thanks everyone all for the support on this video! I've just posted on my blog everything that I said in the video: thebackroad.me/how-every-turnpike-troubadours-song-is-connected/ (probably should've done this a month ago - pardon the delay!) as I mentioned, I did this a fun exercise to see if I could connect all the songs (and minimize the number of potential lovers), but not what the artist / songwriter originally intended. :)
Learning a ton in this, video! I so appreciate the insights. I feel like this is how I'm deep-diving into all the lore around the family in the new Lumineers album. But you are doing it for their full CATALOG. Geez, it's ambitious and impressive! Love Turnpike Troubadours and I hope they pull through this tough season.
thanks so much Grady!!! it means a lot to me, as you inspired me to make videos in the first place. I hadn't realized that it was possible to share one's thoughts about country music with the world in this manner lol. this video was a ton of work but also super fun to create! (I got to listen to every song a million times lol.) I'm excited for the full 10 part Lumineers video series & possibly do the same thing lol. 100% agree on TT.
I think that "The Mercury" happens just prior to "The Funeral". In "The Mercury" we "never seen Jimmy in that old Corvette" and he's a "hayseed dressed up like James Dean". In "The Funeral" Jimmy is "a counterfeit James Dean" and "drivin' into Okie City in a slightly stolen car"
Lorrie will forever be the one that got away. I believe a majority of people have one of those, but it happens in their younger years and people are still learning about themselves, which makes it hard to be the perfect companion. I truly believe life starts clicking for a majority of people between the ages of 26 to 28. By then, the Lorrie's move on and it's too late, but we often wonder what that relationship would be like if we had our shit together and had the insight of a life more lived, similar to getting wiser with age. Lorrie is the person that the next relationship will constantly be compared to, which the new relationship will not last due to this. I really do love the breakdown of this! Empty as a Drum is my all time favorite because you can feel how much he loves her because the belief that people would be envious of that bond. I now want to listen in this order!
Wow, very impressive! I love it when you find someone who puts into words the way you feel, but can't figure out how to say. Totally agree with everything. You didn't mention 1968, that's one of my faves too.
Cool video about an amazing band! I'm glad I'm not the only one who reads this far into their songs. I've always felt like The Mercury and The Funeral were both about Jimmy and Lori, and that The Housefire was the latest chapter in their saga, after they had both settled down their wild ways and started a family together. I'm glad to hear that Evan is doing well, and they're back together, btw. Also, Doreen is a cover song from the Old 97s. I like how you put all of that together about her though!
Red dirt country, is that what it's called? Their sound is so unique, like a mix of rock, country and bluegrass! They don't care if they blend electric guitar, and violin or drums and fiddle! They just do what they do and throw genre boundaries right out the window!!! I love it!!!!!!!!
My dad showed me them. I loved the first song I heard. Evan Felker is a damn good songwriter. And if he recovers, I hope he does, I would encourage you to see them. They're one of the best live bands. I've seen them twice with my gf
Also, when he says “how good does it feel you belong in these hills” he’s referring to the Cookson hills which are located in Cherokee county. Cherokee county is also where the Illinois river is. They drive barges down the Illinois river around Tahlequah OK (where RC the bass player is from).
Im not sure about danny marrying lorrie but everything else makes since danny would have basically never even met lorrie from what we are told by the songs but everything else sounds just about spot on
Absolutely love this, iv been doing the same thing analysing their music over the years, and love how when I hear one of their songs now it's like having a conversation with an old friend. I can't wait to hear what happens down the line this year, wonder what's happening with lorrie 🤔
What if he tells us who Lorie is in Every Girl? What if she’s literally just the culmination of every woman that’s been in his life and he wrapped up all of the individual experiences into one character?
Every girl was written by Evan and John Fulbright. And yes whoever talked about Rhett Miller in the comments is right, he is a big influence on Evan Felkers songwriting. Of course being from Oklahoma City, I've been to their shows several times. The last being in 2012 or something like that at the wormy dog. They are a great live band!
Thanks for the video, recently found the turnpike boys and they just keep me thinking of the west and dirt roads. Just sitting here smiling ear to ear listening to em feeling goofy as hell.
hell yeah good review, one of my top bands thanks for this vid. I got to say theyve made a whole list of sad songs with happy music ill tell ya one of my faves is a Steve Earle song called “When Johnny come Lately”
