    He has that extraordinary virtue of bringing more out of the music than is on the page, a gift, a compulsion, to reach into the source of the composer's inspiration, and let fly- like no other.

    When I hear Cherkassky I always remember Hofmann . These 2 always full of surprises ! Hofmann's anger or dissatisfaction but Cherkassky's always humorous , sly takes. He can change his colors from hot to cold in a second . A pianist from that era playing Berg and Stockhausen and Messiaen I have him in Bernstein's Touches . The gawd's owed us nothing after he left . His Chopin etudes will take me a while like Rosenthal and Friedmann in some of these . No. 3 sounds too Nocturne or chanson at first. I hope I keep coming back to these I will discover his way in these perhaps .

    it is amazing how for the tremendously difficult 1st etude he could still have the composure and poise to de orate/refine the arpeggios and draw out beautiful colors from the keyboard

      Hear Rosenthal in same ! DePachmann I have never thought much of but hear him too. Frederic Cho is the most interesting and honest of pianists .His etudes astound me more than the too famous but not overrated Pollini or Backhaus.Hough in Godowsky has more charm than anyone !

    Really, after hearing Cherkassky, it is hard for me to listen to other interpreters of Chopin, except Cortot and maybe Bolet. I only hope that more recordings of him were released. Thank you for posting this gem.

    Shura Cherkassky (Russian: Шура Черкасский; 7 October 1909 - 27 December 1995) was a Russian- American[1] classical pianist known for his performances of the romantic repertoire. His playing was characterized by a virtuoso technique and singing piano tone.[2] For much of his later life, Cherkassky resided in Britain.
    Beautiful Performance!!! Thank you for sharing this video.

    i have memorized all but 4,6,10,11.yet i love 6 and 11am afraid of the impossible tempi ive heard for #4.dont believe the modulations of #6 chopin was so far out there even as early as1831! no. 3 played by shura ch. is one of the finest i have heard.no.10 is pure song. i really have so much work to do. no.5 has s.c. charm all over it.no one sounds as he does .

    So glad James Methuen-Campbell in his book on the history of Chopin playing treated Cherkassky with none of the bemused condescension you hear even from his admirers. Indeed, Methuen-Campbell wrote that Cherkassky had Josef Hofmann's virtues without his flaws. The Op. 10 and 25 etudes can be found with the Preludes and much else (some of it live) in the Philips Great Pianists edition, the best introduction to this artist. There are many possible approaches to Chopin. Mikuli called his teacher's playing classical and sometimes severe. Chopin himself envied Liszt's strength and sweep. But uniquely, Chopin was magical - and so was Cherkassky.

    Always one of my favorites .No.5 really makes sense in how he finds melody in right hand and beautiful almost sentimental ending but unforgettable ! No.7 charm where Id least expect in this music . No.8 is him to a tee and the last arpeggio broken chords done well Cortot blows the m out of a different world . Ive never heard no. 9 made into a smal chanson. Very interesting here . Unforgettable his voicing and the textures too very different from many other pianists .He also makes the who melody flow from beginning till end complete line never lets the texture or angst change the line here . Its one way of doing it . No.10 is champagne and with some lightly accented basses thrown right in right before the Emaj section .which he gives a different texture than spiky opening . also phrasing of before last melody makes a lot of sense for Chopin !No.10 is totally convincing . No.11he stops using pedal right before ending(idont know why its different texture but why? I prefer Slobodyanick. Cherkassky hd small hands like Hofmann . No.11 left hand top notes sound too much to me Im not sure what hes trying the last 20 seconds are something however charm comes back!I dont like the way he plays no .1 Too little character in l.h. Almost forgettable certainly compared to Pollini,Argerich,Lortie,Frederic Chiu(the best in all of the recs I have . Like Cortot forgettable . Though the last bars are individual !

    Techniquement ce maître est un peu desservi par la prise de son de l'époque mais c'est un grand, très grand artiste (pas obnubilé par le mécanisme Dieu merci) qui fait toujours chaud au cœur à entendre. Merci pour cette mise en ligne !

    I love the way he actually struggles with some of the notes and even fumbles. It is all so human and part of his whole sound. Everything is so genuine and style style style. today all these creeps who win competitions I am not sure if they even hear the music. Always with Cherkassky it is a whole piece of music and so much tone with texture. Texture is something no-one knows about any more today.

    as a technitian he is not exactly flawless. You can hear him struggling a bit with a few wrong notes. but the spirit of Chopin is there for sure! By comparison, the playing of Pollini of these Etudes is perfect but sounds like a sawing machine

    • @piano345
      @piano345 6 років тому +1

      I have to agree with you here. Cherkassky offers poetry, imagination and spontaneity whereas Pollini sounds polished technically but doesn't offer anything of himself.

    • @HighlyShifty
      @HighlyShifty 5 років тому

      @@piano345 I think the beauty of Pollini's playing comes from his expression of the entire design , totally unified

    • @jonathanlim7091
      @jonathanlim7091 5 років тому +2

      I actually agree with you. After listening for a while, pollini's playing becomes predictable and boring... its like "what's new?", or "do you have anything else to showcase other than the fact that you never hit a wrong note?". For Cherkassky on the other hand, you hear those liquid tones, the variety of colors and the moments of surprises... and so what if the wrong notes appear once in a while? The audience will forgive and forget

    The most outstanding rendition of the Ab-Major Opus 10, #11 I've ever heard -- including that of Sviatoslav Richter and Valentina Lisitiska. It shimmers and sparkles with true radiance -- like delicate, spun glass ornaments tossed by a gentle breeze in summer sunshine. Marvelously elegant performance of these etudes.
