There is no song like that anywhere, it's one of a kind. It's so powerful, the live version at Rockpalast it's even better. You can really see her hitting those notes, it gives me goosebumps every time.

Will add this live version to the list. Hope to get through some of her other material first though.
I am with you on it's unique qualities. One of the reasons why I liked it so much. Great to find unique takes in the world of music.

The good lord broke the mold after Nina was made. Punk, rock, gospel, funk, jazz, big band, classic and traditional Christmas songs... there isn't much she can't or hasn't done. She did put out two albums of big band music with actual big bands of course... There's a live version of this Naturtrane from Rockplast 1999 worth seeing, along with 'My way'. The whole set is on UA-cam. She was no youngster at that point, but still very worthwhile. Suggesting the live 'Somewhere over the Rainbow', Ave Maria from the 'Nina Hagen' album, and the obligatory and iconic New York, New York from her David Bowie phase. More!

Nina is one of a kind. I watched her live at the time on TV together with my parent - both of my parents were avid opera lovers - and they were as well stunned by her incredible voice and abhorred by her comedical parody of opera singers and performances at the same time.
Nina Hagen is just an icon in German Rock and Punk music… and not only that.

Other amazing songs of her’s coming to mind:
“Auf dem Bahnhof Zoo”, Ich glotz TV” and “Auf’m Friedhof”
    Punk/rock opera at its best!

Best Nina Hagen song ever! Toppop was the dutch version of Top of the Pops. Presented by Ad Visser. The songs were never live, always lipsync. For a live version check the Rockpalast show from 1978. Rockpalast was a German tv show who organized concerts with mostly punk and new wave bands from the seventies. These concerts were aired on German TV. I remember every sunday evening watching Rockpalast, one of the best alternative live shows on tv (I am Dutch and couldn't receive UK TV)

That's lip sync, you should have listened to this live.
    It's Kate Bush on acid.
She peaked creatively on her 3rd album, Nunsexmonkrock. It remains to this day one of the most unhinged displays of creativity ever put on record. I would suggest Antiworld (album version)

Kate Bush is a civilized version of Nina Hagen. Nina sometimes is very vulgar and absolut excentric. Sometimes a genius, sometimes a diva.
I love her ! Especially with this band that later formed the popular group SPLIFF.

Some Nina fans just can't take other people's opinions. Anyways, I understand she resembles Kate Bush because of how wild both can be vocally and visually.
I highly suggest checking more of Nina Hagen when she was with this band before getting into her solo stuff which is different so you don't get confused.

Nina actually left Germany for the UK in 1980. She later moved to LA.and made records with the then unknown RHC Peppers. She is one of the very few international artists from Germany, but has always been a little too edgy, too punk, too guru-believing for the R'n'R Hall of Fame. Her Debut album was very promising. A promise she couldn't keep after she split from her band (who under the name of Spliff advanced to one of the biggest bands of the early 80s in Germany). Her biggest commercial success was "NewYork NewYork" from 1983.

Nina Hagen 1st Number 1 Hit was 1974, so far away from Kate Bush!

    • @PopCultureProductions
      @PopCultureProductions  2 роки тому

Just to clarify the intent wasn't to suggest that this was a copy of Kate Bush. Just the fact that when I heard her she reminded me of Kate Bush as I had heard her before. Scarily over 30 years before for me. One of the big reasons for doing this was trying to find artists that just haven't been in my eyeline or probably more aptly earshot. So far found some I really enjoy.
I also love Kate Bush so it was meant to be a flattering comparison.
Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment.

Nina does NOT sound like Kate Bush. If anything, Kate Bush stole from Nina Hagen. Nina just came out with a new album ("Unity") which is a mix of pop, Christian rock, and activist songs. She did a song with Lene Lovich for PETA ("Don't Kill the Animals"), which I love. I also like "Born in Xixax", "Hand Grenade" (a song about HIV), and her biggest hit "New York, New York". When German chancellor Angela Merkle stepped down from office, she had Nina Hagen perform.

    • @PopCultureProductions

All I can say on that is we hear what we hear and certainly I heard, in this track, Kate Bush. This was a huge positive for me as I love Kate Bush. One of the major reasons I want to hear more.
The other side being, like you mention here, her seeming desire to create music she cares about or loves without feeling restricted by style or genre. Can't wait for more.