I don’t believe that jimmy steals his dad’s gun from the trunk of the car because in the chorus he says “you should’ve brought flowers, you shoulda got your daddy’s gun” which is speaking in hindsight after he’s already left the funeral.
I think he got Lorrie from the singer/songwriter Keith Whitley. He was another great songwriter. He passed away around the age of 30 due to alcoholism. He was married to Lorrie Morgan, another singer. He wrote a few songs about Lorrie.
Hi! Just wanted to say that I absolutely loved this video. It’s so nice to see someone else who is torn up about Turnpikes hiatus. Evan Felker in my opinion is one of the best songwriters in our generation. Thanks again for a great video and if you ever want to talk red dirt songs just let me know! 😎
it's awesome! i love how it feels so happy + victorious, but it's so sad at the same time. and i think it's super cool how the love story (in the past) is told via the hunting trip (in the present).
Old time feeling is amazing but I have quite a different interpretation on it than most people. I like to think that Evan is actually dead in the song and living in an old lover’s dreams (Lorrie’s?) when she sleeps, and reminiscing on their past. He comes to life when she falls asleep. He’s playing a song that he wrote for her while living in her dreams. And that means she’s also dreaming about him. “Now you’re waking up, and I can get some rest.” Such a beautiful song.
Nice video! I'm a big fan of the Turnpike Troubadours too. But what I wondered was: Don't you think that Jimmy and "Evan" are the same person? But like, Jimmy as the bad(ass) side of himself. In the song the birdhunters, Danny refers to 'Jim' when he talks about marrying that girl, and dodging the bullet of marrying her family.
Ok, I have found someone with an education in communications/English/music that analyzes every syllable of a song like I do. Sweet! I, too, hope Evan gets better and returns to the stage and studio. Until then, though, I will listen to and play their music on my favorite old D-18 while drowning in Jameson and Shiner Bock, wishing I could write like my heroes. Peace and love!
Thanks for watching! Funny enough, most of my education is in engineering / math / science. I never thought I was very good at the arts / humanities...
I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on songs that fall a little outside their official catalog like "Come As You Are" which they did with The Next Waltz or songs like "Come November", "The Shape", or "Holding On" from Bossier City
Great analysis of TT...T squared? Cubed?? I’m from Tulsa so I’m required to love these guys but you really hit the nail on the head. And I’m pretty sure Lorrie is everyone’s ex. You should put a chronological playlist together telling the whole story.
Have you thought about the army story line in a few songs? I can tell you from first hand experience the military and relationships rarely do well together. Maybe lorrie is an army ex. Also, check out Lucero. You’d like them too.
This is fantastic... I really like your videos. You need to check out Ian Noe and Emily Scott Robison if you haven’t already. They’ve both released albums this year and they are fantastic. If you like Charles Wesley Godwin, I have a feeling you will really like both of them.
There's no band I listen to more than TT. But, would you be interested in reviewing Gregory Alan Isakov's 'This Empty Northern Hemisphere' album? I'd love to hear your take.
You did a good job here. English teacher in me would suggest to always separate the artist from the narrator but that's me being pedantic. Read your bio. As a kid from very rural southern Indiana I can tell you you'd fit right in.
Thanks for the video, cool perspective on a great band, hope they continue! What are your thoughts on my alternate version of events. I like to think of the songs in this order as the story of Jimmy and Lorrie. The Mercury The Funeral Good Lord Lorrie Bird Hunters The Housefire You can fill in the spaces of the story with other tracks, but consider it starting with ‘The Mercury’-Jimmy and Lorrie in their hard partying days in the city, then in ‘The Funeral’ Lorries description matches the female character with Jimmy, followed by ‘Good Lord Lorrie’, one of their breakups in a roller coaster relationship, then ‘Bird Hunters’ - Jimmy and his buddy after the breakup discussing Lorrie and finally ‘The Housefire’ - Jimmy and Lorrie get back together in the future after each settling down and trying making it work “we finally made a go, got dealt a heavy blow” Got to love writing that would cause listeners to dig in and create their versions of the story, even if it’s not what Evan and the fellas intended!
I see you don't have many subscribers and that's why I'm posting. I agree the Turnpike Trubadors are a one of a kind bandwidth and in my selfish way I want it to stay that way. That is awsome and unknown.
I wish they would bring back the Bossier City album into there catalog. It is by far there most raw album but it really shows there songwriting talent at a very young age.
thanks everyone all for the support on this video! I've just posted on my blog everything that I said in the video: thebackroad.me/how-every-turnpike-troubadours-song-is-connected/ (probably should've done this a month ago - pardon the delay!)

