What I Dislike About UCLA

  • The cons of going to UCLA, according to a transfer student. Limited student housing, high rent, impacted classes and the dreaded quarter system are on the agenda. With that said, I do not regret attending UCLA and I don't think that any of these things are absolute deal breakers - they are probably things you will encounter at most schools. The question is which school you are willing to tolerate them for.

    What she dislikes about UCLA?
    1. Quarter System (10 weeks long + 1 week for Final Exams)
    2. Difficult to get research opportunities at UCLA (hard to be eligible for them because they require a lot of qualifications in terms of courses or experience required AND they are super super selective)
    3. Rent in Westwood (zipcode) = incredibly expensive AND astronomical
    4. Difficult to get into classes you need for MAJOR because of IMPACTION
    5. parking system is a pain; parking is a scarce resource at UCLA; based on a lottery system

    Lovely & Informative as always!
    Would love to see you interview transfer students at UCLA with different majors and get their thoughts and opinions about their experience at UCLA whether it’s academically or personally

      Hello, it sounds like an interesting idea, but I'm very antisocial so I don't think I could even gather enough transfer students to do this 😂I do have a Q&A on my channel with my old roommates from last year so you could check that out in the meantime.

    Thank you for the video! The housing situation is probably the least favorite thing I'm looking forward to if I get accepted. As an international student from Germany, I could've studied for free in my home country. Yet, here I am, wanting to go to UCLA and having to take out a six figure loan. I'd make the same decision again though.

      Hello, unfortunately getting an education here is very costly. I also have to taken out large loans to cover tuition and housing. But I am confident that it will be worth it! Good luck with your journey

    My college has a semester system but we only have 13 weeks per semester, then the exams run for like another 5 weeks after depending on the majors.
    Overall good vid though 😊

    Hi Hailey, did you schedule your courses yourself in the first quarter you got in? Or did the advisor scheduled it for you? I am curious about it since I'm planning to change major. Thank you for the video!

      Hi, advisors may suggest which classes to take but at the end of the day students are responsible for enrolling and the choice is up to them.

    Can a student take courses over summer in between junior and senior year to ensure they can graduate on time? I am just worried about being able to get classes since you mentioned this is a challenge.

    UCLA sounds mad expensive. Do you know if they are generous with financial aid and such? For transfers, that is

    • @HaileyDollarGoesToCollege

      It depends on the individual. There are merit-based scholarships and then there are needs-based scholarships. Personally, they gave me the best financial offer out of all the schools I was accepted by, but it's gonna be different for each student.

      Does the scholarships they give renewable for all 4years?

  • @jimmyramos1989

    I kind of equate the quarter system with taking Winter semester or Summer semester coursers at a CC--which were always a lot harder lol. I have an interview lined up with research and I'm a transfer student. It might be different as a sociology major.
    I'm from San Francisco as well, I am not a stranger to extreme rents lol. I thought $3,000 in East Hollywood was expensive for a two bedroom. I've seen apartments in Westwood for like 4800$ for two bedrooms. Ill stay in Los Feliz and continue to commute to UCLA lol.

      Comparing it to winter/summer terms is a pretty good comparison in terms of the pace. I realize it's been a while since you left this comment so I hope the research opportunity work out for you! Los Feliz is prob my favorite part of LA. If I ever moved back I would love to live there.

    Hey Hailey!
    I just applied as a transfer Philosophy major for fall 2020!
    Currently I have never left the Bay Area but the LA scene seems nice. 1-100, what would say is the percentage of transfer students that are seniors that have housing their entire two years? It would suck since I have no friends or family in LA and don’t know anything about LA. Housing at UCLA as a transfer seems like a downer 👎🏾

    • @HaileyDollarGoesToCollege
      @HaileyDollarGoesToCollege  4 роки тому

      Hi Olivia, I do not know any numbers related to housing for transfer students. What I do know is that 2nd year transfers are considered last for the housing lottery. It is almost impossible to life the dorms as a senior. I have personally only met 2 transfers who have done so. The housing situation at UCLA is actually quite reasonable compared to many other colleges, such as Berkeley or SJSU. Just do some research on the universities you are interested in and I'm sure you will be able to find one that fits your needs for the most part.

    logic?

    • @HaileyDollarGoesToCollege
      @HaileyDollarGoesToCollege  4 роки тому +15

      You've missed my point, which was not about the number of units I am taking, but about the pace of the quarter system. Some classes are better suited for longer academic terms so that instructors have more time to fully explicate abstract material that students might struggle with. I've experienced this difficulty with certain courses even when I was only taking 14/15 units total.

    • @steven-clydebech171

      I wouldn't call it complaining; it sounds more like criticism about UCLA, which is perfectly fine. She also doesn't talk solely about the academic side of it, points that have nothing to do with the amount of units she is taking.
