  • On July 30, 2001 the Ohio Central Railroad and Jerry Jacobson rolled out former Grand Trunk Western class U-3-b (4-8-4) Northern-type steam locomotive #6325 following her restoration. Following a day of testing and adjustments to her appliances, the next day, July 31, with Mr. Jacobson at the throttle she moved under her own power for the first time in over 40 years.
    The video was recorded at the Ohio Central's Morgan Run Shops near West Lafayette, OH. Although idle, the 6325 now resides, protected from the elements in the Age of Steam Roundhouse near Sugarcreek, OH.

    And his roundhouse will forever show the world what a pride one man had for steam. The rail preservation community was blessed that Mr. Jacobson decided to share his passion, I wish I could have had the honor of shaking his hand.

    When was a young boy, back in the 50s, their was a steam locomotive that ran through the little town I lived in, Clifford MI, I would go to the tracks just about every day to watch it come chugging bye, and then one day it never showed up, it was in 1959, and they put a diesel on it, I was hart broken, and my trips to the tracks fell off, until I rarely went at all, when that old steamer was taken off, and probably cut up for scrap, I felt like something inside me died , it was never the same again.

      My grandfather and his friends would always watch the steams trains of the Louisiana Northwest railroad. I love it when he tells the story of his first time hearing "that ungodly"(his words) horn when the first diesel came along.

      I understand...I used to live near Verona yards and would go down there after school and watch the steam locomotives pass by. GTW6325 was on display in a field next to old NYC passenger station for decades in downtown Battle Creek...I remember playing on that engine when I was a kid...Broke my heart when local RR club could not finance restoration and had to sell it. Years later I learned that it had been restored and was operational...Many heartfelt thanks to all those that took part in restoring this honorable old engine.

    I've never seen a engine being lit up for the first time after a while. The cab crew is so, excited and everyone is taking pictures to relive the moment later on. It's so, amazing to see that people care about steam and not diesels. Diesels honestly were a mistake from the beginning. That maybe my mind just saying that, hell I've never ran a railroad but seriously I just don't like diesels as much as I love Steam Engines.

    I wouldn't think 6325 would need restoration aside from the bearing replacement if it only ran periodically from 2001 to 2004 I would think that it would be in excellent condition with that little use or run time, I read several posts here where people seem to think she needs restoration?? and out of curiosity why hasn't she been run since 2004.

    • @ffjsb
      @ffjsb 2 роки тому

      A steam locomotive MUST be completely gone through, inspected, and serviced every 15 years per FRA regulations. It's around 1 million or so to do this, even if it was run one day in that 15 years. There's no way around it. The boiler has to have every square foot of it ultrasound measured in three spots to make sure it is thick enough to withstand the pressure. 6325 is still in good shape, but is out of it's inspection time.

What was all the investment of time, materials and labor for it not to make it run. What a horrible waste - a tragedy. Restored only to sit idle. How nice.

      I see the wrong info here Jerry paid to restore 6325 she was the star of the OC steam program for many years. When the OC hosted the NRHS convention 6325 developed a hot bearing and it's sideline the engine in 2006 when Jerry Jacobson sold the Ohio Central. 6325 and the rest of the collection was stored in Jerry Jacobson new operation called the age of steam Roundhouse what locomotive was not sidelined by choice at the time we had no need to roster and engine that large nor a place to drop the axle and do the bearing work.

    What a magnificent engine he must have been so proud of it. What happens now? Return to the rust bin in some "Museum" - Synonym for scrap yard?? So why is it being towed around by a diesel. Why the intermittent opening of the cylinder cocks. There must be water in those chests/.

    • @Schultz-ko3ve
      @Schultz-ko3ve  5 років тому +2

      6325 is currently a part of the Agree Of Steam Roundhouse collection. She has a nice home indoors where she's cared for. As for the diesel, it was used to pull it around the sharp curves in and out of the yard track. After sitting for sometime the cylinder cocks had to be opened to ensure the cylinders were free of water before moving.
