Ed's insane argument. "As long as I think they are good blokes (they have an effective PR dept), they should be able to shower politicians in freebies (aka bribes)." Sorry Ed. You are dead wrong on this one.

To be honest this is Ed's take on pretty much everything. It's the same from who he thinks has the right to protest, to what MPs are allowed to say to each other, to what football teams should chant. Ultimately he's very wedded to his biases position and approaches issues from the perspective of whos team he's on.

I think Oli misses the point here at the 40 minute mark, that the lady wasn't just saying to blow the mosque up (which you might construe as a deeply hateful and racist but purely symbolic expression of anger), she was denigrating the efforts of the community in coming together to repair the damage done, and explicitly said to blow the mosque up "with the adults inside" - she wasn't just being racist, she explicitly was calling for murder. I think that should be treated with far, far more gravity, especially - as Oli said - given the context it was said in.
People were afraid to leave their homes. It totally changed the mindsets of many, many people in this country, about whether or not they're safe in their own homes anymore. These words have consequences. I'm glad these people who thought they were safe causing other people danger faced consequences of their own.

I mean, do we want competent and experienced people to run the country? Then we need to compensate them "fairly". I'm not saying to pay millions like Chief Execs in private industry get because public service and duty should count for something. However, pay peanuts, get monkeys. I would consider top 5% of pay peanuts in this context when you are literally looking for people to hold the highest offices in the country.

They’re not paid that well for London but their expenses cover a lot of living costs I guess.
I’d pay them a lot more (easily double) but have severe financial restrictions on the rest of the lives.
No landlords, at most you can own 1 house including immediate family.
No second jobs, get the BMA and legal profession to help former MPs back into those professions.
Massive restrictions on what jobs they can do after being an MP.

We'd all like to avoid giving Farage and his Ilk a penny, but elected offices should be paid sufficient that they can do their job full time without additional income. I don’t particularly have a problem with paying MPs more if the aim is to get better candidates - I understand that an individual would be less likely to become an MP if they could get more money elsewhere - but you have to stop them having second jobs, being able to claim seemingly unlimited expenses and accepting money/freebies (unless a doctor etc for the reasons discussed).

I’m no legal expert, so correct me if I’m wrong, but “verbally expressing racism” would legally depend on whether it’s harassment (or incitement).
For example, Marker Hester saying Diane Abbott “wants to make [him] hate all black people” is horrendous and racist, but technically legal (I think?); however, when he continued and said she “should be shot”… that’s clear incitement of violence.

I think one MP per 103,000 people is if anything a paltry ratio. I think if you make the HoL a Party list system then draw ministers directly from that and split MPs between constituency work and sitting in the house full-time maybe that ratio is a good one but when they have potential Ministerial posts 2nd jobs legislative and constituency casework. Then I'd potentially argue there aren't enough MPs.

I think when it comes to sentences for inciting hate/violence, the reason that these sentences make sense (not necessarily saying they're justifiable) is that social ostracisation and taking their jobs off them doesn't work for an awful lot of people people convinced to make such vile statements...because they're surrounded by people who agree with them, and they don't work in professional organisations that give a shit whether they've posted inflammatory statements online. So what are we left with, if we want in the short term, to stop them doing that?
The long term solution to me is not criminalisation, but to give these people something else to think about - something to hope for. A lot of these people have nothing to lose, and so it's easy both to cajole them into being violent (either physically or talking about it) and to convince them that if we just get rid of all the X, Y, Z people it'll be better cause they've been left behind.
Rather than Labour climbing on a high horse about this, their response should be to start making everyone - including these disenfranchised white working/benefits class folks lives better. It might not sound appealing as a response, because we are angry, and scared, and the actions of these people disgust us. But we have to choose, do we want to be right, and feel like those who are wrong have been punished...or do we want to stop something like this happening again?

The poliyannish faith in the good motives of the FA is interesting. For examples of how evil sports governance can get, see that BBC guy who's banned from FIFA, the whole collapse of Blatterism in the 10s, and all the mad stuff that has gone down at the IOC down the years. If John Oliver has done bits about it, it's hardly obscure.
As an outisde observer, the tobacco lobbying was also unlikely t have been "free cigarettes". Consider anywhere advertising from the lobbyist might appear, and then consider that that sponsorship will come with free tickets, which are a target entertainment opportunity. So Philip Morris/Malboro would have been able to take people to see Ferrari race cars, the betting companies will have free sports event tickets, and so on. Sir Keir's love for football and willingness to accept hospitality gives anyone with their name on a shirt the chance to attempt influence. Allegedly.

Also making an independent body to access which companies are "ok" to take "gifts" from is just a waste of taxpayer money and time. Just ban all forms of lobbying. Also i think that if MPs want a second job, then thats fine. But the second job cant conflict with MPs duties, nor can the influence the public in an "outside" perspective like TV/News

Because of the 'national theatre', 'non-profit' & 'publically supporting the country's football industry' points, football tickets do feel fairer than the personal value gain of £1000s of clothes on his literal back.
Taking it to extremes, should the PM pay for a factory tour when visiting places? Because I would get personal value out of that tour and I would have to pay as a memeber of the public.

People complaining about Nigel being away but not any other MP feeds into the narrative that Nigel is anti establishment which he likes and helps grow his support. And his monthly earnings being greater than the prime ministers is more embarrassing for Kier Stammer than Nigel Farage.

45:14 I think it's a mistake to talk about people expressing bigoted (and often violently bigoted) views as if they've simply been led astray by new or legacy media or the political class: firstly, I think it risks turning people with sincere - but totally abhorrent - views into victims of manipulation ("where did they get them from"), and secondly I think it's not supported by the fact that the whole of the UK is saddled with a RW media landscape that normalises hatred and freely employs dehumanising and violent rhetoric, but plenty of places didn't see riots or 'protests'. I think it makes more sense not to focus on the purveyors of hate (whose influence is truly nation-wide) but on the minority of people that ultimately adopted the hatred.
Tl;dr, why did only parts of England and Northern Ireland see rioting when the whole of the UK shares a vile media that proliferates bigotry?

If you have a job that pays £1M and a job that pays £71k - it’s obvious which one is the ‘second job’!
This is how it should be referred to.

Rees-smug gets nearly £325,000 from the Great British Nazi channel, didn't really need that pittance he got as an MP. Which is lucky.

With regards to "should racism be illegal", the thing that has to be remembered that racism in itself is a violent act.
It seems from the belief that one race is superior to another and has a history worth of dead at the hands of that belief.
It's important to treat racism as a violent act because its aim is to dehumanise a group of people.
