James Brown is considered a major figure of 20th century music and dance. He is the progenitor of funk. (That means it originates with him.) Just name a funkier person. I’ll wait…
By 1972, James Brown was already the Godfather of Soul. But the album that introduced the James Brown funk sound was 1964’s Out of Sight. A lot of people say the James Brown funk sound began with 1967’s Cold Sweat or 1965’s Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag, but according to James Brown himself, the funk sound started with Out of Sight.
My music - and most music - changed with "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag", but it really started on "Out of Sight" ... You can hear the band and me start to move in a whole other direction rhythmically. The horns, the guitars, the vocals, everything was starting to be used to establish all kinds of rhythms at once... I was trying to get every aspect of the production to contribute to the rhythmic patterns.[1]
We’ll talk more specifically about those rhythmic patterns later, but the key point is that Outta Sight introduced new rhythms to America’s musical lexicon.
