  • Alice in Chains' 1992 masterpiece, Dirt, is a pinnacle of grunge's gnarled, trudging instrumentation and its tortured motifs of mental and physical anguish. It's also a document of a band in the throes of chaos - dealing with serious drug addiction, broken bones, internal firings, the trappings of fame and being surrounded by the everyday violence of early-Nineties Los Angeles. These are 10 stories that you (likely) didn't know about the timeless brilliance that is Dirt, and the crazy shit that proceeded and followed its release.
    Watch above and let us know your favorite track from the album in the comments below!

      I don’t even think it’s debatable, dirt and jar of flies are the best 2 projects from the scene imo and their unplugged is the best ever. Facelift is a classic too and tripod rules and is mad underrated. They just weren’t as mainstream as the other 3 members of the big 4

    You missed one fact: they were given a place to sleep from Slayer during the LA Riots. Slayer was also recording Divine Intervention and stuck with the same problem, so they helped each other out. After that, Slayer recorded LA92. A cover of Exploited’s UK82, with altered lyrics obviously.

      I don't get how anyone can say AIC is underrated. They're by far my favorite band of that era, and while Nirvana may get more mainstream/media attention and sell more shirts to 13-year olds, music fans and critics tend to favor AIC. There are endless videos singing their praises on UA-cam alone, perhaps more than any other grunge-era band. Please, let's stop whining that a band is underrated just because they're not all over Top 40 radio.

    Mike wasn't fired because of escalated drug use, we're talking about Alice in Chains here. He was let go because he was stealing merchandise, tickets, backstage passes, and occasionally instruments then selling it all outside the venue prior to shows on the Dirt tour. While he was using some of the money to support his habit, that's not what got him fired. It was the fact that Jerry found out about it from a fan after a show and he was embarrassed about how it made the band look.
    Also, the only member on heroin was Layne. However, half the band were on the white stuff. Mike and Jerry were both big fans of Columbia back then, Mike just took it to the extreme then added benzos on top.

    • @1lastthing285
      @1lastthing285 Рік тому +1

      Mike Starr was absolutely on heroin. Laynes mom visited him on Celebrity Rehab for his heroin addiction where he mentioned he was shooting dope with Layne and was the last person he saw. Also, in Brazil, the last performance he ever had with AIC, he almost died from heroin.
      Jerry also admitted to doing heroin he just wasn’t as big on it as he was powder.

    • @kdub7195
      @kdub7195 Рік тому

      @@1lastthing285 you need to get your timeline straight. Mike Starr was NOT on H during this tour. I can prove it.

    • @aleksastamenkovic5526
      @aleksastamenkovic5526 Рік тому

      Nah dude Mike was on h without a doubt. I mean its pretty well documented that Jerry was a major coke head and an alcoholic, Sean was an alcoholic and Mike and Layne were heroin addicts. No doubt all of them also did a bunch of coke, Mike included and yes he did abuse benzos too.

    • @kdub7195
      @kdub7195 Рік тому

      @@aleksastamenkovic5526 People are confusing what I said. Mike Starr absolutely used H, but he did not use it while he was in AiC. People can argue this all they want, but he didn't. I know he didn't. Go read Mark Lanagens book if you want another person who knew him to tell you he was not on it back then. He may have chipped occasionally on that last tour, but he didn't start chasing till he was fired.. which is what led him way down the hole.

    I always thought the thing thar set AIC apart was the vocal harmonies. Their vocals were very distinctive, you didnt hear harmonizing like that from the other bands.

    I loved all grunge and welcomed it as it obliterated hair metal. AIC was the band that I related to the most. I lived those lyrics.

    Saw AIC at the Chicago Lolla. Layne was fucked. Jerry sang most the songs as Layne just stood there. It was sad. Dirt is a masterpiece and is still a top 5 album for me. Love the new AIC, tool

    I knew all that shit but i dont understand what their struggle was after their success from Facelift? They were the 1st band to go gold from that seattle scene. Struggle? Cuz they were doing drugs?? Also the band never announced a break up. Jerry actually denies this in an interview as well. Theres my 2 cents...peace
