    The true meaning of gathering all those great ingredients on one table is so special as much as the taste of foods are. By coming to the king's table every day, each ingredients actually reflects each regions that they came from. For example, if some fine bean dish made with Gang-won region's bean shows on his table at the right season, the king can feel relief about that region's bean crop of the year. When Jeju island cannot send their best seaweed to the king so it doesn't appears on his table, he feel sorry for the region and lighten the tax for local residents there. The royal cuisine was not just for the taste, but also for the better judgement of the ruler.

    Some misunderstanding in this video. Royal Chefs like famous Janggeum had moved to yojung from early 20C because of japan's ethnic annihilation policy. Anything related to Korean royal family had came to no existence. So many real royal chefs hided in yojung and now still works in yojung mainly in jongro and seongbuk area. I had chance to go to yojung in 2005 when my company celebrated new emplyees and we had royal cuisine. The room and the plates and the foods in your video are more like jocheon's noblemen's, called yangban. If you really go to royal cuisine place, it will be very different from the ones you went. It's certainly a lot more expensive than 50 USD per person. Hope this helps solve the misunderstanding the video causes.

    There was a Chinese queen who loved eating so much that she had double the normal amount of food buried with her in her tomb when she died and she weighed so much when they evaluated her remains (compared to chinese stature of the era) that it is speculated that she died of gastrointestinal issues because she ate so much!

    As someone from Midwestern U.S. I'm not very versed in cooking gourmet foods. Culturally, I was taught to cook hot dishes that are easy on the palette, warms the heart, and eases the soul. I make a killer chicken noodle soup and I feel happy when I make it for my husband or our friends when they're sick and they get that dreamy look in their eyes after their first spoonful. It's not an ancient recipe, or made of the finest ingredients in the land, but it hits you right in the nostalgia.
    I've got a lot of respect for people who learn to make these amazing dishes and it makes me feel like my cooking skills are on the homely side -- in a good and bad way. ^u^

    Yesss! So excited you guys finally went! : D Also according to every Korean historical drama I've seen, ever, the king is NOT supposed to eat all the food- he should eat enough to show he enjoys it/until full and send the rest away. Then the kitchen staff get to enjoy the leftovers of what they made.
    Any Korean history majors that can confirm this for us? : O

    I would say that this meal is a stripped down version of the Korean Royal cousine, so that average people can have Royal cousine. When I was in S.Korea, I used to have similar meals like this twice a month or so. The meal you guys had is surely good quality, but that is not a once in a lifetime experience. In Seoul, I had a $500 meal per person which included Sin-seollo (Korean casserole), San-Sam-mal-ee (wild ginseng with 1++ beef), Da-Geum-Ba-Ri (sawedged perch), and so on. And that was the cheapest meal on the menu. (T.T)
    Anyway, your vids always make me go back to Korea and have Korean cousine. Good work guys, thusmbs up~!!!!

    • @got2many
      @got2many 9 років тому

      VanTOPChoi I have a question. since you've experienced this type of cuisine. do you have to dress up for it? a lot of people in these comments seem to be criticizing them for wearing tank tops.

    • @VanTOPChoi
      @VanTOPChoi 9 років тому

      got2many No, you do not need to. Simon's and Martina's outfits are totally OK for the restaurants they visited. I do not understand why some people are criticizing them for thier outfits. I am 100% sure since I am Korean, and my hometown has alot of similar restaurants like the one in the video, which serve meals from $30 to $200 per person. Casual outfits are totally OK in most Korean restaurants except very few high-end ones. Even in those luxurious restaurants, you can wear casual outfits when you dine out with your friends or family since you are most likely to be served in a private room. Employees cannot kick you out because of the outfits. In the case when you meet an important person or attend a formal meeting at a restaurant, then you need to dress up though (which is a common sense in any country or culture. ^^) Just know that there are very few high-end restaurants including luxurious hotel ones do require a specific dress code.

    When you talked about the "royal korean rice krispie square" cooked using sand, it reminded me that in China (atleast in the Sichuan province, I'm not sure about the others), there are street peddlers that have a huge stone pot with black sand in it, in which they will roast chestnuts. Which is delicious. ^.^ Sand does wonders.

    actually this meal is somewhat special one for king either. everyday meal was more simple than this and the side dishes let king knows what happend each part of Korea. if some ingredients seemed not good, king could guess the local area might have issues so king could examin and care the local problems.