Excellent interpretation, I will add that Doreen probably isn't connected as it's a cover of Ole 97. Did you ever make it out to see their show?
Lorrie will forever be the one that got away. Evan writes his life. In his life I find similarities to my own. Yes, I have a Lorrie. A couple of them.
Evan Felker is the best songwriter I’ve ever come across. Love your insight on the songs and hope to see the band back together again real soon!
He’s my number 2. Tyler Childers is at the top
@@chrisparrish2364 Tyler found Jesus.. Evan can’t stop drinking. Lol
San Francisco guy says "Amen to that!"
Great analysis. I don’t personally think every single song is connected but I think each album has songs that definitely tie them all together.
Wow, very impressive! I love it when you find someone who puts into words the way you feel, but can't figure out how to say. Totally agree with everything. You didn't mention 1968, that's one of my faves too.

THEY'RE BACK! Evan is healthy and happy and we got them back!!!!
My dad showed me them. I loved the first song I heard. Evan Felker is a damn good songwriter. And if he recovers, I hope he does, I would encourage you to see them. They're one of the best live bands. I've seen them twice with my gf
I have seen them once live before in San Francisco! :D it was awesome.
Doreen is a song originally sung by the Old 97s which is Evans buddy Rhett Miller’s band. Love the insight and hope to see Turnpike back together soon
Also, when he says “how good does it feel you belong in these hills” he’s referring to the Cookson hills which are located in Cherokee county. Cherokee county is also where the Illinois river is. They drive barges down the Illinois river around Tahlequah OK (where RC the bass player is from).
Great video! Glad you appreciate the songwriting too and hope you're able to see them live now that they're touring again!
Im not sure about danny marrying lorrie but everything else makes since danny would have basically never even met lorrie from what we are told by the songs but everything else sounds just about spot on
Circling back after Cat in the Rain. I'd love to hear your take on those. I think you done an excellent job with the original works.
Absolutely love this, iv been doing the same thing analysing their music over the years, and love how when I hear one of their songs now it's like having a conversation with an old friend. I can't wait to hear what happens down the line this year, wonder what's happening with lorrie 🤔

OMG I love that!
You have broken the code. Now I have to go back through their entire catalog again
Loved this video great job. Makes me want to go back and listen.
So happy they are back on tour. See you at Red Rock
Very well done! You did an awesome job of making me think a little deeper about the songs I’ve been singing for years
Thanks for doing this, glad to see I’m not the only one geeking out on these songs
Great video and they are coming back!!
It would be really interesting to hear a playlist of these songs thinking about everything you talked about chronologically through the life of Evan
Took a stab at organizing one on Spotify open.spotify.com/user/1289272710/playlist/1nbf56zIPpcax6saE1Pz17?si=F5eAN53QSEWqF2x__4Mlzw
@@patrick23henry Thank you so much! I was looking for something like this!!!

I had a chance to see them last summer but I had a prior commitment. I so should have ditched responsibility and gone to see Turnpike Troubadours. :'(
aw that's a bummer!
Evan has the gift of true story telling !
Thanks for the video, recently found the turnpike boys and they just keep me thinking of the west and dirt roads. Just sitting here smiling ear to ear listening to em feeling goofy as hell.
Great video. Great we got another record coming.
Wow I now need to listen to every song again. You made me rethink a lot about this band.

I’m about to listen to this. Do you cover the other frequent character that runs through the songs? The browning auto 5 shotgun?
Great video!
Great video completely blow my mind. Bit disappointed my favorite Evangeline wasn’t in it but I still love the video. Awesome work!!!
haha I love Evangeline too, but it didn't fit anywhere into my storyline hahaha
The Bird Hunters is my all time favorite!
it's awesome! i love how it feels so happy + victorious, but it's so sad at the same time. and i think it's super cool how the love story (in the past) is told via the hunting trip (in the present).
the backroad very true. i liked how it did end on a hopeful note cause she’ll be back on the fourth of july!
The Funeral, and 7&7

There is actually 5 albums unfortunately you can't get there very first album when John fulbright was with the band.
facts , 2007 Bossier City its on youtube
The song Angola is one of my favorite TT songs.
Great video!!
Every girl was NOT on their first album.
Their first album was bossier city and it was awesome.
Im not sure of the details but I do know they don't count that album as their 1st. Personally it is my favorite
Also the song Doreen is a cover by Old 97's. So i think they just liked the song.
MY favorite band
Loved this video! Thank you a lot for the insights and the passion.
doreen is a Old 97s cover

Jim also shows up in The Bird Hunters, hes getting old.
Beautiful.. just beautiful ⚘⚘
I miss them so much. Its like Evan took Faulkner and made it a southern opera.
Loved the way you connected it all in your more than likely making sense theory......but I gotta say.....I'll might as well quite while Im ahead 😎
I love Turnpike Troubadours! : )
Well no clue how I found this now. But I'm in love with you ❤

you missed 2007 Bossier City album @the backroad
yes, I had realized this later. unfortunately it wasn't on Spotify :P
Favorite band of all time. Hope Evan gets better.
Doreen is 100% unrelated; it’s an Old 97s cover. a great band out of Carrollton, TX. Great video tho
Hahaha I know. Everyone pointed this out to me later 😂 Oops! Thanks for watching
There's no band I listen to more than TT. But, would you be interested in reviewing Gregory Alan Isakov's 'This Empty Northern Hemisphere' album? I'd love to hear your take.

Hey Christine May, you could be a literature professor but probably already have a better job. Thank you for sharing this!
And... they're back! Impossible to get a ticket to their shows but I will prevail, god dammit!
i like them i miss them
They're great, most country music that deviates from the Nashville template is. :)
You should listen to lost dog street band
hang on.. Doreen is an Old 97's song. .isn't it?
Great video!!!!
Turnpike lyrical universe
Evan- my boy.
You should take all this and write a love story, better than evan ever will. So beautifully tragic
Who is Lucille?
But Doreen is a cover
Rc Edwards is my Uncle
I wish they would bring back the Bossier City album into there catalog. It is by far there most raw album but it really shows there songwriting talent at a very young age.
What do you mean? They made the album. How did they “take it out?”
Wow, and I clicked on this video 😂
You gotta be from the region to understand red dirt
You forgot South eastern son
I think I am in love with you.. lol
