She has six kittens and one is sick, or blind, or unable to move. She has two choices, eat the baby right now and nourish her so she can have more energy to take care of the healthy ones, or try taking care of it, and risk putting them in danger if they need to move or, if it's sick, risking to spread the disease to the healthy ones. Which one you think it's the best choice? The nature can be cruel sometimes but this is how it works and always worked.
I understand it's sad, but in a manner the cat may have done the right thing. A really unhealthy offspring isn't gonna have a happy life, and probably dies before adulthood either way. Sometimes better to shorten the suffering
