  • The rest of the Mine goes by without major incident (except for the size of that boulder making absolutely no sense), and the boss doesn't even last long enough to try out a Fire spell on it to check if it resists that.
Then, after a stop by Fireburg, a newly-opened shrine where the old man is particularly useless, and (sigh) another battlefield, it's on to the Volcano, where the music rocks harder than anywhere else so far! They really nailed the electric guitar, and I always appreciate tracks that sound like they'd keep the drummer fully engaged.
The level design feels much improved from the Mine, with caves, cliffs, a nice background, and an overall fairly plausible mountainous structure that continues upward for several submaps.
As they mentioned in town, there's also a haze partway up that obscures monsters, similar to the invisibility effect in the Ice Pyramid, until you find the Mask to counter it. The haze doesn't reach the lower tiers or extend to the higher ones, suggesting a ring around the side of the mountain like you often see in video games, except there's no such thing visible on the map.
And, like the Mirror before, I kind of stumble across the Mask just about as early as possible. It is vague memories, intuiting something from the layout, or just sheer dumb luck?

I love the sheer redundant redundancy of "Hypno-Sleep". :)
Attach was Cling in Japanese, for what it's worth.
