an OLED display the size of a postage stamp must mean scrolling forever loads of menus. High cost for something designed to sound old. Mmmm, sound designers will pass.

Is this the Oberheim Dave was working on when he passed away? It sounds remarkable.

That second sound is beautiful!
The end demo...that guy knows how to dial it in!
Great interview Daniel! They look and sound great and so so does the OB-X8.
I'm getting one! I cannot wait.
The masterpiece (OBX-a) is reborn! Thanks!
There are 4 synth engines in it.
legends - happy bday for July Tom and sleep well Dave
Wooooooo! Cant wait!!
Even better with the insight from both of them.
Wow this synth sounds absolutely amazing
Magnificent instrument; memories of my old OB-8 flooding back.
It's great that you did the interview, clearly that's why the team have turned up but it might have been nice to have passed on condolences at the start of the interview?
Hope they’re both doing okay since Dave passed.
My biggest musical regret was selling my OBXA and Minimoog back in the early 90's. WTF was I thinking !!

i know that pain and shame for selling gear to pay the rent. :(
Looks like a Vintage Oberheim!
So i can recreated the 80s sounds
Bring on the Xpander again!
This is the first demo vid that actually made me want this one! Hopefully Oberheim will put out a module for ppl with disabilities!
Sounds amazing and I Iove those push buttons with a led in it!
Nice!!!

sounds really good through my Tannoy GRFs and Mac amps
Super cool
That little bit of "Tom Sawyer" made me think of being at one of those early Rush concerts ...

For me the Code was a great but the sound was too polished. It was just too clean. You can’t legitimately compare the two in my opinion.

I keep saying I won't get this... but I have a savings account for it.
Sweet jesus what a beast! Shut up and take my money! And rip Dave! A shame!
RIP Dave!
Literally ordered one an hour before I got the news…… 😔
Two words: WEATHER REPORT
Nice and chewy sounds. One day I will buy one.

Obviously a great synth. I'm wondering, though, why the screen is so tiny.
I wish they had done the look of this board more like the OB-8. That was a stunning visual design.
Sounds nice. Let's hear some funk.
RIP Dave 😔😢
I was thinking wow more people are understanding how to jam and improves using modal interchanges then I realized it's J3PO. ':-).
i didNT know or even THINK that Oberheim is the name of a LIVING PERSON !!! WoooooooooooW , Long Live Mr. Oberheim :) :)
Oof, $5000! Guess I'll get a Behringer UB-Xa... 😔
Definitely don’t sounds like a midi keyboard
Finally a proper live demo, that dude at superbooth was weird as hell lol.
so sad that i hear that Dave Smith has died
