Does ECC RAM also come in buffered and unbuffered?
Yes they do. Unbuffered is faster, but buffered is more reilable.

interesting. so would a desktop type of ram be like DDR4 or DDR3 compared to the ECC and parity of servers / large networks? Or is it something else?
DDR comes in ECC and none-ECC. So DDR4 and DDR3 would have ECC and none-ECC versions. Most of the time you only see ECC used in servers. So essentially you need to make sure the memory that you purchase works in the motherboard you are using.
