    Hey Denis, I love the analogy of learning a language. I’m learning French on Duolingo but I can’t have a conversation with people. That’s comparable to learning a scales and arpeggios but not using them to create melodies. I agree also that it’s important for beginners to be comfortable with rudimentary solos and not get frustrated with a limited vocabulary. It takes time and we need to learn to enjoy the journey.

      thanks! It was the same for me in the beginning with Japanese. I had all these words, and grammar points in my arsenal but I couldn't have a conversation in Japanese. It wasn't until I moved to Japan that I really learned to speak it. In retrospect, there were certain things I could have done to speak earlier without having to have moved there but at the same time, before moving to Japan, I never actually planned to move there haha

    Wow, you're a multi talented guy. You should move to Toronto, and open up a bricks and mortar music school, and music store. My city needs a person like you here, spark and ignite the Gypsy jazz swing scene. Montreal's great, my wifes from there, but Toronto needs you Dennis.

      @@DenisChangMusic you need a financial backer, a partner to take you, and this genre to the next level, here in Toronto. There's no stores here catering to gypsy jazz? I can't even find guitar techs that know how to work on my guitars, even do simple adjustments? And Tommy Davey, can't recommend anyone here? I know Mtl, is different, in that regard, but still, you would think my city, with ALL the stores, someone would know something. And I'm in NO WAY exaggerating Dennis, when I bought my first Gypsy jazz guitar, a John Jorgennson, it came without a setup from Long & Mcquade, no one knew how to set up, so I had to give it back, and I got luck and bought a used one from 12th fret, which was already set up. That guitars my travel guitar now. Maybe you know someone here? I've already expressed my interest to Tommy about opening a store here, I WANT to do this, I NEED the right people, NOT the finances.
      Thx Dennis.

    I found this explanation of the process invaluable, especially the analogy with learning language and the revelation that very few, if any, “masters” have short cuts. “You have to do the work yourself.” Thank you.

      I have had a lot of big name players come to my house for extended periods of time or I've hung out with them elsewhere for extended periods of time so I've got to witness a lot of this phenomenon first hand! While some people may be more talented than others, behind it all is a looooooot of work and patience

    Yeah, I've been working on learning Miles Davis's solos in "So What", probably the easiest jazz song harmonically, but the phrases are just amazing.

    26:37 i am nowhere near as good or coherent as you. But I still like to play on a poorly made acoustic guitar with 5 strings also missing the high E. I just keep it that way now and work with voicing what’s available.

    So what do you think of GJ players like Josho Stephan or a lot of Dutch player's like Jimmy Rosenberg who do seem to play a lot of links and same ones over and over?

    • @seanquinlan6887
      @seanquinlan6887 29 днів тому +3

      The majority of people playing Gj are not genuine improvisors in the true sense. They know all the cliches and can navigate through the repertoire.

    • @user-bdie6ikhd55w73hwg
      @user-bdie6ikhd55w73hwg 27 днів тому +2

      GJ without linked licks does not sound like GJ unless you are playing true Django style hot jazz like Django, which is quite rare. Modern players who actuall improv like Adrien end up sounding like bebop over la pompe.

    • @DenisChangMusic
      @DenisChangMusic  26 днів тому

      @@user-bdie6ikhd55w73hwg I think they do improvise but it is true that a lot of them are using "longer musical cells" than others who "seem to improvise more". I made a video about this last year I think.

    • @DenisChangMusic
      @DenisChangMusic  26 днів тому

      nah, don't think that way. My philosophy is just to enjoy what you do and know what it is you want out of music.

    I think that it makes sense to learn vocabulary from the community at large. however, I feel that jazz solos are often too fast for me to hear what's going on. can you speak at all to what a musician might do if jazz solos sound too fast to perceive clearly? I know that we have the luxury of tools that can slow music down, and many publicly available transcriptions and video performances, but I'm wondering what else can be done. maybe it just means that I haven't spent enough time being a beginner, learning the basics.

    • @DenisChangMusic
      @DenisChangMusic  26 днів тому

      In the beginning, I learned simple phrases, and/or I had people show/teach them to me. I studied the stuff that I could easily digest. Overtime, my ears got better and better and I was able to digest more complicated stuff. When I mean that I don't need my guitar to understand what is going on, it doesn't mean that I can figure out each and every single note accurately, it means that I understand the general concept being used.

    As the Jazz language beginner,which course of your sound slice would be suggest?The bebop vocabulary series or the Gypsy series.

    • @DenisChangMusic
      @DenisChangMusic  26 днів тому

      Bebop and Gypsy Jazz have different vocabularies. I think the best is to find players whose playing you like and start to find out what they are doign with a teacher. If you find that you love Gypsy Jazz, then of course, you can check out Gypsy Jazz, if you think you like bebop, then of course, my bebop course will teach the basics of how bebop phrases are created. But there's more to jazz than just Gypsy Jazz and bebop! Find out what you like!
